Oh no Bat those kinds of nightmares are the worst :( I get lice nightmares relatively often, I get so paranoid I have to check every piece of dandruff I pull out of my hair for the next week!!!

There's a hair dreams and nightmares thread somewhere around here...

yeah there is i was too lazy to find it, I almost had thoughts of shaving it all off and starting again with no dye, but I've done that many times and failed within a week, and my deam must have been my mind telling me no, so I won't do it, growing out half my head will be enough struggles


Just for the record, how do we define "chin"? If I pull down my bangs in front, the ends just barely reach the bottom of my chin on one side but not on the other (I guess the hairdresser decided to go asymmetrical in my last haircut?) Does that count? At what point do you call the milestone?

i'm unsure of this too but I think its when your longest side curls under your jaw i guess?not too sure either, even now I feel I'm not past chin but I'm pretty sure I am though i almost felt like not saying it is chin it hits the bottom of my neck

I’ve decided to call it and consider myself graduated into this thread. I have a photo showing my hair clearly reaching my chin when stretched out, so I think it’s “chin length”. According to my handy dandy spreadsheet, I should be in this thread until February of next year, though I have a long neck, so it may take longer than that.

This will be my second time growing down it in very recent times too, I got my longest layers to the bottom of my neck before my trim to get rid of the rest of my layers. I'm not too upset about that though, I like my hair a lot better now :p

been using castor hot oil treatment with peppermint a few times I'm wondering if that may actually have helped.

Yay! My goal for the end of the year is to get past my shirt neckline, seems I might get there sooner than I thought, if it doesn't stall that is xD

Definitely! It's so much better now because it looks intentional, no longer like I'm growing out a buzz cut.
I sure hope this will be the last time I ever had to do that, it's such a pain! :rolling:
I think it's just smooth growing from here on out. I'm not in a rush anymore since I can enjoy my hair as it is.

getting past chin and having everything even just seems to take forever, I have bits at eye length, some part mid cheek and the rest is half way down my neck, this time next year I think I should be close to having it all even (excluding the side shave I got that I am now regretting)

I think around waist length. But yeah, getting everything even will take me till March at least. But you really have it worse than I have, don't you? My shortest parts are around cheek length and my longest are, well, what you see hanging loose in the picture :rolling:

Thank you! I use to dye my hair, and loved it! But it took me a couple of tries and a lot of time to grow it out... so it would take some heavy thinking before I dyed again. I think the colour you see is partly due to the lighting on the day and a little bit of sun bleaching.

I am not a fan of curls so I'll be keeping them at bay when I can, I've had straight hair all my life so I'm finding it upsetting, it almost makes me want to keep it short. But I'm hoping it is mostly bleach damage and it will get straighter as it grows out

I spent most of my life thinking that I had straight to slightly wavy hair. What I thought was annoying big hair was actually curls trying to break through. I wasn't a fan, so I learnt some ways to straighten my hair. In order of effectiveness...

I would dry my hair in an up-do but move the up-do higher and lower on my head as it dried so there wouldn't be a definite pattern. A ponytail (https://www.cosmo.ph/beauty/hair/chic-hairstyles-perfect-for-the-lazy-girl) tuck works well if I was going out. Or if I was drying at home... a pony tale at the nape with hair ties down the length to keep it dead straight... again repositioning the ties while its drying can help prevent any dents etc.

Silicons, if you use them, can weight down waves and curls.

Brushing/combing my hair every now and again while its drying.

You'll see. I've got surprised finding out only a year ago that my hair is slight wavy. I believed it was just frizzy 1a until I've done texture test ( leaving it to dry without combing). Did you try to do that, too? And how does it behave if you try to scrunch your hair? Is it frizzy on humid weather?

yep I did, my photo is in the hair typing topic and most said 2a, my hair has got some frizzy flyaways but it is bleach damage I think, I used to be a 1b a few years ago, I haven't tried to scrunch it since I don't want to encourage curls

For me, bleach damage loosened the pattern instead, and it is my understanding that's the common experience... so that may be false hope. :/ But you should be able to blowdry it straight (on low temperature to make it less damaging), have you ever tried that? Add some fixating product and it could stay straight for quite a while. When your hair is long enough, you can even experiment with some heatless straightening methods. Subtle waves should be easy enough to subdue, and you can learn to treat them well so you can wear it wavier or straighter depending on your mood! :) It could be a fun way to add variety since the growing process itself can get a bit tedious. Personally I always liked long dark wavy hair with gothic aesthetic so I bet you could make some fun looks with that, and keep it straight the rest of the time. So many options!

that's depressing! I wanted to be lazy not not have to put effort into making it straight!, wavy hair and curls look great on other people like yourself. I'm sure I'll eventually get used to the change in texture, it was just a bit of a shock for me

Funny, people say opposite, but I also had impression that the frizzines became prominent due to highlights in my case. It seemed that new virgin hair was much straighter but pity I didn't have patience to let my hair grow and to see what would've happened when it's longer.
This length ( CL, neck, SL) is too short for identifying types around 1c because hair can appear as completely straight, (or straight that flips just a bit), before it reach jaw/chin length. That was my case every time I had shorter then CL.
Btw, what instantly made my frizzy ends to look straighter is olive oil treatment from time to time.

I completely agree. Without photo evidence it might be hard to convince people of my hair type. From shoulder length it could go either way... straighter cos there is more length and weight, or wavier because there is more hair for the curl pattern to develop.

I completely agree. Without photo evidence it might be hard to convince people of my hair type. From shoulder length it could go either way... straighter cos there is more length and weight, or wavier because there is more hair for the curl pattern to develop.

Yes. I'm in the second group I guess. And what I also realise is, layered hair of that type doesn't fall nicely if the top layers are too short. I've learned that, while having layers at ear length on APL length. They weren't evenly wavy/straight. My hair is most wavy on the front and side, but the bangs are somehow straighter. The parts behind are also quite straight.

When its at between CL and shoulder it gets one annoying wave at the end. Past shoulder it gets heavy enough to sit in the 1 category.

I have to really work to get those curls in my siggy: scrunching when hair is wet and gel.

I think it was the combing while wet and dump bunning. I also would move the position of the bun so that I wouldn't have a clear bun pattern. Maybe also the lack of layers? My hair was all one length in the above pic.

Here is another couple of pics from 2019. I wasnt following LHC methods as closely... still using coconut oil, changed to sulfates, cones, but now heat straightening once or twice a month.

(I'm not a fan of the haircut. My hairdresser gave me the length I wanted but obviously wanted to keep me mostly around SL/APL). The first photo is combed wet and air dried. I think the photo shows that layers seemed to help bring out some of the wave and curl pattern.

Yeah especially when I consider my bangs were nose length in April and now they're chin+! That's a little over the expected 2 inches of growth for 4 months I think.

People have said that my hair seems to grow fast, but my measurements say something else. Especially when finding out that some lucky people can grow 1 inch per month!! I'd be beyond BSL in a year at that rate.

But, my diet and lifestyle is very different from ~2010 when I last determined my 0.5 inch per month growth. Plus I'm much older :eek:. So maybe its going to be different??

Yes, you are most definitely more towards the 3s than me. I only have a handful of waves that actually turn into ringlets. At this length, I've now stopped trying to scrunch and gel them into existence... its just not going to happen. I'll save my product until I'm heading towards APL again.

I'm excited, I've shifted my appointment for a trim to remove the inverted shape from October to mid Dec. This will set me up for the no trimming challenge in 2021 and also means less cutting/trimming over the rest of 2020.

Also, Ive just started on a new hair skin and nails supplement that has a higher dose of silica relative to what I was taking. In this study (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17960402/) they talk about (10mg/day) silica/silicon increasing the strength and thickness of thin hair over the 9 month study. Because they had thin hair to start with, it may mean it would not have much effect for someone with thicker/stronger hair. But it might! Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

But, I also take hair skin and nails for my skin too, because I'm prone to a bit of acne and it helps to heal it up quickly. If it makes my hair stronger that's an added bonus.

I've been having the exact same problem. My hair constantly wants to obstruct my vision! So I use one or two mini claw clips to get my "bangs" out of the way.

most of the time for me(especially like today as it was morning wash day), it with a simple bandanna-based headband. Besides hiding the freaky not-long enough layers over the ears, if I put it on when still wet, it tends to smooth the 'lumpy' waves down a lot.

Originally I was tucking both the top and bottom(relative to the headband) in under it, but sometimes I let some of the top sections over the outside. Kindof 80ish, but it softens the look and is a change from the more severe look of everything shoved under it.

A little change is always good, right. Still avoiding a trim, and actually avoiding all pictures,etc.... right now as it either doesn't seem important, or probably more accurately, allows me to avoid thinking about this awkward phase. Seems to be growing slowly now, but probably just impatient. Also, still hoping for most, if not all to be in a regular ponytail by the end of the year. Keep fingers crossed all.

I've been fond of rope braids lately. I'll rope braid just my bangs out of my face (with a lace braid) and leave the rest down, or do french rope braids (with varying degrees of success), etc. I find it keeps the short layers contained better than other braids. I've also done a lot of half ponytails since my hair is too short to get it all in a ponytail right now.

I'm really wondering if I should partially graduate from this thread. the longest layers are definitely shoulder length while the shoutest are barely longer than chin. I'm letting the shorter ones catch up with the longer ones and that's going to take at least another six months or so.

I trimmed due to this exact dilemma lol :p If you plan on keeping your layers forever, I'd say graduate! If you're working with layered hair you call milestones based on whenever your longest layers get to it, in my opinion.

I don't plan any haircut but I'll keep the back at the same length it is now so that the other layers can slowly grow to the same length. It will take another six months until everything is at the same length but I din't want to sacrifice the length I have already.

Personally I go by the longest layer.

In my 2019 siggy pic I have heavily layered hair. Most of the length is between SL and APL, there are pictures on my page with it straightened showing how layered it really was. I was definitely not calling that SL.

Styling this length is getting more annoying by the day :mad: It feels like overnight a few of the bottom layers got long enough to put in my go-to half ponytail, but of course not all of them, so now it (IMO) looks less intentional and more messy. So I switched to low ponys, which my top layers are too short for, so I have to get creative with those... It's doable of course but frustrating. I just want to be able to fit all my hair in a ponytail, haha.

Only went back a couple pages here, but for all the photo posters....not only nice length gain, but you all seem to have great looking hair period...totally healthy, and a good bit of attitude(i.e. curl, wurl, or other...lol)

after my morning wash, it feels/looks like the racers are getting within an inch of the shoulders....but the sides of a typical guy cut requires so much more growth to get even close.

I just don't have enough hands/arm length to take a pic, aim, and reach back to hold my ends down. when I tried to take pics hands off the camera, I just couldn't get a good shot at all, much less when holding everything in place. unstretched, the back just sucks back into itself right at about ear length....sigh..... will have to give picture taking some more thought...

Are you taking pictures on a smart phone? If so, does it have a timer option? I recently discovered that my phone has this option and it's been a lifesaver for taking length shots, just prop it up on a bookshelf, set the timer and pose! If you're using an actual camera to take photos, that might also have a timer function.

For me a timer is also a must! Not only do I use a timer, but I also use the 3 shot function. That way I can move a little between each shot and then choose my fav. I have these functions on all my cameras- phone, DSLR, basic handheld.

I know exactly how you feel. I can kinda sorta get my hair in a ponytail if I clip in the front parts separately, but it looks ridiculous and doesn't stay very long. I can't wait till it actually feels secure.

Long neck buddies!!! I'm not tall myself but I do have weird anatomy, I have the torso of a 6' tall person on a 5'3'' body. Seriously! I sit next to people much taller than me and suddenly we're the same height :rolling:

I always thought it was a protein treatment. But after doing some research it might not be. It seems the active ingredient is Inositol- a sugar. Its in my hair skin and nails supplement too. Over on the fermented rice water thread a member mentioned that her hair doesn't like protein but likes rice water.

Yeah- its nice to measure that way. But I really do envy the shorter milestones! No mater the cm length, SL hair looks like SL hair.


Really trying not to focus too much on my hair lately. It's such an annoying length, can't do any updos except half-ups, and it's been so ungodly hot.
It looks really good though, still don't regret my major trim. Really dying to be able to do a basic ponytail without half my hair falling out though. By that time it'll be ungodly cold!!!

Im always in half ups. Except for the other day when I was wearing a cap (dont like to tan my face and Brisbane sun is STRONG)I was able to do a little stubby low pony. The cap kept all the short layers back. I kept touching the stubby tail... felt kinda like the end of a paint brush :D

Post rice water rinse waves! I love this protein treatment. Especially because I have access to so much rice water because I eat so much rice. Yesterday my hair was sitting firmly in the 1 category. But, these waves will fall out over the next couple of days unless I spritz them with water.

I came across rice water rinses when researching the curly girl method. Some use it to help give their curls strength, and recommend it if your curls/waves are falling flat quickly.

I really like it as a treatment. While it doesn't give me rock solid waves, it definitely makes my hair soft. So I don't think it could hurt to try.

It got pretty thin through there a couple of years back when I had a major career change / stress. Anywho, this is the area that feels most irritated with oil or to much conditioner.

I still flake but I'm also on pretty strong medication my transition made my skin get super oily so had to go on stuff to dry me out

Actually I don't think it'll be that much longer for you. It's gonna be another 3 to 6 months approximately which, in growth terms, is nothing. I don't know how fast your hair grows but it won't be too far off.

I missed that crown was mentioned as the start measuring point. Its so arbitrary and could shift depending on where you call crown on any given day.

41cm from crown would have me around if not past BSL.

Thank you so much! As I mentioned in the comment above, I actually measured my hair from the hairline at the front, above the head and down to the ends. I think that if you measure like this it will give you a bigger number :). And I know that a different number doesn’t change the way our hair looks, but you can pick the middle of your hairline at the front and get more consistent results than if you pick the crown of the head.

The best thing I did for my hair was to buy hair scissors and cut it myself (the hairdresser I went to cuts hair very nice, meticulously, but she always cut way more than I was comfortable with). In time I kind of evened out the hemline, though the very front pieces of my hair are shorter and they look odd if I don’t put them behind my ears. It was also hard to put those pieces in a ponytail. So you should rock your inverted hairstyle before reaching shoulder, it looks really good at this length :).

I will! Its such a mild invert... I actually wanted it more inverted. I'm liking it though! Like you said it looks good at this length. Once its long again I won't get to enjoy this shape.

Yes, it's so true! A month ago I thought I'll reach shoulder length at the end of the year, but I actually reached it now, at the start of September. I was probably confusing shoulder length with collarbone length.

I do think your hair is SL now or you'll reach it relatively quick (I just saw your other photo). You'll soon graduate this thread :).

Makes me wonder if a 'full' ponytail by Christmas is still doable. Feel like the shedding is getting worse....sigh

For me, what I love about flip length is that for a while it doesn't look like its growing. The flip eats up the length. The flip gets bigger and bigger and then... bam! It reaches a length where it doesnt flip anymore and it suddenly seems inches longer.

Today I just want to wear my hair up! Its been ages since I wanted it slicked back and off my face. So I'm currently wearing a headband to hold back my fringe and I have a short pony held with a velvet scrunchy... I feel scrunchies seem to grip onto more hair. And I feel free!

I agree with Kathie, taking monthly pictures is surely needed. Before taking pictures I thought that my hair didn’t grow at all, but looking back, I see that’s not the case. I think you may be in a similar situation.

I am sorry about your shedding. Don’t be so hard on yourself, in times of stress our hair is the first one affected. It’s not your fault and you’re already doing enough for your hair - like the deep conditioning treatment :).

Today I just want to wear my hair up! Its been ages since I wanted it slicked back and off my face. So I'm currently wearing a headband to hold back my fringe and I have a short pony held with a velvet scrunchy... I feel scrunchies seem to grip onto more hair. And I feel free!

I think I look better with my hair down... but today its more about how I feel than how I look.

Absolutely, these are wise words. A high bun suits me best. I have a little face, so with my hair just slicked back into a low pony there not much going on. A high bun makes a difference... there is more visual interest.

My hair is also touching my shoulders now. It's now at that length when it turns upwards from touching my shoulders if I don't brush it when it's wet. It's going to look funny for a couple of months, but at least it's growing :laugh:.

Today I put my hair in a ponystub to keep my hair out of my way in the shower, but alas, it got wet anyway. Made me miss when my hair was so long I could put it on top of my head and keep it relatively dry with no shower cap in the shower.

I appreciate what you are saying...except for the fact that I am 90+ percent sure it isn't growing much right now. and...having guessed that a few months ago(since I do know how much stress and bad diet,etc....can affect growth), I'm pretty sure that seeing regular monthly pics showing nothing is worse than my 'benign neglect' method.

However, I think I know the root of the problem...and that is my diet. You can't completely ignore stress,etc... and my washing and conditioning habits have been fairly consistent(except for overnight stuff...which could make a difference). But...I changed my diet a couple weeks ago(for the better) to combat high Blood Pressure, but until this week, I hadn't realized how poor my diet has been with regards to proper amounts/proportions of truly healthy, vitamin enriched foods....primarily good green veggies that I have been ignoring. So....tonight I am eating nothing but (ok...I microwaved it..) fresh organic broccoli and have bought a good sized bottle of a decent multi-vitamin.

I do need to do an ACV rinse, as I'm not impressed with the look of it all compared to earlier, and need a bit more sleep as well.

Despite thinking I'm shedding more than normal, I do have fairly thick hair, so I don't see or feel any retreat of length and hopefully (with all your good thoughts) can get back to a healthier diet/life, and growth rate.

The box said petrol black but the image looked dark brown... And the Color was a level 3-45 which isn't black to my knowledge, it does look nice though, it got rid of the green which is a plus

Bat, sometimes hairdyes can dye your hair darker because of your hair porosity. Higher porosity, darker color. But it should fade. Anyway, 3 is a very dark color. The difference with "1" black I think is more the intensity of the black. 1 unnatural black, 3 natural black, with some brown shade under some lights.

Yeah I ended up getting a Color that looked brown by the model but was blue black, it is nice though do I'll stick with black for now

Today I enjoyed wearing a circle shaped fabric head band. Not only did it hold my fringe back, but it also held up some of the shorter layers at the back. So I was able to wear my hair in a higher ponytail. A higher ponytail is a longer ponytail.

Why haven’t I thought of this before? It’s such a good idea to put a little clip under. And your hair has a lot of thickness, it makes such a nice ponytail :).

After it grows a bit longer you can always remain at a comfortable hair length and trim until you get rid of layers. You still have time to decide whatever option fits you best :)
