Ok, I finally took hairtyping pictures which I have never done. This is my hair air dried and finger-combed:

This is my hair half up where you can see my nape waves:

And closer up:

Who else has split hair personalities? PICTURES!

I have the same thing. My nape hair is really wavy, andthe rest of it has a tiny bit of wave.I love your hair, by the way!

My nape hair is straight as an arrow! My canopy and ends like to fly around, especially around my face :) I am a 1b some days and a 1c others!

My hair is similar, although I do have a slight wave in my canopy. But the underneath layers are much more wavy.

My nape hair is.... I don't even know  It's coarser and feels all gross and rough. No matter what I do, it always feels nasty and dried out. I'm just thankful the rest of my head doesn't look or feel like that.

Eta: Found an old pic that I took of it.

Looks nothing like the rest of my hair. Sooooooo glad it's always hidden in a bun or under the rest of my length.

Comparison shot, another patch of hair. Both sets have been treated the same way. Oiled and damp bunned. Same products and tools used.

Eta again: Just took another picture of the same patch of hair, doesn't look nearly as bad now as it did back then, but it's still naaaaasty

Tia, I can't see your first pic.

Bene, that is WEIRD!

Weird, I think I am the opposite! My nape layers are about 1c or 2a while my canopy is 2b, sometimes even 2c. Canopy is also very coarse while nape layer is medium. It's odd.

Bene, my nape hair is the same way. The top layer of hair is very fine but my nape area is very coarse and icky. I hate it.

Me too! I'm always worried that when the hair dresser layers my hair she'll forget this and I'll have this weird long straight layer sticking out

The bits directly over my ears and some at the nape are 1a. The rest is 3a, except for this one perfect 3b curl at the nape on the left.

I don't know how many personalities the naughty mess has. I have asked him twice now and he just keeps laughing at me.:cheese:

My overall length is a pretty solid 2b, but I have some 2c spirally areas around my face when freshly washed, and my baby hairs (the frizzy little ones with a short terminal length that never grow long enough to do anything with and that give me a permanent "halo") are usually more like 3a. Also, I have crazy variety among the individual hairs themselves -- the majority are 2b and medium thickness, but I have small numbers of fine 3c/4a hairs (seriously, they corkscrew and S-wave, with the diameter of the wave being anywhere between a coffee stirrer and a pencil) and even smaller numbers of slightly coarse 1b. The hair does what the hair wants.

if i just let my hair air-dry my nape hair does the same thing. drives me crazy...so i put my damp hair on a ponytail to avoid it

I posted a thread about this some time back, here:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=20900&highlight=mixed

Lately I've realized that my short terminal length (BSL or shortly after) probably has to do with the fact that two of my three hair types won't grow.

While I could spend hours wishing for hair that does grow, or behave, or look the same day to day, or be smooth, knowledge is very much power in this case and means at least I am not beating myself up any more because of how my hair looks!

I think the variances are something to be celebrated, that make us unique and our hair special :)

Nice thread! My hair is so bizarre it drives me nuts. This is probably why I've cut it so many times. I've had this stupid that if I cut it all of, it will grow like "normal" hair!

Honestly, my hair goes from nearly straight in some areas, to bits that will actually form ringlet curls! Drives me insane. This is why I used to straighten my hair... it was so much easier to make my loose hair look presentable when I straightened. Otherwise, I get annoyed by how it's straighter on one side than the other, by the weird bumps and lumps at the back... and by just its general stupidity! I am actually hoping that if it gets to a reasonable length it will look more "regular". I think the only way to make it look regular now would be to shave it off :D.

So yeah, I keep persisting in the hope that in awhile my hair will look at least a little more regular in general appearance. Just so I can wear it loose without thinking "OMG my hair looks stupid!!"

THIS! Every cut I get, I also think my hair will grow back in 'normal' but the bumps, frizz, wiry ringlets, weightless fine bits just keep coming back.

Plus short terminal length, which is really disappointing. I was hoping that growing it out - longer than BSL, which it's never been - would make it more presentable. At this point, I'Ve given up!

Oh man, my hair has split personalities too. I'm opposite of you though! lol The top is wavy (and getting wavier every few years it seems...), yet the under layer is almost stick straight. I'd say like a 1b!
I type myself as a wavy though since the majority of it is, but that straight nape hair drives me nuts sometimes when I'm trying to learn to love my waves. The straight hair is silky soft and very fine.
