Let's see your close-up hair pictures! I am only long enough to photograph the ends, sadly, and this was with much stretching and repositioning and squinting.

What does your hair look like close up, and what texture would you deem it? I call this coarse, though I'm not quite sure it is as coarse as the descriptors, because to me it seems likes it acts pretty coarse/wiry.

Like this dude. Don't bother going into nice swoops and curls, just wrinkle your way along the entire strand. Thanks.

So let's see the pictures!

From my album, taken years ago because I thought it was pretty and needed to be documented. Naked hair, no leave-ins:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=8778&pictureid=115352

I've got everything from fine to thick stranded. And all of it will happily ignore it's neighbors if it pleases.

My hair is short now too, so the zoomiest recent photo I have is my avatar. Still hard to bring it around and photograph the ends. Generous leave-in:

I'm loving this thread! Close-ups of hair is one of my favourite things. :D ejking2, your hair definitely looks like F to me, which confuses me about my own texture. I can never tell whether mine is fine or medium or just a mix of both.

My hair is medium. You can see in the last photo it's thicker than a coarse rug wool fiber and thinner than a toothbrush bristle. Coarse wool is about 40 microns and toothbrush bristles are 130 microns. Fine hair is about 40 microns thick, medium hair is about 60-80 microns, and coarse hair is about 100 microns. Based on the photo above, I guess my hair is about 60 microns.

Brave, your hair looks medium or fine, definitely not coarse. Any hair thickness can be wiry looking, and have that funny kinky look. (especially fine hair can be kinky; because of the fineness it's more prone to damage) I find that if I pull a hair out of my head, it's usually nicely curly, but if I look at a hair that comes out on it's own, it frequently has that funny kinkiness. I assume the shed hair is more damaged (which is why it's shedding).

Ha, that would be weird, eh? :p

My texture is super weird. The top layer (hair that would be up in a half updo) is fine and soft. The rest (down part of the half updo) is noticeably coarser and not so soft. I have a lot of little flyaway strands that make my hair look more damaged than it is. Needless to say, I NEVER wear half up-dos.

I cut into my toothbrush to compare. I'd say my hair is slightly finer than toothbrush fuzz (toothbrush fuzz was more translucent). I initially didn't think my hair was thick enough to be classified as coarse, but I posted a thread here complaining about the way it acted and was told coarseness was behind its roughness.

I think this post (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=7362) does a fairly good job of describing the "feel" of different textures.

Fine hair has the smallest circumference. Fine hair can be so soft and silky that it can actually feel like feathers. Unless it has been chemically altered to damage the cuticle, fine hair reflects light the best of the three textures. When it is healthy, fine hair will often have a natural megawatt shine. Fine hair generally has a much thinner cortex than other hair textures and generally does not contain the inner medulla like other hair textures. Usually only the cortex and cuticle are present in fine hair which adds to it fragility.

Medium hair is the most common type of texture. Medium textured hair is neither super soft nor rough to the touch. Medium hair has lots of body and bounce and usually holds either a blow-dry shape or any type of set very well. It has the most styling flexibility of the three types. Although most medium textured hair usually contains the medulla, cortex and cuticle structural layers, there are exceptions.

Coarse hair has the largest circumference. Coarse hair can feel heavy and rough. Exceptionally coarse hair may feel a little like horse hair to the touch. The outside layers of coarse hair are often overlapped at the scales and raised from the shaft. It holds many styles with ease but can look wild and bushy with the wrong cut or style. It almost always contains three distinct layers known as the medulla, cortex and cuticle.

Wiry Hair which has a very hard, glassy finish as a result of the way that the cuticle scales lie flat against the hair shaft. Wiry hair can also be coarse, medium or fine and usually contains all three structural layers.

I do not have any real way of measuring my hair, but in terms of behavior, it's heavy and rough and bushy. I could still be wrong, but for purposes of knowing how to treat it, I'd say I'd be better off saying it was coarse and treating it that way. Definitely it's a spectrum not a solid divider -- my brother's hair is much, MUCH coarser than mine is -- but if I expected my hair to behave like M or F hair it would be unhappy. For instance, my mother has the same curl pattern I do, down to the uncooperative canopy, but her hair is much finer and behaves much differently and has very different needs.

The kinkyness occurs everywhere, not just in shed hairs. Isn't shedding a result of hair reaching the end of its growth and resting period, rather than mechanical damage?

From that pic, your hair looks coarse, yes. The closest we have to actually measuring our hair microns is to compare them to something with known microns, like toothbrush bristles. :) It's hard to tell from just looking at a lock of hair.

I think my hair is between medium and coarse. The canopy is coarser and the under-layer is a bit finer, lighter in color and softer, but still a bit stiff. Most of my hair feels pretty wiry most of the time.

This article (http://scienceyhairblog.blogspot.com/2012/06/is-your-hair-fine-medium-or-coarse-how.html) has to be the most thorough test of hair coarseness I've come across, at least that is practical for the average person who can't measure in microns (alas!). I haven't done it yet, largely from laziness and also from lacking a measuring stick.

My hair is mainly fine with some medium. Here are the measurements:

Front and sides
0.0015 in = 38microns= Fine

Nape of neck

Below is a great blog post about hair thickness from my favourite hair blogger. I always assumed I had course hair until I read this... and now I know why my hair loves protein from time to time.

Oh, my gracious! What a GORGEOUS color!!! I'm melting with envy!

:o thank you so much! I love my natural color. I always want to dye it, but then Im afraid it wouldnt grow back the same. Ive died it before, but that was years ago. Hehe sometimes I want it lighter too, but I really love where its at. Thank you for the compliment ^.^ makin me blush!

Everyone has such lovely hair! Its so neat to see the individual curly strands, they remind me of slinkies :cheese:

Ill try to get an individual strand shot too! I donno how it'll turn out though.

I'm loving this thread! Close-ups of hair is one of my favourite things. :D ejking2, your hair definitely looks like F to me, which confuses me about my own texture. I can never tell whether mine is fine or medium or just a mix of both.

This was a shed hair that I had to take a picture of - I can't say exactly where the change happened, but the first few inches and the last few inches were drastically different. (The light part is at the root and the dark is the end.)

Do you mean in regard to the weird shed hair that changed colour/texture? I know we have or at least used to have rather hard water here, but not well water, no. And nope, no colour depositing products except one cassia treatment a month or so ago. Most of my shed hairs don't look like that - it's only happened a couple of times, but I find them amusing! :)

Thank you ^_^ how was the health of your hair then? When my hair was unhealthy, I never had the shine or the curl pattern. It was just disgusting, and I thought I'd never have my childhood hair again.

I am not sure why but my hair in the last photos appears redder, I think the camera wasn't able to pick it up right as to me in the sun my hair was dark brown with copper highlights, but the camera seemed to pick up the copper highlights and apply it to all my hair.. Weird..

So I tried taking some close ups of my 4b curls after I'd washed my hair and quickly realized that they can't be captured on the automatic setting of my point and shoot camera. The few that I did manage to capture in focus were pretty cool - they're so tiny it's amazeballs :pinktongue:.

What settings/modes do you all use to take close ups of your hair or really small objects? Any other tips/camera tricks are welcome.

For now, here's a close-up of my braid-out/braidwaves, (not my natural texture). I'll post pics of my coilies once I figure out how to capture them:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97/racheru/Picture006-3.jpg

I'm pretty sure my hair is fine but I could be wrong. Can barely make out the individual flyaway strands unless light is reflecting off of them.

I have what my hairdresser termed extremely fine hair. While it's super soft when it's in good shape, and very silky, I have a very thin braid when I have it long enough to braid. When I get highlights, the people cutting the foil curse because they need a lot more, and have to pull very fine strands out to do, because my hair is SO fine that I probably have 4 times the number of hairs on my head than some other people do. Downside, is that it is very fragile, and again, the thickest ponytail I can get is pretty thin. It's in really bad shape right now, but I haven't cut it, and am hoping that I can get by with just trims for a while until it grows out, no more highlighting...

The first picture is two of my hairs beside a toothbrush piece. It's really hard to take a picture, but I tried to get one of how many hairs twisted together was the same width as the toothbrush and it was 5, eyeballing, 4 or 6 depending on what hair I picked out... some of it is minisculely smaller than the other.. I think!

The second picture is a close up, but sadly, the shadow on the hair is hard to distinguish from the hair itself, so it actually appears double thick, If you can zoom it, you'll be able to see where the shadow comes away. The third and fourth photos are what my hair looks like all together. I have a LOT of hair.... but it's just too fine to make anything spectacular with!

Hi, I thought I might bring this thread back! Lately I am having trouble trying to decide if my hair is F/M, or just F. Actually, my hair is a mix of different textures (and colours!), and my mum always called it "fine", so I did... but watching other people's hair made me rethink about it! I don't have a microscope, so I can't measure microns :p

Yup, Wosie! Ta (and I'm with you on the hearts!)! All but the last pic were about 40 mins before sunset. Apparently my hair gets a real reddy/gold tinge in the sunlight and these pics were very close up, so showed some of its many colours. (Being a tawny, my hair changes with the light.)

I love the little heart clip, too. I'm pretty partial to silver, also. :pinktongue:
