Hey everyone! Let's get July all set up and unleash the next wave of things to do and things to try!

Our topic for July is...

*drum roll*

Ribbons!

Are they an accent? Are they an integral part of the style? Do you go all out, or do you keep it subtle? The choice is yours. :D

Good luck and have fun!

I'll start out by showing something I did in March, giving one example of a way to use ribbons:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4019&pictureid=129287 (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=4019&pictureid=129287)

You can use a ribbon with a braid similarly to how many braid scarves into their hair. It can also double as a way to tie off a braid instead of having to use a hair tie.

Yay, I can finally participate even though I did this almost a year ago... I used ribbons in my zipper braid tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdOWmtWRA40 (sorry for those in Germany where it's blocked due to one of the songs).

Oh I love putting ribbons in braids when I can get the time! It makes my braid thicker which makes my bun bigger if I put it up as well without the weight of a scarf braided into my hair!

Oh yes! The first monthly theme I can participate in and it's one of my fave accesories! :D Will do something up and update my post tomorrow morning (it's past middle of the night in Australia!)

I like to wear my ribbons in bows as an accent to the base of a ponytail or at the end of a braid.. I like the bow shape they're so cute and youthful :) Though I think interlacing it in braids like all your ladies have been doing is lovely too, I just wish I had nicer braids :P

I have to sort them up after eachs braid turn. That is the only advice I can give, I'm afraid.
If someone has a quicker way of getting the same result please share I would be interested as well.

I was having the same problem, I'm afraid the only solution I could find was to gently pull the braid a little looser, that way (for me at least) more of the ribbon showed through.

Sorry, I couldn't be more helpful!

What I do is I take the ribbon to the front of each section before braiding it so that it shows. It takes time, but however I look at it there doesn't seem to be another solution to this. I hope that there is one though!

If you have a TopsyTail tool, what you could do is braid your braid as usual, then thread the ribbon through the loop, then "sew" the ribbon down the braid, alternating from side to side.

Actual hair taping (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m01wsIn-6zA) involves sewing braids across the head with ribbon. Faux hair taping involves making two lattice braids (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-qrPUYUYWI)and simply pinning them down :0)

I find myself quite nostalgic about this style, especially since ribbons were my first "hairtoy", and when I first started wearing my hair in updos, I did hair taping - and this was well before I had even heard of the LHC! :D
I have always done hair taping with braided hair, since I find it easier to get a good result that way, and I don't need an extra pair of hands just to hold on to the hair. ;)
I remember the first time I tried this sort of style. The braids started over my hair, and the braids (excluding the tassels) just barely met on top of my hair. I was fairly pleased with the result, but also somewhat annoyed at bits and pieces that were sticking outs - like bits of hair from the tassels, and the ends of the ribbon.
As my hair grew, so did the overlapping bits of the braids, and the start of the braids also slowly migrated downwards and backwards. :D
It is quite a while since I have done this, and while it is not really a skill one forgets once it is learned, I have had to do a bit of fudging since my hair has grown quite a bit since the last time. The results are reasonably good, though. :D

Thank you, Madora. :heartbeat

At first I wasn't happy with it. I wanted it to look like the braid in this tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g5AIZ4YRlE): the ribbon is flat and not bending at all.
But I guess it's hard to get that result when you braid your own hair, plus I guess it has something to do with letting the strands quite loose around the ribbon, which is a thing I can't do yet since I still have layers and shorter hair would simply slip out of the braid.

Aww Mya, I thought I'd posted an appreciations too but it appears not to have gone through, so here it is again: Stunning!

Thank you for the link, finally inspired to try a four strand braid. I'm not up to tackling it as a crown braid just yet, but here is my side braid (so I could see what was going on with the four wayward strands) pinned up as a faux partial crown:
http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg632/neko_kawaii_hair/_DSC5926.jpg

I pinned the ribbon on the far opposite side and then I was able to tie the two ends together in a bow. I'd give myself lots more ribbon on the pinned side if I did this again.

Thank you for the inspirations everyone! :flowers:

Neko_kawaii, I actually saw your and another comment, but before I could reply they were gone. Mysteries of the forum.

Thank you. I'm glad I helped with inspiration. :heartbeat You did a nice braid and I like the idea you had of tying the beginning and the end together. Four strand braids are fun to do, but it's hard to make them look good: if you make them too tight they twist, you have to keep the same tightness with all the strands and braid them carefully or the braid will look like a mess... It's a braid that trains your skills.

I've done some braid and fabric weaving in my hair over the years.

Below, the first two photos are my braids with 12-foot long ribbons doubled-up and woven in that my husband braided for me for two different Halloweens. The third image is from 4-5 years ago using velvet fabric, cut long and folded up, then woven into my hair. This was for an annual post-Christmas pageant that I sing in every year that has a Renaissance theme. It was difficult weaving in such stiff fabric, and it was heavy! More recently, I found some sheer blue fabric that works far better, though I don't have any photos of my hair with it woven in. Maybe next Christmas.

I love beribboned hair! And parandi :) Here are some of the styles I've tried with ribbons. I must go back to using ribbons more often, lately I only use parandi.
