To celebrate the DVD release of "The Hunger Games" (My family owns a video rental store,) I decided to do the braid Katniss wore in the Arena. I was inspired by this video: Authentic Katniss Braid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpVnRZJCGhI)
I wanted to replicate it without using heat, though. So here is my little tutorial on how to do the Katniss braid sans heat styling tools.
In the video above, Mindy shows how to wrap the pin curls necessary to get the textured "dreadlock" curls. On freshly washed and slightly damp hair, I wrapped about 6 - 7 curls at the top of my head and secured them with 2 - 3 bobby pins.

Then I braided the rest in a simple English plait.

I slept in this overnight. In the morning I undid the braid and all the pin curls and got this result. Separate each curl into 2 - 3 pieces and ruffle up the scalp to hide any part lines.

Starting at the left ear, I did a simple Dutch braid keeping it close to the nape of the neck. Keep the braid loose as the texture is key to this look. Finish the braid on the right and secure with a band. Voila!!
