Of course we always notice the hair don't we? :D My favorite Olympian's hair right now is that of fellow Aussie Jessica Fox (she just won a silver in the canoe event). Here (http://london2012.olympics.com.au/athlete/jessica-fox) she is. I love it because of her gorgeous natural curl pattern, the length, the colour and also because I think it would be really difficult to keep hair healthy in her sport! She should win a Gold medal for hair care ;)

Whose hair do you admire at this year's Olympic Games? Why?

I watched the womens judo final (USA v...someone). While it wasn't the best hair, I did spend my time wondering why they had their hair in ponytails rather than a nice neat french braid to keep it from looking like they had been electrocuted!

Kerri Walsh Jennings, who plays beach volleyball for the US, keeps her hair in a braid for competition. Her hair isn't really long, at least by LHC standards, but I am constantly in awe of how THICK her braid is!

I love her long wavy locks and the golden brown\blonde color! :)

I'm quite impressed with how many of the female athletes have long hair. I'm counting it as long if it's APL or longer. My 2 favorites are Natalie Coughlin and Kerri Walsh Jennings. Natalie even has a Pantene commercial. I've been a big fan of Kerri Walsh's hair for a long time. She has the most amazing braid. It's so thick and it's mesmerizing to watch as it swings around when she plays volleyball. Her hair is a little above waist. Gorgeous! I've been paying more attention to the women's beach volleyball due to the great ponytails and braids.

A French will not hold for judo (at least at shorter lengths, trust me on this one, you still look electrocuted and now your head hurts), but a pony can be swiftly redone if the opportunaty arises.

ETA: It was USA vs UK.

I posted this over on the Welcome to the Olympics thread a week ago during opening ceremonies:

I just saw Australia's flag bearer, Basketball player Lauren Jackson. Looks like she has waist or maybe hip length hair.

What Tisiloves said. You end up literally rubbing your head more or less like a cat on their gi top, Trying to throw them or trying to get a hold, or get out of one. A pony is the most gentle thing you can do to protect your hair. realistically, in a pony, there's a better chance the hair will pull out of the hair tie instead of the scalp than in if it's in a tight braid.

Hahaha, rubbing like a cat, I'm never grappling without thinking of that again. :misskim:

I keep wondering about the women's gymnastic team's hair style choices this year. The buns with tails or messy buns with ends sticking out. Are those trendy?

Sanya Richards Ross always has awesome hair as well, looking forward to see what she does with it on the field.

I liked the sleek ponytails from women's gymnastics.
Some had cute glitters in the hair, like the Russian athletes . :)

By the way I really like Aliya Mustafina. ^^

The American swimmer Soni has beautiful hair.

I don't know her name, but the Russian silver medalist in the fencing competition had a gorgeous, thick, braid about 7 inches long.

I worry about the gymnasts and traction alopecia. It looks to me that some of their hairlines are very thin-looking. But anyway, I'm sure after their short-lived gymnastics days are over, their hairlines will fill in again.

Then I worry about some of the swimmers' hair. I think "I wonder if she covered that in oil to try to protect it from the chlorine?".

This. Aliya Mustafina (Russian bronze medalist in women's all-around) has some serious bald spots behind her ears. I've been pointing out the beginnings of traction alopecia on almost all of them to my family as we watch. They pull their hair back so tightly! I hope you're right about them filling in again after they retire.

MsBubbles
August 3rd, 2012, 09:33 AM
Zesty, actually I have no idea if it will fill in again. I just assumed that since the stress of the ponytail pulls the strands out, that no stress would allow the new hairs to stay in just fine. But I don't know for sure. I hope so!

I get a headache just looking at those tight tight super tight buns and ponytails the gymnasts wear. *OUCH* I love all the glitter though.

I saw one of the winners in the swimming pool had stunning waist length brown hair, infact a lot of them had long hair, it looked tremendous. Yes I was drooling they not only have long beautiful hair but they can swim like a fish too.

PS: my kiddie nickname for a while was the Otter cause I swam so much. :)

^^^ That lady is drop dead gorgeous! I must confess that I too have been drooling over hair, especially during the opening ceremony parade where it was more readily apparent (hair was down, more or less)!

My vote is for Victoria Pendleton, although the Swedish 10,000 m runner and the US heptathlete (Foutain?) win on styles (pigtail plaits with blue and yellow ribbons, and a curly puff pony with flat twist headband respectively).

My mens vote goes to the Polish shotputter with SL blond hair, who looked like a viking.

That hungarian swimmer is indeed gorgeous! I like her hair too, but I do think it looks a bit dry/damaged on the ends (in that first photo). I would expect that though, given her sport.

She's not a competitor, but I absolutely loved the hair of the girl who played the part of "June", the young girl in the pop music tribute. I love seeing long, healthy natural hair...simply gorgeous. She was a great dancer too! I think her name was Jasmine something, I'll see if I can find a picture...

Lisa Norden, a Swedish triathlete had what looked like a diagonal dutch braid. Here's the best pic I could find.

They seem to be. I'll never understand it. When I was a gymnast, I wanted my hair up and out of the way completely. Especially for competitions, I wanted it sturdy and contained. None of these floppy bun things.
I did like the sparkles in the Russians' hair, though.

That being said - the sport(s) I like to watch tend to involve people with bunned or short hair, so I don't get to admire anyone's hair. :( But I am joining you in admiring all the ones posted so far!

I've seen that a lot in dance, because of the tight buns, and I've been wary of it myself - for me, I've found that the best way to guard against it is to let the bun out as soon as possible after class or rehearsal, and if my hair still needs to be contained, I'll do a low, loose ponytail or braid. Of course, if I'm performing, then it's so shellacked that it won't come down without a wash. This may also be why I haven't been big on complex updos off-hours - gotta let it breathe!

And then I do it and it's not as magnificent.
