I keep hearing good things about horn combs on this forum. Now I wish to purchase one for myself. Does anyone have advice on a good maker for a (detangling, not ornamental/style-holding) horn comb? I am probably going to purchase through Amazon (USA), and I would like it to not be too expensive. I worry about getting one sight-unseen and finding out that it is poorly finished and snags hair like crazy.

Oh my, her pieces are lovely! And the prices are MUCH lower than I would have expected. Tempting!

I wish I remembered what maker mine is! I bought it at the mall, it's from Inner Mongolia. It's beautiful and I love it! It's wood and horn mix with beautiful Mongolian script on the handle.

ETA: I think it might have been Moghant. They're online and also on Ebay but I don't see any combs like mine.

ETA 2: Yep! Definitely Moghant. The comb is very high quality! They have many truly beautiful ones (I saw many of them in person, they were all beautiful, but I picked the one I like. The style I have doesn't seem to be available online but there are a couple similar ones there with the horn/wood combo.)

I had one that I got from Amazon.uk, but I dropped it on the floor and half of the teeth fel out. :-( Now I can't find any designs I like anywhere. Most of the ones on Amazon (.com and .uk) right now are half horn, half wood.

Ooh, I just saw some lovely Moghant combs online, I feel the urge to buy one coming on, must restrain myself, have already bought a present for my hair this week, a Titanic butterfly comb!

I really like the design of a lot of horn combs, but I feel like most of them do not space the teeth widely enough. The combs I have from hairsense are perfectly spaced. If I could just find a horn comb with teeth like that, I would be happy. :)

Of course, the hairsense ones are wonderful, and I feel like they are more durable than the horn ones. The last horn comb I had shattered when I accidentally dropped it. And it was only dropped about 3' onto a carpet.

For those of you eyeing the Moghant combs, as far as I can tell mine is excellent quality. Of course I bought in person so had pick of the litter, but they're gorgeous combs.

Are the Moghant combs polished between the teeth? It's hard to tell from the pictures whether they are rough between the teeth or not. Most horn combs I've seen appear to be smooth on the surfaces only. Man, I hate buying stuff online.

Mine isn't polished between the teeth but it's not rough either. It has texture. Nothing that would snag though.

I'll see if I can get pictures.

I bought 2 from Tibet Road on Ebay and LOVE them! The yak horn really does seem sturdier than ox or cow horn. http://stores.ebay.com/Tibet-Road?_trksid=p4340.l2563

I've had this comb since March? Of this year and it sees almost daily use on wet hair. It's also been packed on a few trips with me and so far, nothing bad has happened to it. So while I wouldn't recommend dropping it (I'm very careful with mine) it appears to hold up well.

The first few times I used it in wet hair there was a smell. Nothing absolutely atrocious, but it was noticeable. That doesn't happen anymore though. The handle is made from some sort of wood that smells really good. Like sandalwood, but the paper that came with it (that I no longer have) says it's something else.

Thanks a lot Kaelee! That's very helpful:) I just ordered one of those bakelite combs from Hairsense though, as I was completely unable to decide on which horn comb I wanted. Oh well. Maybe next time.

I have this one and love it.

I've been using it on wet hair without problems for a year and a half.

I just ordered a Quecraft comb and hairsticks! I am so excited. This will be my first pair of hairsticks as well.

Thank you, everyone, for your advice!
