Not sure if my hair is long enough for this but I'm going to try it for fun anyway.

Too lovely not to try. :)

Funny, the Infinity Bun was my first LHC bun! And here is the picture of it:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=8248&pictureid=107596

My hair is a wee bit longer and much more slippery now so I have to twist very tightly to keep it from unraveling which results with my ii thickness in a very tall bee butt before the flip and a very lopsided infinity/figure 8. I took a bunch of pictures this morning but was unskilled with the focus. Here is one that illustrates the lopsidedness:
http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg632/neko_kawaii_hair/_DSC6074.jpg

So, then I wanted to play around with it and lately that means double buns:
http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg632/neko_kawaii_hair/_DSC6071.jpg
They hardly look like infinity buns at all with all those coils!

I have no idea if this is how it's supposed to look, but this is my first attempt:

I used a hairtie and there's a spin pin hidden in there somewhere.

O.k., let's try this:

Wah! How do I copy a photo from my photo album to this thread?
Give me every step, even the ones you think are intuitively obvious.

Oh never mind - here it is from photobucket, except it's more a figure-8 bun, isn't it?
No wait; it's an infinity bun standing on end. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I know; I know. I've got big buns and I cannot lie.

It was luck that it turned out so well (and that it held throughout my work day)! I just used a hidden plain bobby pin and the fancy one tucked in at the side. I haven't been able to reconstruct one so well since.

Hi Ruby Slippers! I think it depends how thick your hair is. The thicker it is, the more length you need. I don't have a lot of hair, but I can do a lot of buns that people with thicker hair can't yet. Someone with thick hair can probably give you a better answer, though.

Please tell me why it is I can do the Figure 8 and can hold it with one, sometimes two if I want it symmetrical, hairsticks.

However, I can't get an Infinity Bun to work without every piece and manner of hair pin, coils, whatever I can find to hold it in, and it gets to be more like a helmet than a lovely twist!

Why does it make such a big difference - upright for the figure 8, across for the infinity - when it's basically the same twisted bun, done in the same manner, only one goes up and one goes across.

So what's my problem? - I mean just with trying to make this Infinity Bun, let's not get too deep into everything else that makes me such a mess!.... ;o(

My first infinity bun - sorry for the mess.
Hairstick is from Hairjems on Etsy - bought since finding this form and being ENABLED.

laugh; yes, taking the pic is somehow harder than doing the hair...
i swing my hand over my head and have the camera upside down or use a mirror.
works for the back of the head and is it a good stretch *;O)

thanks for that link neko, the answer is obvious (10 second timer) and yet eluded me nonetheless. I have so many pictures of my ears or the trees it's not even funny.

OF course, that means digging out a real camera - or does the iPod have a timer? Nah, that's asking too much.

This is one of the many techniques I have tried, and yes, I think my arms are getting longer.

Maybe a pet monkey? I don't have any kids (at home) and the dog's a crappy photographer.

What I think is interesting about infinity buns is that it is a nuanced style, closely resembling (and technically almost identical) the figure 8 bun. Due to that, it's easy to see how the names and photos become interchanged.

I haven't done an infinity or figure 8 bun in a long time. After my hair was able to wrap a multitude of times when creating a bun, the comfort and aesthetic seemed to drop away. I'm sure one day I'll have the diligence to try and get an adapted one for my length/thickness combo.

elea
August 16th, 2012, 08:21 AM
my hair wraps a lot but only half my head is long so there isn't too much of it so i can still do the infinity bun. there are some buns that don't work with me because i don't have enough volume.
the figure of eight works too but i find it does not lasts as long on me unless i braid it.

(gumball, i am looking into that program you advised about the capitals. i will try the messages again but at the moment, it does not want to play).

what i really like is how the same infinity bun can look so similar and different according to each individual hair. absolutly lovely to watch the pictures.

I think WL is pretty much where an iii can start to do this bun, but it also depends on how slippery your hair is and how far into the iii category you are in. I am at BSL and cannot do this bun at all yet.:(

I can't do it either. My pony is almost 4". I am at midback at the longest point, and even have half of my natural volume due thinning shears and a short layer. I may have to get beyond hip to do this bun.

Thanks guys! I was getting despondent about my bunning abilities, but whatever way I twist it, it really is the length that's letting me down. I just can't get that second wrap the whole way round so it tucks under the folded out first wrap. (say that to a non LHC and see what they make of it!)

Oh well, all in good time.

Mine is also too short, even though I'm past waist and barely 3 inches in circumference. I think it's the layers. It thins out so much at the ends that I can only do one and a half wraps and have to tuck the rest underneath. Frustrating. Maybe I'll do it as a half-up with my shortest layers.
This is a cool bun I didn't know existed before I found LHC. :D Sarahlabyrinth, I love your bun and the hairstick.

When I first hit LHC, I was at waist but had a lot of layers. I found I could use the Cheater's Figure 8 even though regular Figure 8 didn't work for me. It involved making an L shape with the fingers and wrapping the hair around that to make the bun. Anyone have a link to existing directions? The one I used seems to be gone.

I have fond memories of the Cheater's Figure 8 as it was my first "LHC" bun success story. :)

August 26, 2012. Same bun, just different shots. Apparently I need to work harder at getting my ends tucked in! My hair is about 31.5" here, nearly HL.

Darn. I tried, but my hair isn't long enough for this yet! :(

Is this almost an infinity bun? Ignore the bits sticking out at the bottom obvs!

Thwarted by a crown braid this morning I thought I'd try this, and sadly even with Torrins great how to I can't do this yet :( even as a half up.

I'm with you ladies and gents waiting for waist to do this. Looks so pretty.

That's weird... I tried to do an infinity bun one or two weeks ago and I couldn't do it. I thought didn't have the length yet. I tried ten minutes ago and now I can. I wasn't expecting it to work, which is why is sits so low (I like the way it looks more when it's higher). It looks a bit weird because my hair thins out a lot at the ends (layers), but I'm just happy I can do an infinity bun.

And a half-up (this one I knew would work). Hair is stringy and yuck because it's been in an oiled bun for a few days :D:

- Thanks for linking great tutorials ! Video doesn't work for me either, I use a bad dongle . .

First try at making an Infinity bun:
http://i47.tinypic.com/esm0kp.jpg

The 2nd coil is thinner since my hair isn't as thick throughout, also you can see how much my sidecuts are growing out, super curly on the sides ^^

It's hard to see the bun since my hair's black o.o

Before this, I hadn't seen my natural curly hair in more than a decade . .

[tried making the pic smaller, it doesn't let me :/]

That red streaking through the bun looks really cool. And is that key dangling on the side an earring? Whatever it is, also cool. And is that a paintbrush? XD

Tried this a few days ago, was surprised how well it turned out :D I tried it with sticks but it looks better to me and is more comfy with regular bobby pins and two amish pins, which is how I did it for the photo.

Mine is too short. At about 2in from waist (29in) with a 3.8in thickness and tons of layers and thinning through the length, I still can't get that second wrap. :/ Oh buns. I can only do cinnabuns and vortex buns it seems.

This is from February. Not sure if I can do it now since I just had my layers redone.

I've done much neater versions but I wanted to get a picture of my new stick so here's a quick infinity bun. I'll try to get a better one when I haven't been doing yard work all morning.

The infinity bun is an appropriate hairstyle of the month for me right now. It is my first hairstyle of the month, I just learned how to do it last week after wanting to figure it out for over ten years, and the tutorial from torrinpaige that is posted at the beginning is one of the string of videos that lead me here in the first place. I also whittled myself a hairstick specifically for it because the one I had was slightly shorter than the bun and looked a little funny. I'll wear my hair like this to work tomorrow and try to get a decent picture.

Does a hypno-infinity bun count?
