View Full Version : Benign neglect / Everyday updo folks: How often do you redo your 'do?

I've been wearing my hair up more often since summer began, and now I'm curious about those who wear their hair up every day. How often do you redo your 'do? Do you arrange it differently to sleep each night, or do you arrange it once and keep it that way until you wash again?

Sometimes I have to re-do my hair about once an hour. Other days it's good to go for the entire day.
Every once in awhile, I do a top-of-head braid for night, then bun the braid the next day. Usually not though. I'd like to, but my hair gets very messy after tossing and turning all night. I'm such a restless and light sleeper!

Knot bun, and occasionally the Lazy Wrap Bun. (The name fits) It depends on the bun and how jumpy I am that day, usually every three hours.

Put it up, take it down when I feel like it, put it up, take it down, etc. Loose braid to sleep, if I remember to to that, if not, sleep in a bun, wake up, put it back up, take it down when I feel like it.
I think I saw somewhere, someone talked about leaving a bun up for days at a time, but I wouldn't try it. Gotta smooth the crown area when I get out of bed, and to do that, I gotta take the bun down.

I redo my bun at least twice a day; after I wake up and before bed. Sometimes a bun will hold all day and I wont think about it at all, and sometimes it needs to be redone multiple times. Seems to be a matter of activity more than anything.

I work 12 hour shifts as a RN so I'm busy during shifts so I do a number 8 bun which last all the shift for me. On my days off I can change my bun often as I tend to find fault with them when I'm bored! For bed I just put my hair in 2 braids, I don't move around a lot at night and they are normally intact by morning, plus I always use a satin pillowcase which has helped my hair loads

I only change my updo twice a day, once in the morning if im going out and once at night when i put it up on top of my head in a bun. If i dont go out though, i normally just leave my hair in a bun on top. and its easier because i bought spin pins and they just work for me :)

If its in a braid i don't need to do it till the next day but if its in a bun it stays like that till i put it in my night time braid.

I have to redo my 'do at least twice a day. I know there are people who can keep a braid or bun for days at a time, but my hair is too slippery and tangly to do that without a major mess afterward.
Before bed, I braid my hair and put it in a sleep cap. If the braid is still neat-looking when I wake up, I just put it in a low bun for the day. When I get home from school/work, then I have to comb out, detangle and rebraid it at some point.

I tend to redo mine every hour or so as they are heavy and my hair slips out easily. Plus there's an irritating halo of baby hair that needs to be dealt with after an hour or so.
Overnight I use a plait into a topknot which usually doesn't make it through the night.

A cinnamon bun is my go-to, mostly because it's the only bun that sticks for me! Usually the more time I've gone without a wash, the better my bun holds. I'll redo my hair once a day, usually right when I wake up. That's when I'll reoil the ends too. And that's precluding windy weather or other mishaps. I'm much more likely to readjust the claw clip or fork holding my hair in place than I am to completely redo.
If I'm wearing a braid, I'm more likely to mess with it. Braids for me need to be redone in the morning and before bed.

When my braided bun gets loose I redo it. Sometimes I just wear a braid to bed. And other times sleep with it up.

Good, so it's not just me who can't make it longer than a workday without messing with my hair! It sounds like cinnamon buns, figure-8s and braids are a few options that stay the longest. :hmm:

I almost always do a cinnamon bun. I use a single hairstick or 3 big U pins to secure it. I put it up in the morning and comb in the evening when I make a braid. Sometimes I comb my hair once or twice during the day but only if my bun gets too loose or something.

if I wear an English brad I usually just leave it alone until the next morning
otherwise, sometimes a braid for sleep, some times not and then a braided bun for the day

I only usually redo my hair if the updo doesn't hold or slips out. I do always take my hair down at the end of the day, or the next day, though, so that I can detangle and get rid of the sheds.

I twist my hair into a bun in the morning and it usually stays secure until I take it down at night. Sometimes it starts to slip and I will have to re-twist it and put the hairstick back in. At night I just give a good brushing and braid it. :)

I usually wear a top knot. I have found that when I get nervous or uncomfortable in a situation, my coping mechanism is to play with my hair. That usually means lots and lots of taking hair down and putting it back up and taking it down, etc. Some days, this can mean a lot of redoing my style.
In more normal situations, I will usually redo my hair every few hours (sometimes more, sometimes less).

Once my hair is braided for the day, it stays put, with no readjusting necessary. My main styles are a lace crown braid or my bed bun braid on top of my head.

I learned to do a French twist the day I joined here, and have been wearing my hair that way everyday since! I usually redo it once during the day.

Some days i put mine up and it stays happily all day, other days there's a tight spot or I have a headache. Sometimes if I use a stick or something that is new, it takes more experimentation to get it to hold comfortably.
I mostly just braid it overnight, I've tried other things but that seems the most comfortable for me.

It helps me if I put my hair in a braid then put it in a bun, helps me with benign neglect a lot more.
If I just comb my hair & put it in a bun I am taking it down & re combing it or fiddling with it way too much.

It depends, but normally once it's up, it stays there until next morning. Every so often my bun (usually an inside out bun) will shift or sag and get uncomfortable. If that happens, I fix it and I'm done. I take it down in the morning, tangle tease it if I remember (or if it seems like it's been a few days - seriously, I'm all about neglect) and up it goes again. I don't wear braids unless I have a headache - they get all fuzzy and unkempt looking in, like, 10 seconds.

I do either a braid or a topknot for sleeping at night and a bun for daytime wear.... so I comb/brush my hair twice a day every day.
Every now and then there will be some accident and I need to redo the bun - I get snagged by shrubbery, something I'm working on knocks my hairstick, something like thart - but a bun generally is good for the whole day.
If I left my hair in a bun or braid for more than a day I'd look like a fuzzball: much hair would have slipped way from the updo and be hanging down, and there would be tangles galore.

I do a bun in the morning and that usually stays put all day. I only redo it if it comes undone for some reason. When I get home at night I let my hair down as I'm trying to get used to wearing it down so I take the bun down, give it a brush and try to leave it down for the rest of the night. (Which fails most of the time.)
Before bed I detangle and braid and in the morning I brush and bun it again. So I handle my hair two to three times a day.

Lol, I read eagerly thru 3 pages looking for another as neglectful as me.
Right now, I'm off work an est.6 weeks with a broken(6/28)ankle.
So I am at the height of my benign neglectful glory.
Staying in with books,AC,dvds & tv is a treat for me. Catching up on sleep;healing broken bone really keeps you sleepy! So I in no way have cabin fever. I just stay in. No outings. I've been showering & washing my hair weekly, then: it stays in the same tight English braid I put it in, Sunday: to the following Sunday. No taking down or re-doing or frizz worries. But, I'm not leaving the house:and I live alone.
Prior to my ankle break? I'd wear someone elses french braid 2 days, my own english braid, 3. At least,if not the 4th bun it. It creates a fuzzy halo around my face;evenings I put a wee bit of oil on my hands, oil the face framing frizz down & back, and oil & comb the tassle. I never was one to take my hair down and restyle a few times a day. Even young. I have been at my desk:BCL hair at time down, everywhere, re-do of a bun, adventures with new hairpins or sticks, but I sensed I was in for trouble when I left for work w/new hairtoys in that morning. For those that wonder aren't there LHC'ers who do a braid or bun & its in till next weeks washday, untouched? *raises hand* "Here!" Lol.

Same here. Some days I luck out, and my updo will hold all day without any help from me. Other days, I can't get it to stick, and it seems like I'm re-inserting my hair fork 10 times an hour. If I braid it, though, I don't have any problems.

My go-to BN 'do is either a sock bun or an English braid. My sock bun is pinned down with plastic pins and it stays lovely all day. I redo the braid 1-2 times a day and I find it to be a lot easier and a lot more comfortable than the bun. :p

I typically do my hair between 5:00 and 7:30 in the morning, when I usually have to get up for work. I'll leave it up like that all day, until I get ready for bed. Then I'll take it down, detangle it (usually this just means running a wide-tooth comb through it without any problem; it never tangles, ever, anymore, which is amazing because it used to mat), and put it up in a braided bun atop my head for the night with spin pins.

In the morning I do my upside down BBB brushing session, then my updo (try to vary it each day). I normally don't redo it during the day unless I am playing with my hair and trying new styles. In the evening I let it down, then brush lightly just before bed and put sleeping cap on for the night.

Lol...as a hypercurly head, I don't necessarily have to put my hair up as it does shrink all the way up to above my shoulders. I just wear my curls out during the day usually and at nite I put my hair in a low ponytail.
Somedays I do wear my hair in a curly puff or messy curly bun on top of my head. :) But even then at nite sometimes I take it down and put it in my low ponytail or if I plan on redoing my hair the next day I leave it where it is on top of my head! Lol

I keep mine almost exclusively in a top knot secured with a stick or fork. I comb 2-3 times a day and redo the knot around 5 times a day just changing the position, etc. Since all that involves is me flipping my head upside down and re twisting it, I don't see it causing any stress on my hair. I ised to braid it but I find this more comfy and if I do want to wear it down...my bun waves are much prettier than my straight/kinkyish braid waves.

I have to redo my updo/ponytail/braids about 4-5 times a day, because my hair is so slippery.
Strangely, my bangs don't need to be redone that often. I'm growing them out, so I usually twist them out of the way, and they develop some flyaways but still stay put...
Apart from having to redo updo's because of my slippery hair, I also enjoy playing with it and simply can't sit down without doing something with my hands. So if I'm reading or watching tv, and I'm not knitting or crocheting, I'm constantly braiding and redoing my hair on the sofa. It drives my SO crazy! He's convinced I'll end up bald because I 'mess' with my hair all the time.

I have to redo it a few times a day unless it's in a french braid, or a bunned french braid. Styles like that last 24 hours if I want them to. But a cinnabun or a french twist is gonna have to be redone at some point.
I prefer not to sleep with it bunned, and sleeping with it loose is annoying, so I almost always put it in a couple of english braids for sleep.

Typical day: once I bun or braid in the morning, it's up for the day. I oil the length and ends and seashell bun on top of my head for sleeping. Then I enjoy my fabulous bun waves for about 30 min before they totally fall out, in the morning, before I bun or braid again.

If I use a hairstick, I will redo my bun maybe 10 times in a day or more? If it's a fork, less than 3. If I use my u-pins maybe once, but usually never.
It also depends on how slippery my hair is being that day, or how tight I make my updo.

Usually not until I take it down for bed and braid it. Then its up when wet the next morning after I shower....and repeat. If it is down i'll touch it a lot and it gets crazy fast.

Once after I wake up for my day style and once before I go to bed for my sleep braid. If it falls out during the day, of course I'll fix it, but I'm not willing to fuss with it much more than that. Redoing my hair all day would drive me nuts!

Most buns don't last terribly well on me. So far the best is something like a Celtic knot, since I can sleep in it without going into total rat's nest land. But even with something like that, I'm doing pretty well to get 2 days out of an updo.
Braided my hair last night before bed. Right outta the shower too. Wore the same braid out today. It's decently non-fuzzy, so it probably stays in tomorrow too. Since it's one braid, it probably won't last three full days. History is against it.
Twin braids done medium tight can last 4-5 nights. Last batch I managed to get incredibly loose and I had caterpillar head by day 2 tho. Too tight is worse. That perfect medium tension gets me the longest lasting braids.
Both single and twin braids tend to hold up better if I pin them into an updo. Less chance to rub I guess. I don't worry about trying to push past 5 days. I'm not looking for zero handling hair, just less handling.

I've had days where (at the height of my student-induced laziness) I would sleep in a bun, and in the morning I would take the claw clip out, and put it right back in without combing or re-arranging my hair much at all. It wasn't the best looking hairstyle in the world, however.
I can't do that with braids at all, my hair gets way too fuzzy from tossing and turning throughout the night.

My hair comes down basically every night and gets combed out. Occasionally if it's in a braid I'll leave it til morning. Buns get put in in the morning, taken down some time in the evening, and perhaps it's re-bunned for a few more hours sometime in the evening. Braids tend to get redone by the 6 hour point, or they're just too messy-looking.

I've recently discovered french braided updos which have been great for distributed the weight of my hair evenly without causing tension, so lately i've been french braiding my hair and wearing it up during the day and letting it down to sleep, and keeping the same braid for about 3 days. to avoid tangling i oil the hair at my nape before i braid it, and i also oil the annoying whispy bits of hair at my temples in the hopes that they'll stop breaking and hurry up and grow. as much as i enjoy fussing over my hair, i like that i'm minimising handling by following this regime and i have a thing for slightly messy updos, although i've found that the tucked french braid can look pretty neat even if braid looks a mess before its tucked.

This is not a misguided person resurrecting a long dead thread on accident,I'm just curious about this as was the OP in 2012 :)
For me,the more braiding an updo requires,or the more pins it requires, the less likely I'm to take it down.Meaning that I keep my braids in for days if I can and my pinned buns are also done in the morning let loose in the evening or when I want to lie down and the pins feel uncomfy.

:waving: hello, hair twin!
On an average day I will redo my style.... zero times. I do take my hair down every night and put it an english braid for bed; I can easily nap with most styles but sleeping a full night with my hair up angers the halo frizz monster too much to wear the next day.

It depends on the weather. If the weather is bad I wear scarfs and a hooded coat. It messes up my bun sometimes, so I redo it. But at normal days, like today, I redo my bun zero times. :)

It depends on the hairstyle. Most of the ones I do have a braided base, which lasts a least half a week. If I do english sleep braid -> braided cinnabun -> sleep braid, I usually end up redoing the braid halfway through the week, and the bun every morning (sleeping on buns tends to be painful). Amish braids stay up until the next time I wash, which is occasionally as long as 2 weeks. The Elling Woman bun's tail comes down in the night; I usually keep the bun for the whole week between washes, and tuck the tail in again every morning.
Just to be clear: I consider my method laziness, not benign neglect, as I'm not doing it for the health of my hair (that's just a bonus).

Depends on the day. Sometimes buns and braids just don't 'stick', especially after co-washing which makes my hair extremely slippery. Today I even had to wear it down for an hour because I lost the hair band of my braid. I often lose sticks as well on those days. Other times, however, I do not have to redo my buns at all. I just take them out at night and make my default sleeping bun with spin pins.

I wouldn't wear a style that wouldn't stay up all day. Occasionally I redid a LWB with a hairstick, because I didn't have to look at the back of my head to do that, but usually it was up all day until I went to bed. If I had to nap then I'd sleep on my face rather than take an updo down! For me, "putting it up and forgetting about it" can't happen if you have to redo your hair multiple times a day.

At night time I put mine into two sleep braids then put them into a silk cap. In the day, I unbraid it, and put it into a claw clip for the day, it stays like this all day. Very rarely do I have to redo an updo held with a claw clip. I would love to spend less time fiddling, and leave it for a couple of days in braids, but it is so fine and slippery this is not an option for me.

Haha, I was just about to say something similar. With me, it's mostly the "once an hour" thing. My todler and my baby love to pull my hair and if no hair is loose they will make sure it gets loose every ten minutes. SO Yeah, I re do my bun very often and often change style too.
At night I sleep with hair in one braid, and with a night cap on. ( but I often loose the cap though the night)

It depends. I put it in a bun. If I use a wideband fabric elastic or a scrunchie, I put it up for 2-3 days... I only take it down once it starts feeling rough from being rubbed against stuff in my sleep. I got a buff though, so that problem is solved... I now wear my ridiculous top bun EVERYWHERE. Spin pins give me headaches, and just don't hold as well anymore. Hairsticks are hard to sleep on and super tight (for me).
My current regime is sebum only unless I goof and let my hair get ultra tangled... at which point I soak it in conditioner for 30+ minutes. So I'm pretty neglectful. I actually only started bunning like that after a gal on here said she leaves her braid in for a whole week, taking it out to wash, and rebraiding it to wait another week!

It depends on the hair toy. If I wear a stick, I have to redo my bun every 30 minutes or even less (no matter what bun). Yes, my hair is that slippery :-( Claw clips can hold a bun all day. Ficcare is also pretty good but sometimes even that falls out.

Frizz monster is always lurking in the shadows of the night (deleted some monster prejudice).I can't wear buns at night since they either tug at my scalp or become loose and then I tug at my hair.

It does help if I wear spin pins in addition to stick(s). But I forgot the parandas (or is it parandi)! If I wear a yarn one, I don't have any problems with slippery hair. I just find yarn to be a little bit drying.

If I have my hair in a topknot cinnabun (which I wear to sleep) it can last days without getting too tangled. Ideally I take it down at least once every 24 hours to comb, get shed hair out and make sure it's not tangling, but it's a very solid style on me that doesn't move at all even when I toss and turn at night, run or do exercise during the day. Most of the time I put my hair in a different style in the morning when I go out, and put it in the cinnabun at night - but if I am home all weekend for example, my cinnabun would definitely last that long if I wanted it to. I use those jaw clips to hold it up.

Standard for me is bun hair in morning, take down before bed, plait to sleep, and then repeat the next day. Occasionally I do a bun that won't stay all day, in which case I'll redo it once or twice and then switch to a more stable style. I don't have the time or patience to redo my hair every couple of hours.
If I do a plaited style I'll usually sleep with the plaits still in, rather than taking them out just to plait the hair again to sleep. Sometimes I'll make something out of slept in plaits, but not if it is a work day because they go super fluffy which is kinda cute but not professional at all!

My go-to BN 'do is either a sock bun or an English braid. My sock bun is pinned down with plastic pins and it stays lovely all day. I redo the braid 1-2 times a day and I find it to be a lot easier and a lot more comfortable than the bun. :p
I just have to say that I love you hair color!!!

I technically only do my hair once for the day, then either braid or re-bun with a satin scarf for bed. When I take my scarf off I moisturize and de-tangle my hair, then let it dry before I put it in a bun for the day (lately, a lazy wrap). To hang out with hubby I take my hair out (evenings), then braid or re-bun and scarf for bed.

I don't typically re-do my hair, I try to wear it in a different style each day, and make a braid for sleep. If the weather is bad and I'm wearing hats and scarves then I might have to re-do it to make it look neater. Otherwise, it just stays put for the whole day

It depends. I could go all day without redoing my bun when my hair was shorter, but I've been having bunning issues ever since I hit tailbone length. It's mainly because it's heavy and quite slippery (I need lots of cones to keep the tangles manageable).
A sectioned bun will most likely hold up all day, unless my hair decides to escape from the hair pins. If it's a nautilus bun with a stick, I'll probably have to redo it at least 2-5 times. With a jeterfork, maybe redo it once or twice. Any bun held with claw clips stay well, but it may start tugging and hurting a bit if I wear it for many hours, so redoing is sometimes necessary for those too. Braided buns are not an option for me, because they look ugly and lumpy on me and they pull a lot. Double buns with flexi-8s and figure-8/infinity bun with flexi-8 usually hold all day.

I think this is really cool and it's kind of what I do in a way, too. I often just wrap my sleep braid like a cinnabun and it holds well and somehow even looks decent.
If my hair is not braided before going in a bun, it just doesn't hold well. :(
I can't sleep in updos, so I sleep in braids, which can be used in the morning for updos. I tend to re-braid my hair every other day.
If my hair is freshly washed, it tends to be super-slippery, so I end up redoing my updos several times a day, but I only redo my buns when my hair escapes them.
darklyndsea, what are Amish braids? Based on what I know about the Amish, and how long you say they last on you,I suspect it's the perfect hairstyle, right?

I'm sorry for the dumb question but what is a sectioned bun?

Not a dumb question at all! :)
A sectioned bun is any bun that starts with only part of your hair (for example from a half-up bun), and the rest of your hair is then either wrapped around or braided/coiled and wrapped around or otherwise "built" around the "base"-bun.
It can be sectioned in 2 sections or more.
It's a great way of mounting very thick or short hair that doesn't go into updos easily.
Torrin Paige has some great examples here:
