View Full Version : Getting married on Saturday, fretting over hair (pic heavy)

I am getting married this Saturday (woohoo!) and decided a while ago that I was going to do my own hair for the wedding. Seemed like a simple thing to do. But now I am starting to fret and don't want to bore my friends and family to tears about my hair, so I figured hey... everyone here likes to talk about hair, why not my wedding hairstyle? ;) I am not sure if what I want to do - well, what I like that's within my skill set to accomplish on my current head of hair - will go with my wedding dress. I am not a very fussy person, but my dress is, well, fluffy. In a good way.

I want to have my hair down but pulled away from my face. French braids slip out of my hair pretty easily given the layers and the slipperiness of my hair. And I need something that will look good with the length either straight or super wavy (my hair does whatever it wants regardless of my wishes, so I just roll with it). So instead I came up with this. I need to smooth the fly-aways and hide the elastics better, but as a test run it's not too shabby.

Congrats on your upcoming nuptials! I love your dress and I find your potential hairstyle cute!

I think for a wedding (unless it's super casual) you should do a bit more with your hair. At least curl it a little and put some shine spray and hairspray on. I am all about natural hair care but it's your wedding KWIM? If you find that you can't quite get what you are looking for I wouldn't hesitate to go to a hair stylist. Your wedding is the time that you want to look really well put together and you don't want to regret that you tried to do your own hair every time you look at the pictures.

I like it too! Practice frequently until the event. I like the idea of doing your own hair, you could enlist a friend if you need to. I think it's adorable and shows off your color and texture. It's fluffy like your pretty fluffy dress. Parfait! You could sock bun it the night before if you think you need more curl.

EvaSimone - I totally do, which is why the fretting, hehe. But the wedding isn't formal (afternoon wedding at the chapel on base), and I want to look like me if that makes any sense - thus the decision to do it myself. But then I see such amazing hairstyles on the wedding websites, and the "should I/shouldn't I" cycle start. Brain overload!

kitschy - Thank you very much!

Dorothy - Thank you, I definitely will practice my little fingers off. The sock bun is great suggestion, I will have to practice that as well and see how it goes. :)

This is off topic, but your body has the most beautiful hourglass shape! You'll make a lovely bride at your wedding. :)

I love your hair but what about one more trial run with a little more kick in it to see.

Oops didn't notice the date.

I love it! you might want to add slips or little flowers into the braids to make it more fancy:)

Congrats on your pending wedding!! Hair ornaments will suit your dress well! There are some feather fascinators that would look gorgeous pinned to your braids . . .

Rufflebutt - hehe, thanks! It's amazing what a corset can achieve.

Silverbrumby - Yes, definitely several more trial runs. I know there needs to be something more but need to think about it a little and test some additional flair out. I was just feeling anxious and needing to share my (self-created) drama with the world. ;)

chelshireling - Good idea! I was trying to figure out how to weave some ribbon into/around it but flowers are another excellent option.

tambalina - First I just have to fangirl your hairstyle in your userpic! It's amazing. I've seen some feather pieces when we've been out shopping, and my DBF proceeded to entertain me with bird-related humor for hours afterward. :) Just means I need to find a BIGGER feather fascinator!

Hi! Congrats on your upcoming wedding.

As a stylist, and someone who has done hair/make-up for events, I recommend something with more flair to go with the dress, because the dress has so much going on with the ruffles, you really should try to complement the style with your hair. Not that what you've done isn't lovely, but it does seem kind of plain given the dress.

How about something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oo5SzKVcLls&list=UUI1lX-Z8umY3so8WdYM78tA&index=4&feature=plcp
Or

Just a professional suggestion. If you're up to a full up style luxy hair has SO many that would work, and as you can see, they can be done on your own.

Important is to use a styling product to create hold, It is only one day, and even if you're wanting to go all natural, I can't recommend it enough, a wedding is a whole day with lots of action, you don't want fallout before the end of the day.

Are you wearing a veil, even for part of the day? This is important to take into consideration, and you can switch to a fascinator or jewelled accessory later in the day, if required, but this dress would be perfect for no extra adornment.
Good luck! you and your dress are stunning!

I like the braids and I completely understand wanting to look at feel like yourself at the wedding. That said, you could add a little extra curl, flower(s) tucked in the braid, or a single elegant hair accessory of some kind.

I had a half-up, somewhat curled with white flowers (the artificial kind with stems of bendable wire) scattered through my hair . Pictures are in one of my albums, if you are looking for ideas.

Calaelen - Thank you for the links! I agree that I need extra oomph. I don't own a curling iron or hot rollers, but I do have caruso curlers so I will give those a shot today! If that doesn't work, I always have setting lotion and soft curlers I can wear overnight for more intense curls. You're right, curls would go really well with the ruffles. :) I am not wearing a veil at this moment, but if I see a small bird cage one today I might give in a pick one up.

XcaliburGirl - I LOVE your wedding hair! The little flowers are gorgeous! I will try to find some when I am out today, I think those would be fantastic without feeling too much for me. Thanks!!

You have lovely hair (the accent braids are a very nice touch), and a the dress definitely compliments your shape. :) Congratulations on your wedding!

I understand the need to feel like everything was made extra special for your wedding day, but my advice is this; whatever style you ultimately choose, make sure that it's comfortable and that you can dance around in it without worrying about it too much.

On my wedding day I kept it simple, a single accent braid down the center of my back to keep my hair out of my face and a circlet to compliment my earrings and necklace.

No matter what you do with your hair I'm sure that your future-husband will be blown away when he sees you in that dress!

Thanks. I hope it works for you. :) The down side is that they are kind of a pain to get out at the end of the day.

A Birdcage veil would be so gorgeous with that dress! Please post a pic of your final look for us, we LOVE wedding pics here!

You could also try rag curls, which are comfortable to sleep in and would save you time in the morning, as you'd just have to take them down and maybe hairspray or smooth some frizz. Curls would look nice with the braided 'do but make it a bit fancier to go with the dress. ETA: I also love the first link Calaelen posted.

Congrats!

I agree with everything Calaelen said, your dress is amazing, and I would want my hair to be more dramatic. The birdcage veil would make a wonderful addition.
I can't wait to see pics !!!!!!!!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! :flower:
Lovely dress!
I don't think you should be concerned about using hairspray or even heat or this day. This is after all one style that will need to look good all through a long day!
A headpiece would look lovely, I think, and would add that little something else to the hair.
Here are a few that I like the look of:

Ooh, I love your dress, that's so pretty!

I do like the hair but I'm not crazy on the straight line parting that it gives you. I'd be a bit unhappy with that tbh. Can you not do a braid more like this:

I hope you find the right 'do for it and congratulations!

First off- I love your dress ♥

I really like the hairstyle you did with the headband braids. The curl your hair had in the picture is perfect, imo.

Perhaps you could get some really small white flower clips (very small, maybe 1-2cm across) to clip into the braids? I think it would look really pretty without being too dramatic and whatnot.

I hope you have a wonderful wedding! ♥

I love the style you chose! I have a different suggestion for decorating your hair. I happen to love sparklies and what better time than your wedding? There are these spiral pins that come with rhinestones and such in the center. YOu screw them in and they can help hold the braids in place while adding some bling. I found them at walgreens, I think the 6 pack was originally about $6 but they were on sale. I also found them at a place called SAMMOON. It's a big import store that carries all kinds of accessories, purses, etc. They had them in collections of a dozen for about $7 or so. Walmart or walgreens has all kinds of fancy hair bobs as well, combs, clips and barrettes or bobbies. Something in a white/diamond rhinestone or pearls and such would be very bridal!

If you want to go simple what about something like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rf2oZwSehWQ) and get some pretty clip to go in the back?

Thanks everyone!! In the end I went with something complete different, lol. It was a fairly breezy day so I found a LilithMoon tutorial and tucked my hair back but didn't do the twisting rope braid in the front because it wasn't very flattering. We found a hairpiece that had silk roses and some gauzy leaves with sparkly thingies and I tucked that over where all my hair was tucked it. It worked out great!

(Sorry it's so far back, this is the first pic we've gotten from the photographer but it gives a nice profile of my hair.)
