So i started using coconut oil in mid july and i love it but a couple days ago i noticed i shed a lot! Can oiling the length cause shedding. Maybe its the protein? Or me being too paranoid? Can someone help?

I wouldn't think oiling the length would have any impact on shedding. There is no protein in coconut oil. How much are you shedding? What are you doing when you notice the shedding, brushing, shampooing? Give us a little more info, but I don't see how putting oil on the length would cause it.

If you're only oiling the length and not your scalp, I think it's unlikely to be the cause of your shedding.

When I oil my scalp, I get shedding, but it is very temporary. I only do a scalp oiling every few months so I don't worry about it. Oiling my length doesn't increase my shedding at all. I know coconut oil supposedly has no protein, but it gives my hair the exact same reaction as protein overload...

Hmm i notice shedding everywhere i go. I see them on pillows, on the floor as i sweep etc. I know coconut oil doesn't have any protein but it prevents protein loss so I don't know. I see my hair getting thinner. I have been paying attention to my hair lately more than my pre lhc days. Sigh. Also everytime i touch my hair, not brushing it or doing anything to it one or two hairs falls 90% of the time.

I leave hair everywhere. Seriously, I can run my hands over my carpet is a circular motion, and up comes a Raven-hairball. There are days that I don't know how I have any hair left, but I still have plenty on my head. I think it is more noticeable as hair gets longer, and looks more alarming. Are you sure it isn't normal shedding?

So you usually shed on average a lot? I mean for some people they can usually shed upward 100+ plus hairs a day and for them it turns out to be normal.
Since your hair is on the thicker side as well, so more hairs are going to shed as well.
But it could also be a seasonal thing, since
for me in the summer I tend to shed more as well.

I dont know what my normal shedding is. I really want to oil my hair D: can protein overload cause hair shedding? That sounds riducously though. Maybe my hair is going through a shedding phase.

I think protein overload can cause hair to break.

I have found that shedding is more noticeable when I oil. Not to say that I think I shed more, but the oil causes the shed hairs to stick to my hands, stick to the comb etc and be more noticeable. This, combined with a new awareness of your hair might make it seem like you are shedding more than normal. You might also have reached a length where the shed hairs are more noticeable. *shrug* Or, you could be experiencing a shed. It is hard to say when you don't have a benchmark to compare it to.

If you are worried about it, hold off on oiling for a while and pay attention to how much you shed. Some people save EVERY hair: comb, brush, shower drain screen etc, to really know how much they have shed. How you go about it is up to you.

I seem to lose a lot of hair also when I put oil on the length. I think that it is because my hair is so dry & tangily that when I put the oil (olive oil) on the length of my hair it makes my hair smoother & helps gets rid of the loose hairs that was tangled up in it causing the tangles. I can NOT comb my hair without having some oil on it.

I also just turned vegetarian. Maybe not enough protein in my diet is the problem? I eat tofu, almonds, drink milk, etc. How can i increase my consumption of protein and how many grams of protein is a healthy range? Thanks guys for helping me out (:
