How to link a picture into a thread, photo heavy.

Okay, I am going to put up a tutorial with things from start to finish, using Postimage.org (http://www.postimage.org/), as it seems to be the easiest I could find, and it appears to be unlimited, and it resizes pictures to forum width for you.

Here's what it looks like when you get to their page:

Register and log in, then click upload a photo and alter the size to message board size like so:

It will tell you upload complete and give you this link table at the bottom, you want to copy the hotlink for forum one:

You can do this either by hitting copy to clipboard, or highlighting and using right click to copy, or using crtrC.

Then you just paste in their link with either a right mouse click here, or a ctrlV:

the upload picture underneath the pics takes you directly to their site to upload more, so in using this method, it will allow other people to learn how simple it is to do as well.

Hotlinking one of your own pictures from a picture sharing site like this is okay. Hotlinking a copywrite picture is not, nor is hotlinking a picture from another site like this:

(because I'm hotlinking from my own forum it's okay for illustration purposes)

When you hotlink to a non file sharing site, you use up bandwidth from that site, so if there is a picture that you own, and you want to share it, that is how you do it.

How you can hotlink from a site that allows you to do so and it's not copywrite, you do it like so:

Right click the image and chose copy image url.
click this button:

paste the url of the picture into the popup and viola, it's magically posted into the body of your comment! Beware that it might not be a very good size for a forum post, so you would do well to resize images if they are too large, by downloading them first and putting them through an imageshare site like postimage.org.

I also like servimg.com and even imgur.com for photosharing, the last one is super easy, but sometimes forums don't accept their pictures. Good luck and please, test below some photos using these methods!


ETA: RESIZING PICTURES VIA URL EDITS

This works for Imgur and Flickr, it might work for other photo hosts too.

You may add a letter to the URL, right before “.jpg”. The letter you add depends on the size you want.

s = Small Square (90×90)
b = Big Square (160×160)
t = Small Thumbnail (160×160)
m = Medium Thumbnail (320×320)
l = Large Thumbnail (640×640)
h = Huge Thumbnail (1024×1024)

I'd love to try and help you out. You are on the right track! There are a few adjustments that will make everything start working.

Now if you use Flickr a lot, this will make it a lot easier for you. You probably got your photo from Flickr by clicking on the "More ways to share" button (http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3784/8759026144_abe5437af9_o.jpg) on your picture (http://www.flickr.com/photos/103757641@N02/10704233825/)and the code you posted is what came up.

Right under that code, underneath the drop-down menu where you can pic the size of the photo, are two small options: HTML and BBCode. When you click on the HTML option (that is always the first thing clicked when you try to share) you get the code you posted, but when you click the BBCode option instead, it changes the code to something that will work on the forum:

Your post links to a webpage instead of a picture. :) On that webpage you'll see "GET IMAGE LINKS" off to the right. Click on that and use what's in the "FORUM" box. On your picture, it's the following:

Make sure that what you copied ends with a picture-y file extension. .jpg, .png, .gif, and so on. It won't work without it.

ETA: In response to the below -- the forum uses BBCode. Usually copying something that says it's for BBCode or for forums will give you what you want.

I'm so annoyed because when I figured it out with Gumball, it seemed so obvious I was embarrassed. Now I can't figure it out again.

It gives me the options of HTML, BB code, or Link. But none of those work if I click the image insertion icon here when making a new post.

I notice that Chrome is actually shrinking it if I make the window smaller, which is nice. But I usually resize it to something like 800x600 before uploading it to a hosting site. In Windows, Irfanview is a great little image program that can do that, is fast, and has been around forever. If you're like me and want something a bit more serious for adjusting photos which you can also use for editing or drawing, GIMP is great.
