What are the advantages (and perhaps disadvantages) of silicone-free conditioning?
Also what is your favorite silicone-free conditioner and why do you use that silicone-free conditioner over other silicone-free conditioners?

I use Biotera conditioner for my cone-free days. I use a few days of cone-free and then a few days of cone-full just to mix things up. Too much cone-full can cause me a lot of build up, but my hair doesn't respond as well to the cone-free conditioner, so I have to use cones from time to time.

I use White Rain and VO5 conditioners. Simply because they are cheap and I am going to try to stay on this CO wash regime. Sometimes I switch off to Mane n Tail though for a little protein.

Cones are mostly avoided either because your hair doesn't respond well to them, or you are not using traditional shampoo and are worried about build-up.

Water-soluble cones are nice because they can give you attributes of cones (slip, sealing, and damage-hiding) without the worry of build up. They are recognizable because they will be labelled PEG-(some number) -- the higher the number the more water soluble.

Not all cones build up equally; luxepiggy had this to say in the CO thread:

The following 'cones do NOT build up due to the inherent nature of their chemical structure: amodimethicone, bis-aminopropyl dimethicone, silicone quaternium, trimethylsilylamodimethicone.

The following 'cones do NOT build up because they slowly dissipate from the surface of the hair within a day: cyclomethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, and any other 'cone beginning with "cyclo-".

The following 'cones do NOT build up because they are water-soluble: dimethicone copolyols.http://scr.template-help.com/13200/13257.html

Also, some wavies and curlies feel that cones get rid of their curl, and avoid cones because of that.

I'm a CO person and I use a mixture of cones and no-cones, depending on how my hair feels. It usually works out that I use cones about once every 10 days-ish.

I love cones because of the slip and less frizz, though I've found using the right cone-free condish gives me great slip, and adding honey to my conditioners helps fight my frizz.

TBH the main reason I use cone free stuff mostly right now is because I bought 12 bottles of great cone-free conditioner for about NZ$2.60/litre. My coney stuff is NZ$15/900 mls.

That is such a great list.....I wish my local store had such a good selection. I live in a small town and the choices are so limited. I don't use shampoo or conditioner with cones just because I have very dry hair, but I do use an oil mixture that has cyclopentasiloxane in it that helps to tame the frizzies, it is supposed to dissipate so hopefully is doesn't cause build up. It sure makes combing easy and I like that!

I like to use a mix of 'cone and 'cone-free, as my scalp doesn't appreciate 'cones. For me the main difference is my hair is visibly wavier without 'cones, but so, so much easier to detangle with them.

I used to use a coney conditioner (dimethicone) and it worked to smooth and de-frizz my hair for years, though it also straightened my hair a little. Recently, though, I had more stubborn frizz, so I decided to lay off the silicones for a while and see if I could find a more natural routine that worked. I'd like to find a simple routine that doesn't need shampoo, because my hair is easily dried out. I'd also like to find a routine that moisturizes my hair from the inside out, rather than putting silicone band-aids on it. I may experiment with water soluble silicones at some point but I'm not at that point yet.

I'm currently using Everyday Shea conditioner, and I find it easy to detangle when my hair is covered in conditioner. I don't really mess with my hair at other times.

My new fav is Aubrey organics GBP conditioner. It does contain protein but my hair needs it and the balance is perfect! Nice soft, strong and still has some slip!

Right now my favorites are Giovanni (both the SAS and the 2chic lines) for when I want protein ..and and I'm also really liking 'Say yes to Carrots' for when I need more moisture.

I don't necessarily avoid cones, but if I use them in my shampoo/conditioner they make my hair straighter than when I just use a separate coney serum. So I usually opt for cone free shampoo/conditioners.

My hair hates cones, and I've tried just about all of them., so I've pretty much given up on them. Many cone-free conditioners don't work all that well, either, so I have a pretty short list of ones that do.

I just started using Everyday Shea conditioner in the Vanilla Mint scent! I'm using it because I don't like the idea of putting chemicals on your head...Also, more natural products tend to have lighter fragrances added. I have bad allergies to most artificial scents. So far, the conditioner is working fairly well.

Kind of off here but are we talking about silicone free conditioners or alternate conditioning methods? If it's the former then ACV wouldn't go here would it? Sorry for posting besides I don't know much about these non silicone conditioners because I jumped on the WO bandwagon three months ago... Sorry... :(
