Hey all,
I've been taking Biotin for about two weeks now. I have noticed that now none of my hair is breaking off. I have been taking MSM/Glucosamine, Silica, B complex, Evening Primose Oil, Calcium Orotate(best form of calcium 95-99% bioavailable), blackstrap molasses and iodine, as well as nettle tea ocassionally.
So it could be any of those supplements...But something tells me it is the Biotin. Has anyone noticed all of there hair, not just the new roots, being stronger?
Also, I noticed now that my scalp is releaasing a "serum" now, rather than just oil. If I don't wash my hair for a few days, it becomes quite heavy and a bit thicker.
Of course it looks greasy, but this serum seems to thicken my hair up and give it nice gloss(not just greasy shine) as well. I think it is the Biotin doing this. Has anyone had this experience?
Thanks!

I've been on biotin for 12 months. No increase in oils on my scalp that I noticed. Nails are really great now, before they use to peel and flake and now they are long, strong and lovely. My hair I think is less porous, maybe thicker. I need to cut out all of my damage which should be about 12 months.
edit:
Did wonders for my skin.

Biotin never did a thing for my hair but my nails grew a lot faster.

Biotin helped me thicken back up some after having a huge shed and finding out I was deficient in that area. It took several months before I started noticing a change. My nails loved it too. As long as I took it, I felt much better overall, I could think clearly, had more energy and my hair and nails were going back to what they were when I was younger and in my early to mid teens. I did have to stop for another reason a few months ago and that caused some minor issues until I started a new vitamin that had a fair bit of biotin in it.

Recently started taking hair skin and nails again. I didn't really notice a difference in the hair growth, but my nails got fairly long. Again as for hair, may have helped a lil bit, as in healthier look/appearance.

It has to be a placebo affect. There's nothing that gives nutrients to your hair once it leaves the follicle. Unless that is growth that you got while taking biotin, then the biotin is not affecting it.

I've never tried biotin, but I've heard mixed reviews on it.

Thanks to all who have replied.
Rufflebutt: No, you need to reread my post. My scalp is creating this serum like substance that normally it never produced. It's not just oil, it's like this thick, oily stuff. When I use a boar bristle brush, it carries the "serum" through the rest of the hair shafts. I wondered if it's Biotin that's creating the serum and if anyone else has noticed such an effect.

In 2 weeks? No, I very much doubt it has anything at all to do with the biotin.

I take biotin in my normal supplements.
Your daily need.
Which is ONLY 300 MCG. I read this on the bottle. It has 300 mcg of biotin, and then states that is 100% of your daily value. I am going off the bottle here. I do not believe they would have any reason to lie about this.
I can not stand to hear people overdosing themselves on biotin and trying to "up their tolerance".
I will also say when I went out of state for 3 days, and did not take my vitamins for 4, Alllllll of my natural long fingernails I finally grew for the first time in my life ripped right off instantly, my hair did not feel good anymore, nor my skin. :(
Edit: also, my overall well being, mood, and health feel a difference. Not a good one. I mainly take a B complex and calcium for my mood. It really helps me.
I do believe my body benefits from all the vitamins, but I do know biotin helps me a little bit more if its not an over dose. :)
I am sure though, all the supplements I take are to blame for the good health of my hair skin and nails.

Biotin didn't do a thing for my hair. I guess it works for some people.

You are taking a lot of things at once. It could be any of them(or a mix of them) unless you started taking them slowly and not all at the same time. I have never heard of biotin doing this and it never happened to me, but of course everyone can react differently to supplements.
I usually try and start taking supplements slowly. I give it a couple months before I add something else, just in case I do have some strange reaction to it.

I did not use the biotin until later so it probably did not affect my initial results. I use many supplements to strengthen and grow my hair and nails. I definitely have to say that MSM was the direct contributor for my nails at least initially. My hair is definitely stronger after close to a year on supplements.

Biotin has no effect on my hair at all, but my nails are much stronger when I take it.

I have been taking biotin for about 2yrs now.. it has done absolutely nothing for my hair but it has made my nails stronger/grow faster... so for that reason alone, I continue taking it.

You also asked if the biotin could be making all of your hair stronger, and the answer is no, because biotin doesn't affect the hair that's already out of the follicle. It might have an effect on sebum, but since you're taking many things there's really no way to isolate what exactly is having the effect.

Perhaps the supplements/vitamins you are taking are having an effect on your sebum (natural hair oil) and thus you're noticing it when you brush.
There's nothing wrong with natural sebum, but it sounds like you're experiencing too much of it.
Be careful when taking supplements, etc. Biotin has been known to cause breakouts in some people.

Wow, thanks for posting everyone.;)
To be honest, the sebum that is being produced is not too much in my opinion. For the first time ever, my hair doesn't break off if I tug on it gently.
I wouldn't say my hair is any oilier than before, but the quality of the sebum is different. It's thick, it makes my hair look thicker.
The reason I wonder if it is biotin I read a post on the internet where a girl said that she had been taking biotin for only a short time and that her hair felt thicker all over. Even she conceded that it seemed impossible since all of her old hair was still there. However, she swore that the overall quality of her hair was thicker. Perhaps it was the sebum production. Sadly, I cannot find this post!
I just wondered if anyone experienced this while taking biotin alone. Granted, I am taking a lot of different supplements and it could be any of them! I am sure glad my hair isn't breakin' off anymore though. I had resolved to chop my hair off and start anew if it continued to break off like this!
