View Full Version : Fastest, easiest twist up?

I've been twisting and putting a giant jaw clip on my hair to get it out of my way, but that really doesn't look that good for going out in public. There's always a big knob of hair right at the very top above the clip, and then a straggly tail hanging out the bottom side of the clip. So what is the absolute easiest and fastest updo that still looks presentable in public and not like you only spent 3 seconds on it, even though that's really all I want to spend? :D

Do you have any sticks? :)

I love the this* for it being both super easy & super quick!

Or you could try a french twist, they are super easy, quick, and look elegant!

Depends on how long your hair is. There is the cinnamon bun, lazy wrap, & Spidermom's bun that stays. They are all quick and easy, but require a stick. I'm also not sure what length you need, probably depends on your ponytail circumference.

If your hair is shorter then the peacock twist or french twist are both good options.

It's almost waist length, sort of fine textured strands (I've seen finer), thicker than average but not super thick. I haven't had good luck getting all that tucked into a French twist, and I am trying to make hair sticks (have the dowels, pins, and baubles) but I can't find a drill tiny enough to make the holes in the dowels. If you can recommend a tiny drill I'm all ears. :)

Thanks, I will go watch that video right now!

Top knot? Just tuck the ends in.

I find the flipped bun to be the easiest and fastest for me. Also it's quite pretty.

Gibraltar bun, or lazy wrap. Gibraltar topographically is just a twisted version of lazy wrap. You can youtube both instructions, or go off the hairstyle list here, which I can't find right now. And you do need a stick, but it doesn't have to be fancy. I've used ballpoint pens with smooth ends, a spoon works ok, the trick there is to use the spoon like you're scooping just inside your outside coil, then turn the spoon so the flattest way slides through the hair next to your scalp (rotate the spoon 90 degrees in your hand) then scoop your way out just inside the other side of the outer coil (unrotate 90 degrees). A knitting needle, a short skewer, a toothbrush without that rubber thing on the end, a letter opener, a crochet hook, almost everyone has one of those. Anything smooth, I use a 4 inch working length, that keeps it out of your way - hairsticks can get caught on your companions or on your car roof - ow to your hair and goodbye hairstick, most times. I use a baby spoon sometimes.

seashell bun using 2 or 3 spin pins.

Pencil bun. Just wrap any extra around the base of the bun. I can put one up in literally about five seconds, and it looks very nice.

I like a classic bun myself.

May not be useful until your hair is waist length or beyond...but I start to do Hypnotica's french twist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ngg3rQzxBEA&feature=plcp) for very long hair where you double up the length when twisting it up, creating a loop at the top. I fold the loop down over the top of the twist, and stick a thin, light Quattro pin through it to hold it. Very fast and easy to do. If there are any stray tails sticking out I just fold & tuck them around the top of the bun-like contraption I just formed.

I deem this tidy enough to wear most days to my office job.

I have fine, hip length hair but not much of it: about 2.75" circumference. So a short light pin works well, rather than a thicker stick or heavy ficcare.

To be honest? Metal double-pointed knitting needles are my favorite hairsticks. They're just the right length (for my thick hair/wide buns, at least), strong but not bulky (I usually use size 2 or 3 or so), smooth so they don't catch my hair, cheap, colorful, come in sets of 5, and quite frankly could be used as a self-defense weapon in a pinch. :)

(Personally I find a cinnamon bun very fast, so that's my quick-and-dirty updo of choice.)

This was helpful. I'm going to add this link to us in the shoulder to APL thread, OK?

I can do the Chinese bun in less than 30 seconds. It's my office go-to. Before I had hair sticks, I used a new, freshly sharpened pencil. My hair is between collarbone and armpit length, and even this short I can do the bun.

What about a center held bun (http://youtu.be/fKIAvh9Nu1E)? You could use whatever clip you'd like, and it does only take a few minutes :)

How about a Nautilus bun? I can put my hair up in one in about 5 seconds and it will usually hold without a stick.

If I don't have any pins on me I will twist up and over and around (is that a cinnabun?) And tuck the ends into the center underneath. It will stay like that. If I have a hair pin--usually use roller pins--one at the correct angle will hold a peacock twist. Neither of those takes more than 5 seconds. The peacock looks nicer.

This is my current favourite. You just twist your hair toward the side of your head, pull it over and clip it.

Mine is a layered V shape, 29" at the very bottom of the V, somewhat coarse-ish so not too slippery, and wavy (just to give you an idea). My latest quick go-to style has been to simply pull it all back and start twisting up a bit like beginning a French twist. After a couple of twists, I fold the top over into a loop, twist the loop once or twice, which brings the tail into the twist, and then use a Linziclip at the top of the loop to hold it. Any bit of tail still sticking out the end just gets tucked in.

It is faster to do than to describe, of course.

If you don't know, a Linziclip is just a jaw clip that is flat, so you don't have the sides sticking up.

I have 3 quick go-to buns right now. Nautilus, Gibraltar, and the Hypno bun. I can do them in no time at all and tuck in a stick, hair fork, or ficarre and done.

I really like this quick stick updo, what kind of waves/bends/kinks do you get from it? (I'll probably test this out on damp hair just to see for myself, but I'd love to hear your -and anyone else's- experience) :)

All of this! :D I can't really do any other buns beside the cinnamon, and sticks tend to pull too much in one place or another, but my bent knitting needle pins are the best! Plus, I always have the option of pulling one out and holding it in my fist so that the ends point out from my knuckles for self defense! ;) :p

I do this hairstyle lots. I use it with my sticks and forks, because that loop at the top is a great place to insert them. Sometimes I pull the hair from the twist up to cover the loop and smooth it.http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/3461/dscf1015tu.jpg
