View Full Version : Which braid gives you the best braid waves?

When I first discovered braid waves, when I was APL and shorter, I really loved rope braids. If I put mousse in my damp hair and slept in it I would end up with really cool Hermione Granger looking hair the next day. Then all of a sudden it stopped making waves in my hair. (I swear it was a change that happened overnight.)

Now I'm debating between french and dutch 3 strand braids. I haven't figured out which works better since they seem about equal. They give me nice Galadriel waves as long as I braid them when my hair is 95% dry.

Also, how many braids do you make? I alternate between one and two braids.

French braids give you S waves, while Dutch braids create more of a Z pattern. Subbing to see the other answers!

I prefer the waves I get from the 3 strand dutch braid. I also like the french braid waves, but I'm still having a hard time when I french braid my own hair.

I put rope and fish tail, although rope gives me really pretty curl/waves which I love. The fish tail braids give me more braid waves, I just like the way they look on my hair better than the others

Dutch stays in my hair better but I have to make two to take effect.

When I was younger I would get waves from almost any braid I would do. But since I got to the teen years, I haven't had braid waves in a long time. Because my hair is so curly, it will pull itself up into curls very soon after being let loose from a braid. I think if I did many small braids I might have some braid waves.

I answered Dutch. I have always liked the waves that I get from them the most. It looks especially nice if I have more than one Dutch braid. I don't really wear rope braids but I imagine they'd make nice waves too.

I answered other because my best braid waves come from a combination of 2 braids - I love the french rope :) I like this because it gives coils rather than S or Z waves so it's most like my natural pattern (i struggle to maintain my natural pattern because my hair must be braided at night).

I voted 3-strand dutch. I hate the waves rope braids give me -- they're not even waves, just weird spirally twists that look really unnatural. And they're so tightly twisted it's a pain to comb through, so if I've done a rope braid I'll usually wear it until I wash my hair again. Plain old English, Dutch, or French work best for me.

I voted 'other' because I hate the way braid waves look in my hair. Just not very pretty. :( I'm hoping when my hair gets a bit longer and my layers grow out they'll look prettier. I've only tried English, French and Fishtail to try and get braid waves though.

So, perhaps I should try some more! :D I'll keep an eye on this thread to see what people like most. :)

I said 3 strand french, because I have never been able to get the hang of a dutch braid. And Rope braids don't really give me nice waves, they just make my hair look stringy, lol.... :)

I said other; just a single three-strand English braid, not French or Dutch. :)

Less strands give me more waves; I picked other. (Obviously, 6 strand is not up there)

Ditto -- the braidwaves I like best in my hair come from 2 English braids made with slightly damp hair.

Both the 3-stranded Dutch and French braids make great waves in my hair. :)

For me, it's definitely 3-strand dutch twin dutch braids.

If I want more spirally curls that are looser, I also like rope braids.

I love the waves I get from fishtail braid and rope braid. Also if I make a 3-strand french or dutch braid on damp hair.

What do you guys use to make the waves last longer? Mine fall down after few hours.

exactly the same, except bun waves look awkward with my layers most of the time.

If I'm going for more of a curly or loose wave, I'll split my hair into four sections and rope braid each one. But if I'm going for nice waves I'll separate it all into 2 or 4 and English braid those. Nothing fancy.

I usually don't need to put anything in my hair. I just get mine a little bit damp with a squirt bottle before braiding.
However, when my hair was shorter it didn't hold curl or waves at all. (Weird how that worked out, huh?) I used Tresseme mousse in my hair and braided my hair when it was damp. That held pretty well.
I've never tried aloe gel, but I've heard it's a very good alternative to using mousse or hair spray.

I voted other because the best braid waves happened after taking down 2 english braids I'd been wearing all day. See sig pic below.....I was amazed!

I voted for rope braids. 2 of them gives me nice "beachy" waves, 4 gives me almost curl-y waves. I like them because they don't really look like braid waves, more like a natural wave-y hair wave.

ETA: Hahaha, oops, I found this thread while google-searching braids, didn't realize how old it was!

The best waves I get are from twin Dutch braids or a combination Dutch braid, although that's mostly because my hair is too thick to be put up into a plain Dutch braid.

EDIT: Crap, I've participated in necromancy as well. :P

I chose other because the only name I know for it is an regular 3 strand English braid. I can't do braids that start at the top of my head for some reason. :/ I can on other people though lol, go figure!

Torrin just did a video on Braid Out results:

Her results are so beautiful, some quiet night I may try it.
