Seems I'm mid neck length again! Still can't tie my hair up but I call this half way to shoulder stage here's to reaching bottom of neck by the end of feb

The second photo was from October and I had a couple trims to rid me of some layers (, basically still the same layers lol)

I sort of Frankensteined some of my hair into a top knot! It looks ok from the front, but ridiculous from the back where a gazillion little clips were required, so I don't think I'll be wearing this in public (maybe on zoom??!). It made me happy, though, cos I used to love wearing my hair up an high on my head back when it was longer... looking forward to being able to do this for real!
That looks so cute from the front! I'm envious of how big your top knot is. I can't see the back well enough (and it doesn't look too crazy from what I can see?), but did you try French braiding it? I'm not talented enough to do that but I feel like it should work....

The layer trimming stage seems to take *forever*. I'm finally past it now but saw a picture of me from back in the summer where my hair looks just as long as it does now! So frustrating. You're doing the no-trim if I recall correctly, so are you going to embrace the layers from here? Looks like you have plenty of thickness to do so! I felt like I had to wait for everything to catch up so I didn't have scraggly ends from the beginning....

I have a surprising amount of hair, my last hair cut the hairdresser took a fair bit of the bulk out of it. I'm thinking I might have low end iii thickness, won't know for a while now since I have to let the bulk full out so I can do an ponytail circumference test.
I'm doing no Trims this year if I can stick it out, I'm possibly going to let it grow to APL with no trims then I might maintain until my side shave catches up I'll see how it looks when it's that long, if I let it grow and stop doing stupid things to it. XD

Can confirm that French braiding up the back works, I do that sometimes for topknots and high ponytails :) it’s tricky to get right though.

I saw your adorable Dutch braids in the other thread. You're clearly a much more talented braider than I am so if you say it's tricky then it must be almost impossible!

January 14th, 2021, 11:28 AM
No no, not almost impossible! It definitely helps to be confident in your braiding skills (and at this point I am, I am very stubborn and have been practicing basically since the day I decided to grow my hair). Hair tends to resist being braided in that direction so you have to take your time with it.
An alternate trick I learned from a tiktok is to make a series of little ponytails up the back of your head if that makes sense. This would probably work with those teeny tiny claw clips if you want to avoid using those mini hair ties.

DropStiches This looks awesome! I did some similar deceptive hairstyles for zoom last fall. It worked surprisingly well.
xanthochromia, I love your twist with the pen! Can't wait until I can do that and it holds.
Congrats on being mid neck length again Bat! It seems like your hair grows so quickly!
I managed to wrestle my hair into a sad little french braid on Jan 5, which feels like a month ago now! I was surprised to see on the date that it was that recent. I feel like my hair has gained another length milestone in that it was feeling longer for a while and now it seems so short. Does that happen to anyone else? I have noticed when growing out my hair that I don't see it as really short until its longer and then I realize how short it really is. I don't know.. kind of weird.
My hair now is just about shoulder length in front as well, and the bangs I cut are laying so much better now. I have been really happy with my hair lately. I remember reading that you should wait at least 2 weeks to see if you like a hair cut and I think that is really true. I am going to remember that from now on.

I don't think that's a "sad little braid" at all! But in my braid practicing I've noticed that Dutch braids look fuller on me than French. You could tuck the ends under, too, for mystery-length hair!
I'm sure you could hold your hair with a pen for the 30 seconds or so to take a picture, which is all mine managed, especially because yours is longer than mine and more textured. Congrats on being almost shoulder!

How much was removed in your recent haircut? Were more layers cut in to help the curls?
In your honor, I did and then actually slept in a braid last night (for the first time in my life!). I had been doing braid practice instead where I just do a braid and immediately take it out again because it's so messy. So this morning, ta da! Braid waves! They seem much more dramatic in real life than they look in this picture, perhaps because I'm used to having no texture at all....

I tried a scalp scrub on the recommendation of a friend (and ordered in sort of an impulse buy) and nooooo thank you. My shed that wash looked like it was 3 times more than usual. I don't have nearly enough hair to spare for that kind of loss.
What was in it? I'm not a scalp scrubber (I have a bad habit of scratching my scalp so it doesn't need exfoliating), but I've heard that a scalp scrub can encourage hairs to shed that were already on their way out. Don't quote me on that. I tend to lose hairs whenever I mess with my scalp, but it's very dense. I've had this habit my whole life, and I sorta suspect that regular exfoliation may be good for follicles.
Seconding LadyStardust. I'm not saying that there isn't a person whose scalp wouldn't actually dislike having stuff put on it, but I'll pretty confidently claim that in most cases, the greater shedding is purely a case of ready-to-shed hairs coming out a couple of days early. When I do a scalp scrub or otherwise massage my scalp, I lose much more hair that time, but less than average the next couple of washes. Such is normal and nothing to be worried about. If your scalp feels good about the scrub otherwise, I don't see a reason to quit doing them. For me personally, it feels like my scalp can take a deep breath of fresh air, so scrubs will probably be a staple in my routine.
Time to go to sleep before I actually do something stupid

Also, I discovered this amazing mousse that works so well for my hair. I used to kind of think all hair products were kind of the same but this mousse is amazing! I just scrunch it in and it defines my waves like a gel but without the crunchy greasiness of gel. I really like it and I feel like my hair is finally a good length to wear wavy again. It's creamy mousse locking coconut curls by OGX if anyone is curious. :) Im sure its not curly girl friendly but I don't do curly girl religiously.

I've always liked pin straight hair too xD but alas I think I'm probably going to be a 2a, I'm pretty sad about that lol, I used to be 1b before my transition + greys, oh well!
If your hair turns out 2a, it could actually be very easy to straighten without heat.
If I comb mine while it is still damp, it looks 1b when dry. I don't even have to put a lot of effort, a wide-toothed comb does the job :)
Also there are some "hair wrapping" techniques that work a bit like heatless curls to give you straight hair overnight.

I'm dipping my toes in here (again!) Hi all 🙂 I am mid neck length at the moment after getting to almost waist last year. The frizz and damage was too much for me to cope with, alongside it being summer and just far too hot for me to deal with (Aussie here!) I did the cut and don't regret it at all. I've been going shorter and shorter since my big cut but think I will let it be for a while now. I got a keratin treatment 2 weeks ago which has helped with the humidity frizz immensely, so happy to grow again and see what happens.

If you ever decide you want black hair forever, henna+indigo might straighten a bit? I don't actually know if that's true but henna definitely straightens. I'm hoping mine gets even straighter after my next henna. It'll be my strongest henna to date, so it should have an effect I think.
Yeah straight hair is pretty awesome, but after having mine straightened I realized I look a little better with wavy hair, since it gives it more volume and I think it just looks better with my features.

I feel you! I don't do well when it gets to be over 95 degrees, but also don't like it under 60. Humidity, on the other hand, is just about my favorite thing ever. Just moved to the south and it's been 90%+ humidity and I'm in love.

While I do like black and always seem to go back to it Hendigo would be the worst thing I could get, I'd ruin my hair trying to get it out if I changed my mind, plus I'm not a big fan of trying to get the stuff to go as black as I want it.

A lot else about life (on both a global and a personal level) feels so uncertain at the moment, I’ve come to be really thankful for the simple and inevitable biological process of my hair growing out of my head - and for the nice little community of people on here who I can talk about it with!

Pretty good, ready to have more length though. I miss being able to put my hair up. Not sure I will grow super long(to waist) my goal this time is quality not quantity. I am doing no trim for this year to get to APL and then I will assess and probably start microtrimming on a regular basis to keep my hair in good condition. It seems good up to APL and then it needs help. How about you?

Yes! I think its great to at least see what long hair is like. I had short hair most of my life too before I grew it out in my mid-thirties for the first time since I was 14. And it was the first time I had been able to do it. Since then I have bounced back and forth but I'm glad I was able to check it out, and I think you will be glad you checked it out too. :)

Maybe there's a level of personal preference here, of what 'feels' like shoulder to you? My shoulders are quite slopey, so a lot of shoulderiness is actually below my collarbones... I'm inclined to wait and call it a bit later, as it seems like such a long expanse from shoulder to APL, I'm not in a rush to embark on that.

You guys are making me want to grow out my hair again! My goal is shoulder length :) I haven't worn any ponytails and buns in almost a year and I want to do that again! My hair is a little bit past chin length. I also want to grow out my straight bangs into curtain bangs. I'll probably cut it short again at some point to be honest, short hair suits me.
Did anyone ever grow out an undercut before? I have a (grown out 3/4 cm long) triangle undercut to take out some thickness. It is easy to cover up when my hair is down but my goal is to wear my hair in ponytails/buns again.
My current plan: Stop heat styling almost every day (those videos I shared should help me with that :)) and heat style only when I want to put a little more time and effort in my appearance. Continue washing every other day and using the same cheap products because so far they work well. Get a hair cut at some point to get my grown out undercut at approximately the same length as my hair. When I had long hair I used rinse out oil and LOC, I also stopped using silicones. If my hair gets dry I will try those methods again but I don't think I'll need that with this length.

Just checking in and trying to get some inspiration and motivation since I have been lacking lately. My goal just seems so far away and it is disheartening. :( Especially since I am growing out a side shave. that means my goal is even further away as I wait for that hair to catch up.
Anyway, I am hovering just above shoulder. My side shaved bit is about 2.5 inches long. It's gonna be a while and I am just feeling so angry at myself for cutting it in the first place. I was almost to BSL before I decided to cut the side shave, and then eventually cut the rest into a bob. I don't know what I was thinking.

Don’t be so hard on yourself, shutterpillar! I mean, I’ve definitely had those same feelings myself - but I think we could all do with being kinder to ourselves - after all, we can’t bully our hair into growing any faster! It sounds like it won’t be too much longer before you can clip your side shaved bit back and blend it in with the rest of your hair as it grows. Plus if you hadn’t done it, you might always have been curious! Wishing you luck on your journey - if it makes you feel any better, I feel jealous of your ‘Near Shoulder’ status - that sounds very long to me (just past chin) right now!

I think a side shave is very cool and edgy. You tried a different style, don't be angry about that! Set mini goals, for example you can probably already put it behind your ear! Maybe there is a hairstyle that you want to do when your side shave is a few inches longer and you can work towards that.

That does make it difficult, some people also call Shoulder when no part of their neck is visible, I'm thinking of not even using shoulder as a milestone there's maybe 1.5 ish inches between shoulder and cbl on me

Thank you, everyone, for the kind replies. I'm having a bit of a down day in general and chose my hair to take it out on. It certainly isn't deserving of that talk as it is healthy and shiny in it's short state. It'll get there eventually, it just seems so far off.
I missed the question about calling shoulder and when to do that. On my frame, shoulder and collarbone are essentially the same place. There is very little difference between them, which is why I will probably just call shoulder when it hits the top of my shoulders and forget CBL altogether lol. Shoulder to APL will be my next large gap.

You are in good company here. I think most of us at one point had a side shave or undercut. I've just gotten to a bob after my undercut, and at one point had like 4/5ths of my head shaved. It took a while to get here but I don't regret it, because it was something I just HAD to get out of my system. I still think undercuts and side shaves look awesome, but at this point I'd rather just have a full head of hair.
Please don't regret it and beat yourself up about doing it - if you never shaved it in the first place, maybe you would still be thinking about shaving it! I remember looking at so many pictures all the time, thinking "man I really want to try this". If anything, just doing it and experiencing it saved me all the time I spent on Google Images looking at other people's haircuts. Your hair will be long before you know it, and it's awesome that you tried something daring like that!

I'm planning on staying in this thread until CBL too! That feels more like shoulder on my body than just grazing the tops of my trapezius muscles. I also had a side shave once-upon-a-time, but this time was growing out from a standard pixie. I have done many of the pixie-to-bob-and-back transitions, but this is my first time since childhood growing out past my chin. I expect to hit CBL sometime this spring, but we'll see if my hair agrees!
Regardless, shutterpillar, I agree with LadyStardust that now you have it out of your system and that's worth a lot. This whole hair growth process is an exercise in patience and acceptance, and it isn't easy! Mine was much less drastic, but I cut off 2 inches the week before I first used a BBB and then saw a video on long, fine/thin hair that made me decide to grow mine out. I was pretty frustrated with the timing, but it is what it is and maybe it's good that I got that last short haircut out of the way. I hope you feel better about it as it continues to grow!

Hi Shutterpillar! I know it's easy to regret hair decisions, but like others are saying I think it can be good to check it out and see if its something you like and get it out of your system. Now you know what its like to have one and can make better more informed hair decisions in the future whatever they may be. And growing out can be fun! Its like a whole new journey you go on and if you come on this board and these threads you get new companions along the way. :)
I think I am just at shoulder. I haven't decided if I will move to the shoulder to APL thread in February or not. Wet my hair definitely comes to CBL and stretched but not dry and wavy. That would probably be in another two months. Im going to see where I am at after my length pic for February.

Welcome! It seems like the shag/mullet look suits certain people and hair types a lot more than others. I also kept trimming the bottom to let my short pixie pieces catch up with the rest and now my hair is basically all one length except for blunt bangs that I'm keeping. I think my very straight hair looks pretty good in a bob and I knew I wanted to end up with blunt ends rather than layers. The only problem is feeling like you haven't made a lot of progress, but that was worth it for me! Good luck with your growing-but-also-maintaining phase! :)

Welcome, Mermaeden! This was also my approach to growing out from short - some people can really rock a mullet, but on me it just looked frumpy and unfortunate. I’d rather take a little bit longer to get where I’m going, but be happier along the way! Do you have an eventual length goal?

Hi everyone. Old lurker but new poster here. My story: When I was in my Tolkien phase, my hair was able to grow to around classic length with zero trims but I did protective styles and head massages.
I had random cuts, dyes and bleaches years after and wasn't able to grow it to classic length again. It was in a pony tail all the time so no protective styles either. I have extremely fine hair but quite a bit of it. I think I'm a 1b/F/ii.
Last summer in June, I did a big fat chop because I gave up on my hair and decided to try something new. Lo and behold, I want long hair again only a few months after.
Ever since then, I've been consistent with scalp massages everyday, EO, eating healthy, taking my biotin and trying to put it in protective buns as much as my very short hair can do.
My progress so far. (https://scontent-bos3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/141333824_1711873328987426_7512082636378523673_n.j pg?_nc_cat=103&ccb=2&_nc_sid=8bfeb9&_nc_ohc=azecA2V01osAX8TH427&_nc_ht=scontent-bos3-1.xx&oh=3d1d6d557b3e2e0eaab27017e0e5e3ce&oe=6037773F)
What updos can you manage, if any?
My hair is on the fine side so putting it up in a high ponytail with almost all of my hair is relatively easy. But I'm staying away from ponytails like the plague now. I use those soft scrunchies you can get at CVS to do a single loop bun. I'll get more creative once my slow growing hair reaches at least APL.
And how do you do them? What is your final goal length?
One loop ponytail second loop knot/bun via scrunchie. Final goal is just as long as I can grow really so terminal length. Ideally, knee length would be hella cool but I don't know if I'm that lucky. Currently manifesting it.
How do you style hair that is not that short, yet still definitely not long?
Because I'm 1b/F/ii, I can't really afford to style it anymore if I want to grow my hair long. I literally have to baby it so as of a few months ago, always protective styles (see above.) Always.
That being said, I'm extremely jealous of anyone who's bless with hair that grows like weed. The injustice of this world.

In my pic, that was approximately 7 months from chin to shoulders.

hard to answer that question, as I grew out from a 'typical' men's cut. I also am not trimming at all until I can get the front parts back into a pony. Then, the idea is to micro-trim the back until it gradually gets to one length. Never done it this way before and it can be quite annoying.
So the best answer is that I've been growing for about a year even. The front parts that started out(if you pulled down over the forehead) were only about 1/2" long, are almost bottom or chin length(almost long enough to get into a low pony), while the back, if wet or pulled straight are slightly below shoulder level. hope that isn't me cheating to get into the shoulder to apl group...:)

Hi! Glad you are joining the party. Just wanted to say your hair is so pretty. And also that I didn't realize ponytails were bad, and I literally took one out of my hair as I read that. It just now dawned on me why everyone here uses forks. Thankfully I have only just now been able to make a ponytail, so minimal damage done.

Yeah I did want a completely different name after I realized that someone else had my name, but they said they would have to make it a variation of what it already was. And they said this situation is one of the few where they make an exception to the rule about not changing usernames, which is fair. I did ask to see if they could make it just Stardust and they said it was already taken lol. Ooh well

Thank you both! Maybe that's what it was. I was really freaked out but perhaps I should give it another chance. I only wash twice a week (a routine that probably needs work as it's some random biotin shampoo I impulse bought and a leave on conditioner spray I've always been fond of) but I do use a rubber massage thingie to really work the scalp. If I use the actual scalp massage exfoliant product, I'd probably limit it to once a month.

I had a little disheartening measure last night. I feel like I can see noticeable growth and I just hit the 4 month mark of viviscal that claims to start working in 3-6 months so I was really hopeful. Then my DH measured me and got 17.5, which is the same as a month ago. Sigh... I know it's not an exact science so I'll try to keep upbeat.

It really isn't an exact science, especially when you are talking half an inch. Sometimes it will say it's not growing on the tape measure but the next month it will be an inch of growth. I think it's hard to be totally accurate.

Mine definitely has that pointed look going on, and sometimes when her little teeth stick out the resemblance is uncanny.
Thank you stardust lady! And it's so nice to hear that you don't notice the crooked hemline right away. I will try to stop obsessing about it. I might check out the shoulder thread soon and I look forward to having you join me soon!
I've got many months but it's getting closer all the time! I've just now been able to wrap my hair up in 2 clippies - a sort of bun. But a major sign of progress!
For everyone in need of hair inspiration, look no further.

I'd kill to be able to do the braided faux hawk. Normally I don't like curls on myself, and actively de-emphasize mine, but mohawks and faux-hawks are so cool with curls.

I am finally out of the military and I can now finally have fun with my hair! After reaching waist length, I cut it short and have left it that way because having it short was easier in my uniform. I'm looking forward to enjoying my new journey back long and being able to have fun styles along the way.

Hi Everyone, due to layers not all my hair is below chin, but the longest parts are. Does anyone else notice how when your hair is short, an extra inch of length is super noticeable, but as soon as it goes past shoulders an extra inch of growth doesn't seem so obvious compared to the length that is already there?

Yes, definitely. I was just thinking about this earlier, since I suddenly noticed how much longer my hair looks than it did at the start of the year, despite only an inch of growth or less. So far this has been the easiest part of my hair growth "journey". Going from buzzed to chin length was sooooo rough. But now that all the layers are mostly past my chin, the process feels like it's so much faster.

I might try a shag at some point. I have mixed textures so I do well with layers. Plus they just look cool. The only thing I don't like about them is the short, center parted bangs.
And yeah, growing a buzz is a lesson in patience. The shortest hair I ever had in my life prior to this was shoulder length, so I had no idea how long it would take. I thought it would be at my shoulder within a few months.

Yeah that sounds about right. I'm a year and a half in, and my sides were completely bald too, all the way around, up to the crown. 6 more months till shoulder, or maybe less. I don't know if I would have done it if I knew it would take 2 years, lol.

Hi Death-Within-Me! Honestly to me your hair looks like its collarbone length! I would say you have graduated.
Welcome EastboundandDown! I remember you from old threads. Nice to see you again. :)
Bat, same here I feel like CBL is a good length for me. I am just now hitting shoulder when wavy and I feel like my face just looks so much better than it did. I need to remember not to cut my hair shorter than shoulder in the future.
I was looking back at old pictures and it looks like it took me about a year and a half to go from buzz to shoulder. I reached mid-neck length after a year or so.
My hair is growing pretty well despite the winter. I have been wearing a lot of half ups and the bottom layers reach my collarbone when I pull them straight. I guess I should go to the shoulder to APL thread pretty soon! I like this thread and all the posters though. :)

Your hair grows pretty fast! My growth rate is a tad slower, but I still count my blessings. The stylist that was cutting my hair every few weeks during the initial transition from undercut to pixie said that it takes her twice the amount of time to grow the same amount of hair. Mine is a solid 1/2" a month, and hers was 1/4". I can't imagine waiting twice the time I already have to get to where I am.
And I totally know what you mean about your face looking better. I haven't made it to shoulder yet, but the closer I get, the better I feel about myself. After the last year of awkward grow-out, I kind of got used to feeling like a goblin, and now that it's a proper bob, I finally feel cute again. That was a nice surprise. Also I wouldn't be mad if all you collarbone folks stuck around for a little while longer. ;)

I'm around 1c/2a, but I think my hair is slowly becoming wavier (which I love!). If my waves look decent I like the look of a wavy, messy bob. But my hair is pretty heavy and thick-ish too, so right now the homemade blunt cut is a little triangle-like. However I do like having less weight on my head for now! I don't really have a goal length in mind-- last time I grew my hair out (2 years ago) my goal was waist and I reached mid-back before I chopped it off. I think mid-back would be fun again!

Lots of good progress here!
Because I'm babying my hair and not styling with heat, I'm dealing with a really crazy curl/wave texture so my hair appears to be growing out but not down toward my shoulders. Not too upset by that because part of my journey is wanting fuller hair after baby and taking Viviscal to hopefully help in that goal.
That said, I'm taking my sweet time claiming shoulder. It's probably shoulder if straight, since I can pull many hairs to collarbone (which on me is barely past my shoulder anyway)

I'm in a pretty similar boat as you! I had straighter hair (maybe 1c) for most of my life and recently it became 2bish. Also quite thick and heavy. Having thick hair around neck length is super annoying! I'm just now at the point where I can clip it all away from my neck, and it is so relieving. I never had short hair before the current cut that I'm growing out, so this is my first time passing through chin to shoulder lengths. I always heard that shorter hair was easier, but I actually found it to be harder. Pixies seem to need a TON of styling every day, and short bobs are just plain annoying, for the aforementioned reason...
I got a thinning cut several months ago that totally got rid of the triangle look. Might be worth considering. Mid back is also my tentative goal. Seems like it's long enough for a nice braid. I find buns to be pretty uncomfortable with thick hair. They make the crown of my head hurt with all the weight. How did you tend to keep your hair when it was mid-back length?

Bat - really great graphic! I'm a wee little person with a smaller than small torso so for me shoulder and collarbone length are just 1-2 inches apart and collarbone to arm pit barely 2-3 inches. I'm very hopeful I can keep a thick hem past shoulder but we'll see. Might need to trim but holding steady for now.

Yay it's nice to know I'm not alone! I absolutely agree with you that shorter isn't easier. My go-to ponytails and buns now require so many bobby pins! I've often thought about getting a pixie cut and the work honestly is what stops me.
As for mid-back hairstyles, I was pretty lazy and wore buns that consisted of a ponytail with the hair smushed up and tied with one of those curly invisible bobble hairties :D Low buns and high buns both. The high ones I did really high so that the weight was on the top of my head rather than leaning back, top knot style. Probably not the best for hair health and it definitely didn't stay when it got longer. I never got the hang of real pinned buns, but I do hear hair sticks balance weight better!

I did a photo thing but I think some of the milestone placements are off APA means armpit abyss for me anyway look how far it is from cbl D:
Looks like I got 2 inches to go seems I'm going to be here 2-3 more months D:

Nice chart of growth Bat! I don't know, I know that for me the longest growth time is shoulder to APL. And then APL to BSL is actually pretty short. Your milestone placements might be more accurate than you realize.
I find the same thing with shorter hair being hard. It is a lot more work to make it look nice, at least for me. I think collarbone length is about when it starts to get a little better for me. Maybe because my hair just needs a little more weight?
Yay it's nice to know I'm not alone! I absolutely agree with you that shorter isn't easier. My go-to ponytails and buns now require so many bobby pins! I've often thought about getting a pixie cut and the work honestly is what stops me.

I did a lot of buns like that too and I think it definitely damaged the ends. It looked good though! :D I still really like claw clips for mid back length hair as well.
Not a lot going on hair-wise with me. Just checking in. Hair is pretty much shoulder length when wavy, and my bangs are long enough to turn into more of a curtain bang. I have been wearing my hair like that all week and I like it. It looks like more of an intentional hair style. I will take my length picture in March and see where I am at.

I just figured out that I can keep my bangs back easier by french braiding the front, and I think I like it! I'm decent at braiding but I'm slow at it and I have trouble keeping braids tight, so I'm using this short length to practice. My arms only burn a little bit :)
An issue I'm having is that this length is weirdly making my scalp hurt more, maybe because I have to pull back tighter to get into a ponytail. The bobby pins aren't helping either. I really don't like it down though, so I guess I'll just either live with it or experiment with other things.
I also just got a shampoo bar in the mail! It's the nettle one from Chagrin Valley. I'm excited to find out how it workson my hair!

Treated myself to a blow dry yesterday for the first time since I started my growth journey with a chop in October. I'm committed to reducing heat use. I took some progress pics but honestly thought it would look longer straight-ish. Turns out I have shorter layers than I thought so while I can still stretch some pieces to collarbone, I don't consider myself fully at shoulder yet. Sigh. Loving the volume though!

The shorter lengths can be so frustrating sometimes, but if you focus on mini goals, it seems to go by faster. Like right now, I'm working on getting my wurls in good shape while I wait on the length to come.

I have decided to finally go ahead and call shoulder-length for myself. My hair feels comfortably shoulder length at this point, and is collarbone length when worn straight. I hope to see everyone in this thread over at the Shoulder - APL thread soon! Thanks for all being so awesome on this growth journey. :blossom:

Feeling a little disheartened. This is my third monthly measure in the 17s. From 17.5" Jan 3rd (which I suspect was generous) to 17.5" Feb 1st, and now 17.75" March 1st.
I'm feeling so stalled. But I keep those 10 year old pics in my signature to remind myself that it's possible, even if thin and scraggly, for me to have long hair.

I know its discouraging, but a few things to keep in mind. 1. I find it very hard to get an accurate measure when my hair is shorter than APL. 2. I have had times where the tape measure said there was no growth, but it looked longer, and when I measured it a few months later, it had grown a lot! I always seem to stall in the summertime for some reason, but eventually, even if things aren't growing down sometimes it seems like layers are catching up, bangs are growing out, etc.. 3. keep it up! you will get there!
Congrats! Like Bat said you could have called it for a long time now.

I have taken to measuring a little more often to try to reduce the noise from optimistic or pessimistic measurements. That may make things worse for you if you fixate a lot, but it's worth considering. Regardless, I really hope you feel better about it soon and I just wanted to say that your signature pictures really don't look scraggly to me! Your hair looks great! I agree with Bat that you have many places you could call shoulder, so you should decide if you're thinking just-brushing-the-trapezius or CBL for when you call it -- I think you'll hit the former soon, especially if you call wet/stretched!

Thanks, Bat! Your hair has been growing so fast that I know you'll be there soon (if you just leave it alone :P). I saw elsewhere that you got bangs - I'm sorry you don't like them right now, but I bet you can figure out some way to style or cut them that they'll feel like they suit you better. I had a major hair change back then after quitting hormonal birth control methods and recently again when I had a kiddo. Mostly all of my hair now is from after I was done breastfeeding so I'm hopeful it stays at its peak fullness which isn't super full to begin with. Thanks for sharing the YouTube link too. I’m starting to wonder if maybe I measured shoulder wrong - according to my little note of my milestones, shoulder is 18.5” and I’m currently a bit more than 16”, so I would have thought I had a several more months in this thread ahead... my shoulders are quite slopey, though - maybe 18.5” is to a lower point on the slope.
I think I’ll wait to call shoulder till I’m at a pretty solidly there shoulder to APL seems like such a long stretch, I’d rather give myself a bit of a buffer.
Bat, stardust lady, Eastbound&Down, InTheCity (& anyone else currently growing on this thread who I’ve missed out - sorry!) - can I ask what length you’re currently at, and where you measure shoulder to be?
