View Full Version : Show me your layers!

I know a lot of lovely people here love their blunt hemlines, etc.

But what about our layered lovelies? :D

I am hoping to get layers at some point, so..

Show us your layers and tell us if you love them or hate them!

(Or if you're growing them out, if you're contemplating getting layers, etc.:))

I just got them recently - long layers (see sig); love 'em. It's a nice change. When I get tired of them, I'll blunt it up again.

I'll take a picture next time I wash... I have layers and hate them, they make braiding a pain and I feel as though I have thin hair. They look nice, though; just not in a braid. The shortest is shoulder, the longest is at waist, and I really don't know why I ever though that could be a good idea.

Spidermom your Sig pic is soo gorgeous! I love layers in general, but hate the layers I currently have (big difference between longest and shortest and upside down U shaped), so I am trying to grow them out so I can have new ones put in! If I can get a pic where you can actually see the layers I'll put it up, usually it just looks like my hair gradually fades into rat ends tho! They show up better when my hair is straightened but I'm rationing heat use atm.

ETA: here is one a few months old where I straightened using very large rollers. Sorry its a bit dark in places (and also massive)!

My layers are a love/hate thing.

I just wish mine weren't so short (shoulder) and would blend into my hair better. When I plait my hair at night they fall out by the morning so I have wavy hair apart from my layers which look straight and awkward.

This is what they look like now:
http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj600/LucyLilyPad/layerstooshort.jpg

I would prefer them if they were more subtle and would blend in better to the rest of my hair like they did a few years ago:
http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj600/LucyLilyPad/subtlelayers.jpg

But at least they don't look like they did last year anymore :D :
http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj600/LucyLilyPad/layersblergh.jpg

As much as I moan about my layers, I can't really ever see me going back to a blunt cut. At least not in the short term! I just wish they were longer! :)

I have two kinds of layering and it is ... well challenging to say the least.

First my hair textures are different in the differenent areas and then there are actuaul length difference. So my crown is the shortest and it is the coiliest( is that a word :o) So left on its own it coils up and appraer ever so short leaving the next layer under neath in the rear to spring up almost as much. Then walah this uncoily semi curl lower layer that hangs all alone. Though I have thin hair this springy action makes it look thinner. Makes it impossible to wear hair loose for a moment because, thats right the coilies love to wrap around the longer hair mid shaft and that would mean instant tangles. It will never change on that level I just want them to be the same length long for nice braids and buns.:)

Ultrabella, I absolutely adore your hair! Both long and short. I'd love to have my hair like yours in the long picture. I think the layers work on really thick hair.

I like having layers because my hair is too thick and poofy if I don't straighten it. My shorter layers are around APL and the longest are a little below BSL. I think it works for me. I can't imagine how awkward my hair would be if I had a blunt cut. Actually I can, I had a blunt cut in grade school and it was horrible. My hair poofed everywhere and especially at the bottom.

I have multi-layers, but one that stands out that's ear-level. Unless my hair's brushed out, it blends really well. You can see in my sig pic why I cut it. It's purpose was to give me crown volume. It's grown out a couple of inches now. I'm not sure what I'll do next.

I'm still debating whether or not to completely grow mine out. I might just keep some longer layers eventually. I don't like anything to hang above shoulder length. I love how they look down but hate how the pop out of my braids.

There's a significant space--on me, about 3 or 4 inches--between my shortest layer (ear-length) and the next one down. Hairstylists are taught to make sure all layers blend, so that this doesn't happen. The best way I can describe mine is that it looks like there are bangs laying on top of my other hair. It looks funny when it's fairly straight, but when curly it seems to blend. One of these days I'll post pictures of straighter and curlier.

Actually they way I got my hair like that was heat free :D I let it mostly air dry so it was still damp, but regularly brushing it so that as much as the curl as possible was brushed out. Then I put my hair in MASSIVE rollers (they are larger than the size of my fist), wrapped hair in a silk scarf (more to stop the rollers falling out, they are not very secure when they are that massive), waited until my hair was totally dry then took the rollers out. It gives me pretty straight hair with some nice volume. :)

You ladies have amazing layered hair!

These are the newest photos of my layered hair. My hair is dry but unbrushed. I cut the layers myself about a year ago with an upside-down ponytail method but I'm hoping to grow them out eventually or at least to thicken my longest layers a bit. I don't know if I like them or not - it depends :) But I think I'll like my layers more when they get longer.

It seems so easy! How many rollers did you use? I have tried using rag curls to get the same effect, but end up with ringlets and frizz. I just dampened my hair with spray gel and rolled it up in a huge soft scrunchie sock bun style, I'm off to bake some cookies, and hopefully get some big beautiful curls *like your picture)while I do!

I love my layers, because with my curls, a blunt hairline just makes the dreaded triangle look. Layers give more dimension to my hair, and really, decreases the volume of my curls. I first got layers after growing my hair out from a buzzcut. I waited patiently (ok more like neglectfully) through the mullet phase, and after that it was just nice layers. :)

Do any of you lovely layered women cut your own hair?

Yup! I've experimented with different methods for years, but I think my favorite (and simplest!) is to put all my hair upsidedown and cut the bottom straight across. Like giving myself a blunt hairline, but upsidedown. Rightsideup, I get layers!

The cookies are done! I'll send some right over lol! The one huge curl thingy with the scrnchie turned out good, its a bit crunchy from the gel I used but it'll soften up soon. My hair never dried in a sock bun, even damp, so I might use this for similar results from now on! What sort of roller did you use? Foam, those velcro ones or soemthign else? maybe a bundle of rags and lots of bobby pins would work?

Yay I'm glad they turned out well! :) Mine never dries in a sock bun either.

The rollers I used were the velcro kind, the largest of these ones in fact: Trevor Sorbie Self Grip Hair Rollers (http://www.boots.com/en/Trevor-Sorbie-Self-Grip-Hair-Rollers_868076/). For scale the smallest one in that pack is a similar size to one of the larger sizes in a 'normal' pack of rollers, I think the biggest one is about 4 inches in diameter. I know some people feel velcro rollers aren't the kindest sort, but they are an awful lot less damaging than my 200 degree straighteners and I'm gentle when using them.

ETA: anitacs9101 your hair is stunning, I love the fiery wavy shininess! Your layers are the sort I think I'm going to go for once these ones grow out.

Mingle: Thanks!! I started deep oiling a couple times a month (try to make it once a week but I've been lazy!) I CO-wash and oil my hair on the day of the wash as well as the 2 days following, usually with some sort of Argan oil blend (I got mine at Wal-Mart, it's a blend of some different oils). When my hair is half dry I put it in a lazy French twist and keep it clipped up for the rest of the day. Take it out the next morning, let it dry fully, oil it, then twist it up again. After an hour or so it curls and twirls around like in my picture, and almost looks like I took an iron to it. :) It'll stay wavy like that until I wash it again.

Sounds like more work than it actually is, haha.

Mine gets kinda stuck on them too, you cant just unwind the hair off them easily. Going slowly and gently by putting your finger under the section of hair between the roots and the roller and gently lifting the hair away from the roller until its all unrolled is how I do it, but it's not always easy! I watched a load of YouTube videos about Velcro rollers to work out how to get them to stay in only to find it hard to get them out! A few more videos later and I was ok! :D

Ooh, your hair is gorgeous! I'm very impressed that you cut your own layers! I'd be too scared :D

Beautiful, jaine! I was wondering if perhaps you could give me a little more detail on how you used the wooden spoon for cutting your layers. ;)

Hi luluj,
Here's a drawing to show what I'm doing. I take a small section of hair, pull it straight out from my scalp, brush it to get the hairs even, measure it with the spoon, and cut off anything that's longer than the spoon. Repeat all over my scalp. I use claw clips to fasten the hair that I already cut.

After I'm done with the layers, I do Feye's self trim in the back because I like a thick hemline. So the hair at the nape of my neck ends up 3-4 inches shorter than the length of the cooking spoon. I cut enough off the back so that the hair at my temples becomes part of my hemline.

I've been getting layers to make my hair thinner due to it's thickness, for years. It helps SO much! It sucks when I do braids though, since I always have pieces hanging out. You can see my sig pic or other pics I have posted on here.

Ah, well... I really need to update a pic of dry, curly hair. I have damp curly hair and straightened hair for you today:

(In this pic hands are at top of hipbone, my in-between goal where I will feel like I have long hair. I really didn't think I was this close. My curls eat up more length than I thought.)

(Don't really know where my hands are in this one... Ah well.)
Growing out layers... so long. :p

My layers :) I think they look pretty down, but I will eventually cut them out because it makes braids and updos soooo difficult, hairs stick out EVERYWHERE...:(

Now this is exactly what I want. And what I never get, I might add. How exactly did you ask for this at the hairdressers?

If my hair wasn't layered, I couldn't get it to swoop like in my userpic. The front is a little bit longer than chin, while the back is waist. My layers create a giant U shape. I think I will always keep face framing layers, however I'd like to grow the ones in the back out.

Everyone here has such beautiful layers. I love layers and I have soft long ones.

Farah Dhukai has videos on cutting her own hair layers. I am not brave enough yet, nor is my hair long enough for this look.

Love my layers. Though, you can't see them very much because my hair is so dark and I'm too lazy to curl my hair or whatever it is you're supposed to do to show off your layers.

A salon. I wouldn't dare try to cut my own hair.

Wow! Spidermom - that really does look nice!

:o Thank you so much!(: I don't think I have any juicy hair secrets for you though(; right now I'm washing with cv bars/condition/acv rinse. But I think I was using natures gate in this picture. hehe I'm still experimenting to find my favorites:p I don't like how I look with the one-length length style that seems to be generally favored LHC so I'm really flattered that you like it!:)

My hair a couple years ago (May 2010) Im considering layers again. I liked the manageability when washing and handling. Also the way my hair swings and bounces when wearing my hair down. Im not an updo person and find they are beckoning again. My sister recommended her stylist. She's growing her hair but recently had a small trim to freshen her layers. Looks great and there was hardly any length off at all.

Thank you :) They're really a pain but I'm trying to grow them out from a a-line cut. I think it would look better longer too ^^
