View Full Version : Best PLAIN hair sticks/forks?

I'm completely fed up with my hair and I've decided to finally invest in a hair stick and fork, but I'm bewildered by all the choice. The keyword here is PLAIN. My style skews to the tomboyish end of the spectrum, and I'm after something to just jam into an 'I don't care, get it off my face' messy updo and forget about.
Wood, metal and acrylic are good materials. Totally plain. What should I go for?

One of these would perhaps work nicely.

There is a pair of them on the swap board in blue right now. (not mine)
They also make great cheap acrylic sticks that can be worn in damp hair.

Doesn't get much plainer than a quattro:

I bought a set of 6 coco wood chopsticks from Ebay for around £3 I think, very pretty wood with unusual grain, then just cut them down to size, sharpen & sand. Simples (and very cheap!!)

Wooden dpns (double pointed knitting needles) make nice straight sticks. They come in a variety of thickness and length.
The metal ones make very nice simple hair forks too if bent over a door-knob. These are often my go-to fork - especially if my hair is wet. They hold super well for my slippery hair. I can hold my hair up all night with just one!

For wood sticks, I like Ketylo hair sticks (ketylo.com).For wood forks, I like 60th street (etsy). As for metal hair sticks/forks, I'm a fan of the basics from Quattro (etsy) :D

I too like my sticks quite plain, I'm not into topped sticks at all. I LOVE Pacific Merchantile on etsy for my sticks (as linked in the first reply), I usually buy acrylics from him but I also have 4 wooden sticks sent to me as freebies and those are lovely too

Ditto on Pacific Merchantile. They're no fuss and not expensive, but they're high quality and won't snag your hair or anything. I recommend an acrylic one in a neutral color because then you can wear it in damp hair, in the shower, in the pool, etc, and it becomes much more versatile. If you like the look of plain wood better, he's got that covered too.

This perfectly sums it up ^^
And like other have said, Pacific Merchantile is a great choice too if you get a plain colour.

For plain (but nice looking) sticks, you can't go wrong with Pacific Merchantile on etsy. Both his wood and acrylic sticks are wonderful. They don't cost too much either.
Forks - I would check Jeterforks on etsy. Inexpensive and not too fancy, but they work well and are functional. I, personally, love his forks. They curve nicely to fit your head and are very comfortable to wear. You can't beat the price!
I refuse to pay over $40 AT THE MOST for a hairtoy, and even then, I don't pay that much often. If I can't buy it for under $20, I usually won't buy it. What can I say, I'm cheap. And poor. I think the only items I've paid $40 (or more) are my Ravenscroft Moon and my Ficcare. Everything else I have was between $10 and $20. Pacific Merchantile and Jeterforks get my vote, hands down, for inexpensive but high quality hairtoys.

I love my holly bullet sticks by Grah-toe, and I find them very plain.
They're basically the same as this (http://www.etsy.com/listing/89585370/holly-wood-hair-sticks-bullets-grahtoe). Sadly, Grahtoe isn't making anything right now..

colored wood 5" dpns (http://www.yarn.com/webs-knitting-needles-double-points/knitters-pride-dreamz-double-pointed-needles-5-inch/)
bamboo 5.5" dpns (http://www.yarn.com/webs-knitting-needles-double-points/webs-knitting-needles-colonial-needle-company-bamboo-5-5-double-points/)
I'd probably go with 3mm to 3.5mm dpns if I wanted 'em for hair sticks. Finer wood dpns can be very flexible and not in a good way.
That said, plain is in the eye of the beholder, and I find once these shawl sticks (http://www.yarn.com/webs-knitting-accessories-shawl-pins-embellishments/knitters-pride-shawl-stick/) are in my hair they don't stick out noticeably at all.
These products or comparable ones should be available at most yarn shops, so you don't *have* to order online. And I promise you, yarn is mostly made out of stuff that snags as easily as hair or moreso, so the finish on knitting stuff tends to be pretty decent.

Wow, thanks for the tip on the DPNs! I work quite close to a knitting shop so I'll grab one on Monday. The Quattro fork is also exactly what I was looking for. Thanks, guys!

Another vote for Ketylos. They are well-crafter, the corkscrew shape makes them really secure in your hair and they are highly polished. Can be as plain as you like or beautifully stained.

Totally addicted to Pacific Merchantile sticks here as well! I have one of his forks, too, and it slides in so smoothly, just like the hairsticks!
