View Full Version : Tracking progress tips or tricks?

Hey everyone, so besides the obvious measuring, I was wondering if you guys do other things to see your growth. I thought maybe braiding a very tiny braid and track my progress like that, but I'm afraid of it turning into a dread-lock. The only other thing I can think of is getting a feather extension to see my growth, but those are pretty pricey at Sally's. Oh, and dyeing is not an option :p

I'm not really into those things - I think it creates too much stress on growth. And the tiny braid seems like it would get snagged.

I think photos are the best way. Wear the same clothes and take it in the same place every week/ftnight or whatever.

Photos are great. Especially if you look at ones from more than three months ago, say. I recently had a look at one from October last year, and was pleasantly surprised to see how much my hair had grown. My hair seems to take such a long time to grow, a common complaint around here I have noticed, but the photos showed that actually I am doing ok.

I take photos mainly and actually have a thread on here which is quite popular, where we all post our monthly photos, it's great fun!

I used to measure but it's getting harder and it's so inaccurate really which can be disheartening, can't really go wrong with a photo unless you tip your head back, which you only really cheat yourself! Get posting your photos and join my. Thread!

What about a bead about an inch from your scalp on your under hair (that reminded me of underwear- I'm so immature :silly:) and you could measure from that. Or some thread wrapped around? I'll get pics of them, un momento.

Ah yes, here we go: something like this, but less obvious and with one or two beads http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl=en&sa=N&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-Address&rlz=1I7TSNO_enUS463&biw=1366&bih=612&tbm=isch&tbnid=VUsEes32QP_dOM:&imgrefurl=http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art52813.asp&docid=OJ9duf8BVtjN_M&imgurl=http://shala.addr.com/bella/tlap/hairbeads.jpg&w=271&h=614&ei=H977T_eIJYTs0gG49-zMBg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=552&vpy=105&dur=1090&hovh=338&hovw=149&tx=75&ty=201&sig=101997961059990467720&page=1&tbnh=121&tbnw=53&start=0&ndsp=29&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0,i:87
And for the thread one: http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl=en&sa=N&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-Address&rlz=1I7TSNO_enUS463&biw=1366&bih=612&tbm=isch&tbnid=SPSJqwURCTHMfM:&imgrefurl=http://www.crochetclouds.com/2011/07/hair-wrap-tutorial.html&docid=Wu2ZJAp87g8muM&imgurl=http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RGbL3ErxyGU/Thomm3Foh6I/AAAAAAAAAvg/9p0LVeMvttY/s1600/6.jpg&w=725&h=556&ei=lN77T__HC8ur0AHBuOXmBg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=570&vpy=269&dur=1498&hovh=197&hovw=256&tx=161&ty=106&sig=101997961059990467720&page=2&tbnh=124&tbnw=162&start=25&ndsp=31&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:25,i:165
But only wrapped a couple of times? Good luck!

I take a photo once a month and try not to think about growth the rest of the time. I generally fail, but I'm better off than I would be if I meassured; I'm sure I'd be tempted to get the meassuring tape out every other day.

Photos are cool. If you took lmfbs's advice, you could also make a time lapse after a few months, which would be pretty cool to see! (Has anyone done this?)

Photos. All the way. They don't always help you know exactly what your growth rate is though, which seems to be what you're getting at. I've seen a tiny wrap with string in a Monistat growth video, but otherwise I really don't know. I'm happier with just having visual proof that it's growing.

I like photos too. I don't take them often. I just looked at a year old length shot and was very pleased with my progress :)

I take photos every three month with the same bra, this way I'm not over analyzing my growth and when I do take the photos you can really see the progress. I have tried to measure but that has not worked out to many margins for error.

You might want to try the striped shirt routine..measure hair growth by where it hits the stripes on the shirt. Just be sure the stripes are a contrasting color so your hair will photograph well against it.

Or striped pants, as the OP's hair looks to be at classic and is longer than most shirts :)

Ok I will be different and be ANTI-photo. I can take 3 photos in the same 5 minutes and look anywhere from MBL to slightly past Classic. A slight head tilt can make it look different. I just saw in the Classic in 2012 thread (you saw it too b/c you commented on it) Kamir0 posted two pics taken a couple minutes apart and her hair looks like 2 inches longer in one than the other.

I, personally, cannot see growth unless I measure. Having straight hair, I don't find it hard or inconsistent at all. I can measure it 5 times in a row and get the exact same measurement every time.

I made marks on the wall of my walk in closet, one at my height of 64.5", then I carefully marked each hallmark length on the wall. Chin, shoulder, APL, BSL, waist, hip (hip is a gray area), tbl (I choose the middle of my tailbone as TBL), classic, FTL, mid thigh (also gray), knee. I stopped at knee I think. I may have marked calf length but I am not really sure where that is on me. Anyway, I made sure I was barefoot, of course. All I have to do is back up to the wall, find the bottom of my hair with my hands and poke the wall, back away and look. This method will fail to work past FTL though! And not everyone is willing to write on their walls. We designed/built our house (literally) and I MADE that wall, painted it, own it...I feel no worries in writing on it! I can always have DH look.

I also measure my roots from time to time as I can still see my demarcation line from sun-in almost two years ago.

This is pretty much exactly what I was looking for. I'm really more interested in seeing the progress of my roots, so thank you! :D

Yes, I would need striped pants lol (I got my first "classic" comment! :cheese:)

The LHC might be a market for those early 20th century striped knee-length "swimming costumes" like this (http://www.gallimauphry.com/blog/union_suita.jpg), just for keeping track of hair growth!

LOL! Oh my gosh! That's too funny. For those who are knee and beyond they would need those full body pj's that kids wear with the slots for the feet! :D

They can just use striped knee socks ;)
