Hi all,
If anyone has grey hair, please shout! I could do with the moral support right now! I have BSL hair, which was once very dark brown but now is about 60 % grey (more on top, less underneath). Ive been going grey since I was 12 years old! I want to go white, or very grey, as quickly as possible because it's beautiful and striking. It seems to be going the same way as my mother's hair did (which is now thick, white and long.... and turns heads). At the moment mine is prob 15 years away from white so it looks dull and drab. Grey doesnt reflect the light, and looks 'tiring' I think. Dyeing is *not* an option, my scalp psoriasis has had enough of that.
Up until a few months ago, my natural hair was dreadlocked. I unpicked them because grey dreads made me look like a dirty tramp, instead a silvery dread head. I managed to unpick them all and surprisingy my hair is in fairy good shape -although its a lot more sparse than it was, due to a lot of breakage at the roots. Here's hoping this site is going to be my hair's best friend! :)

Welcome, Silver lox!!! There are many gray/silver/white heads of hair here. Come on in and get to know us. I've been growing my natural colors since July of 2006 after dyeing for 10 years. You'll get a ton of support here. :flowers:

Hi and welcome. I can't wait to see your silvery locks. My signature picture doesn't capture it very well, but I'm definitely well into the color change. I'll tuck in an extra picture that captures it better.

Count me among the pigment unencumbered. My photo is on my profile page.

I'm white in spots - nearly 100% at the temples, about 40% elsewhere - but I'm in firm denial. I henna. :)
Welcome!

Like you, the grays start to appear at an early age (13 for me). I'm still not too far along in the color change, but what I don't like about my silvers is that they tend to be shorter and more unruly, so they stick out everywhere giving me that frizzy look all over my crown.
Welcome and enjoy your stay!

me too! I started going gray at 15 and I hate the unruliness of my new and still short silvers!

There's actually a social group for Silver Hair. If you can, check it out. There's quite a few of us.
I let my silver grow in completely about five years ago after coloring for 16 years or so.

Hi! :)
I'm not much older than you and I think I have about 70% grey, also mostly on the top while underneath is still very dark. Like you I found my greys very drab so I dyed them with henna and indigo for a while - but now I'm growing them out again (you can see plenty of wayward sticky up new greys in my signature!) I've found that using more conditioner/the right conditioner makes a huge difference to how shiny they are. May be worth experimenting with different routines/products to see if you can get the greys to reflect the light a bit more? I'm sure some of the others will have good advice - I'm a relative newbie to these boards. Anyway - welcome to LHC! :D

I hate to admit this, and I wouldn't recommend doing it. But there have been times where I have gotten so frustrated with a particularly unruly silver strand and I have yanked it out. Once one of my sisters saw me doing that and she spouted the old wives tale of how three more gray hairs will grow in its place. :lala: I didn't want to hear that. :p

Wow, thanks for all the feedback, I never expected so much! :) I feel stronger already!
My photo's will be a while, my cd drive is gone and I need a new one before I can put pics on here. Your pics are inspiring, just what I needed to see. Seems like a friendly place here, glad to have joined!
I found a product that makes your grey hair sparkle and doesnt have any chemicals in it! Its for dreadlocks, actually. They are natural and residue free, leaving your hair really clean.
Well, I have found two options:
1: Knotty Boy shampoo (available from the Knotty Boy website). But this one *will not* lather. So if you like lather, go for this next one.
2: Dreadhead HQ shampoo (from their website). Its fantastic!! and it does lather so a little goes a very long way. (but it has SLS in it, hence the lather). These shampoos are expensive but well worth it. This one especially lasts so long!
:happydance: Enjoy!

Here's my going white hair. Finally there is more of the white than the brown, I've been waiting for the switch! Snow white hair runs in my family, my mom had the most beautiful long white hair ever.

Wow, lynala your hair is so beautiful!
If I were like my dad, I would be just about all silver, however, I take after my mom and her mom. My mom has a patch of silver on the side and little bits here and there. Her hair is down to her hips. :) I should get her on here!!!

Hi Silver Lox
Here is some moral support. I have about 55% brown, 45% silvers coming in as single strands but also what Xandergrammy calls "racing stripes." My theory is that there are three gray/silver hair colors: light gray, medium gray and dark gray. Silver is merely shiney gray. I think that if you start investigating the LHC resources, you'll find ways to make your grays sparkle.
Some of us at LHC embrace our grays, some dye with all sorts of interesting things that you would never dream of.

I dreadlocked my hair last year, (start of my mid life crisis lol) and unpicked it all recently. I am thankful that the damage is not too bad, my hair was thick enough to get away with lots of loss due to breakage. Although I will always have a place in my heart for dreads, it wasn't for me.
Now I'm left with much thinner hair, isnt it brilliant that hair grows back? :) I feel that I have learned a valuable lesson, because I had nice hair and wrecked it by dreadlocking it. Silly me. Anyway, I'll be around from now on to learn and chat to all you great people on here. And I will post pics soon.
Merry meet, merry part, and merry meet again!

Lynnala, I can't make out what is says in your pics. Which is before, the blonde? And (forgive me for being dim) what is Cassia? thanks :)

Sorry, I am not lynnala, but to answer your question (in case you haven't found out elsewhere), "cassia" is cassia obovata, a herb used for hair treatment/conditioning... there's a long thread about it here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=406). Hope that helps a little. :flower:

Welcome Silver Lox! You'll find this place is addictive. Everything you need to know about your hair is on this website, although it takes awhile to figure out. So get comfortable, you may be spending a lot of time here.
Here is a photo of my hair one year ago before I joined LHC.

Oh I have gray hair. It started with few strands in high school and got out of control recently. I henna regularly to cover them. Not anytime soon but I would love to grow my grey hair and let it go freely, i love the look it gives to the person.

Welcome!
I'm in firm acceptance: I earned those grays, I'm keeping them. [ they are on top and the top 6-8 inches or so ] Also, I am lazy and henna sounds like a hassle AND if I did cover up, I think I might want to hendigo, and that's MORE of a hassle. I just want long hair, I don't mind which color.
Even cheese-colored! :cheese:

Hello there!
I used to have grey hair. When I changed my diet, my hair grew out to the color it was in my teens, and I lost all the grey, totally.
Maybe there is a deficiency in the diet that causes the hair to grow out grey. All I know is from what I have experianced for myself. Remarkable.

SisterChristion, that is indeed amazing. What changes did you make to your diet?

Hi, everyone! :) Welcome, Silver lox! I guess I don't have as much gray as other people here my age, but I started noticing a few scattered gray hairs at age 24, soon after my wedding. {DH jokes that he caused every one of them!} Since the colors in my hair range from light yellow blond to very light brown, the grays often look like highlights. I'm glad some of you mentioned that there are ways to make gray hair more silvery; I'll keep that in mind. From what I remember reading, I think the lack of certain B-complex vitamins causes hair to lose pigment and then become gray. I also remember reading that pigment can be restored in new hair growth, but I'm not sure which B vitamins or what quantities are needed to make that happen. SisterChristian, I would also be interested to know what your diet changes were. Happy growing to all! :)

I thought I'd show this flat-ironed picture because the silvery hairs look like I had highlights done. Nature did it for me: beautiful, perfect, healthy highlights ... like moon-glow.
