These are photos of my grandmother Laura in 1898 aged 22 and in 1916 aged 40.

My father always told me that she had beautiful long hair which was long enough for her to sit on. That would make it "classic" length I guess.

I love the look of her bun in the 1898 photo, I wish she would turn around so I could see it better, lol.

Does anyone think she might be wearing rats in the 1916 picture?

Does anyone else have interesting old photos? I love looking at the old fashions as well.:)

On both sides of my family in the old photos the women all had shorter hair. Though there aren't many photos as both families were poor in rural areas. I still find them fascinating and beautiful though.

I think this may have been her wedding portrait but don't know for sure.

Hair rats have been used for centuries. There were also something that looked like donuts - and other shapes - that were used when the "pompadour" style was all the rage...think Edwardian era or late Victorian.

She isn't a long hair, but these are the only photos I have of any ancestor that show hair in any detail. This is my maternal grandmother, probably in her late teens and early twenties. We have more photos of her than is typical because she was a saxophonist and dancer and so there are publicity stills. The group shot and the one on the right are publicity shots, the bottom one I think is her senior high school photo.

She had wavy hair as you can see, which sometimes she enhanced (group shot) and sometimes she tried to tame (far right). My mom and I have a slight wave, my son does too.

This is my great-grandmother with her parents and most of her siblings. It's before the youngest was born, so probably around 1914 or so? My great-grandmother's the gal in the back on the right. The older gals all wore their hair in buns, and the 4 younger ones had pretty uneven short bobs :)

And this is my great-great-grandmother (the mom in the first picture) with her triplets. That was a *huge* deal back in the early 1900s! Anyway, she had very long hair, but it was always in a bun. I guess when you have a dozen or so kids, buns are a practical hairstyle!

Another of my great-grandmothers had knee length hair until she died. My mom talks about seeing it down one time, and that it was beautiful and snowy white.

My paternal grandmother had wonderful thick, wavy hair that was past her knees as I remember She always wore it braided, pinned up and covered, so not real sure on her hair. She had no pictures of her family that she discussed and never allowed a photograph to be taken of herself. There are deeply personal and killing painful reasons for this.

My maternal grandmother was a wild woman in her day. She cropped her hair short years before it was fashionable. Never past her chin, she cut it off her neck usually. Her sister also wore short hair until and I quote "All the fuddy-duddy blue hairs are cutting their hair, so I am going to not cut my hair now." And she never again cut her hair. She always wore it down and loose. When I started dying my hair odd colors, Evie figured she'd do that better as she had white hair. Then she found neon pink and she had that for the rest of her life.

My mother has always had short hair, she got cat fine from her mother and sparsely thin from her father. Anything past a pixie is limp and ratty on her hair.

I believe my maternal great grandmother had between waist and classic hair that she never pinned up as pins broke her hair. What family remembers is she'd cut her hair to her belt then ignore it until she sat on it, then cut to her belt and repeat.

I come by my rabble rousing honestly at least.
