Well to be honest I don't think I've ever properly clarified my hair, so I was just wondering what is the best way to do it?

I've noticed recently I have a whole load of build up, and it needs to be gone. But, I don't really know what to do. Could someone help me out?

Also, what does clarifying actually do for your hair?

You either buy and use a clarifying conditioner -- lots of people love Neutrogena's Anti-Residue Shampoo -- and use it from the roots to the tips once or twice, or you can mix up a diluted baking soda mix and use that instead of shampoo, making sure to follow up with a diluted vinegar rinse.

Clarifying strips all the oils and much of the buildup from your hair. It does not chelate mineral buildup though. For that you would need a chelating shampoo.

Also, after clarifying, you should do some sort of conditioning treatment.

I've seen a lot of good reviews about this product so I'll probably give this one a try. I'll buy the conditioner with the shampoo as well.

Would you say that either of those is suitable for someone sensitive to perfumes? I tried the neutrogena and it took over a week to wash the smell out.

Ooh I have another question about the Herbal Essences product. I've noticed this is called "fresh balance" and I always thought the Herbal Essences clarifying shampoo was called "drama clean". Are they still just the same shampoo/conditioner except they just changed the name of their product?

I use the baking soda method with no problems. I also use a citric acid rinse, doesn't this chelate minerals?

You don't have to buy a special clarifying shampoo, pretty much any shampoo will clarify. Any sulfate shampoo will work just fine, and coco. betaine is known to clarify well too. Even milder surfactants can clarify, but you may need a couple washings to get all the residue.

Clarifying removes residue from the hair, that can be left from silicones, quats, or oils.

More important than the shampoo you choose is the thoroughness with which you wash. Be sure the shampoo coats all your hairs before you rinse it off.

I Dilute 3 TBS of baking soda in a 16oz bottle of water and use it as a shampoo and use a moisturizing conditioner afterwards. I only clarify once every three weeks so my hair doesn't dry out.

When I've got loads of build-up I go for a SLS-shampoo that's left from my old stash. But I only do this when it's really bad and I always pamper my hair like crazy after it. But when I catch the signs of build-up early on (crispy ends are a hint for me) I just use my normal mild shampoo to clarify and put it on my ends as well. Recently I added ACV to my regular routine, because it helps restore the acid mantle after cleansing and removes some of the product-residue that's left in your hair so I don't have to clarify as often as I did before.

Treseme deep clean or Pantene clarifying shampoo do the job for me, they leave my hair very soft and manageable. I always follow with a deep moisturising conditioner, lee Stafford's is my favorite at the moment. I normally clarify when my hair feels and looks dull, I normally get more tangles too when it needs doing.
I'd never clarified my hair before joining here and was shocked at how lovely it make my hair feel, it still does I love clarifying days!

I dilute baking soda with water and use that to clarify.
