I have just found in my files a few photos of my hair that were taken 1 year ago (12th July 2011)! I decided to compare the pictures with the most recent ones from 19th May 2012 and share with you. I also have a question. What's my hair colour? How would you name it? :)

Great thing about these pictures is that they are taken in sunlight! I usually take a picture of my hair at home and use flash.

I'll ask my husband to take a picture of me 12th July 2012 to see the real 1 year progress :)

Wow, your hair appears to be a lot thicker. You must be very happy with the progress!
Have you made a lot of changes in your haircare in the past year?
Anyway, Congrats, looks great!

oh, and I would say your hair is light brown

i wouldn't call your hair light brown. i would say medium to dark golden brown. your hair colour is actually quite similar to mine, but richer and deeper i think.

congrats on your new growth. it's very hard to tell what color your hair is because it looks darker in some pictures. But I think its a light-medium brown.

Thank you for answers :) I always thought about my hair colour as dark blonde but recently I think it got darker and it has lots of reddish undertones in sun. Any way the level (I mean the notation the hair colourists use click (http://0.tqn.com/w/experts/Hairstyling-1565/2009/02/Hair-Level-Chart.jpg)) is more like 5/6, not pure 5 nor 4/5?

I'm thinking about doing colpi di sole which is a softer and more natural version of highlights and I wonder what level of hair colour should I use to make my hair lighter just a little bit.

My hair looks thicker mostly because before it was heavily layered (the story about cutting off my layers here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=92157)) but not only. I've been a hair-maniac since that very day the photo was taken! Yes I did change a lot in my haircare routine - oils, deep conditioners, I also drink stinging nettle and equisetum tea ;)

Nice progress! :) Is that your natural color in all the pictures? I'm confused. On second picture it looks medium ash brown, but on forth an fifth it looks really dark brown with violet undertones. Well the sun and flash increase red tones, but it looks a lot darker on other pictures.

Yes it is my natural hair colour, the two pictures from 2011 are the same day (minute probably ;) ) just different angle, and possibly different camera settings. The 2012 pictures are also the same day (the outdoor pictures is the same 5minutes ;) ) and the indoor picture is like an hour later...
I do confess though that I use sometimes a mix of henna and indigo (khadi dark brown) but it washes out after 2 weeks completely. The photos from 2011 had been before I even tried using henna, and the pictures from 2012 were after it was washed out (2 months after henning). Or it might be henna, I mean the slight reddish undertones? Still the sun was much stronger in 2012 pictures.

OMG your hair is gorgeous!!! I, too, have a million layers that I cannot stand. It was so bad I trimmed off 4 inches, back up to BSL. And I still have layers. Driving me nuts, lol, but I must say seeing so many here crawling through the layer gauntlet and coming out with gorgeous hair is quite an inspiration!

Dark, dark brown. Your hair is so lovely! (Why are some of us seeing dark brown, and others seeing dark blond/light brown?)

"Hershey" is an American company that is well know for its chocolate. Here is a good picture: http://chocohalicsanonymous.wordpress.com/2010/07/11/comfort-chocolate/

Curious question:

Why is this not auburn? It's brown and red. It's that auburn?

Everyone in my family has brown-black hair so all the terminology for the lighter colors confuses me. Just trying to learn!

Yes, the second picture looks pretty light in general. It might be some henna and indigo left. It looks really unique and so shiny. :)

I had no idea that unlayered hair can look that lovely.

Nope, no chemicals whatsoever. I used to think that fine hair wouldn't look good without layers (hairdressers, family, friends indoctrinated me :P ). Now I think that fine hair shouldn't be layered.

I agree the colour looks different on every photo :( I am trying to find photos from before henna, in good, daylight and from different angles. I am sure they are somewhere ;)

Found! : D

Below a few photos of my hair, taken 15th February 2010, one place (a room, the first 3 on the same couch), one time (a half an hour).

And with my husband : ) You can see that his hair looks much cooler (ashier?) and darker, even with the same light! Mind that he has course thick, wavy/curly hair (I don't know exactly, because he keep them short). The 6th picture is on the couch, the other two are in the same place as 4th and 5th.

About the hairstyle. I used to go to a hairdresser once a year and ask for a haircut, lightly layered, shortened as much as it allows me to tie it back. Every year the same style for 7 years ;)

I don't see how your hair is light in the slightest. It looks dark brown to me. If your hair is light brown, then I'm naturally platinum blonde.

My own hair is dark blonde which I define as in some lights it looks light brown and in others blonde, dark blonde is that colour which is hard to say is brown or blonde hense the term blondette on here! To me on my monitor I see a definite darkish brown no light brown or anything I would call blonde, maybe it's people different monitors? It's very pretty anyway

I wouldn't say that my hair is light either ;) but I think there are plenty of darker shades of brown than mine.

I would actually call your hair colour medium blond (according to the signature photo), but it is just a label, nothing to argue about.

I mentioned the level of hair colour that professional colourists use which is more universal I think, you can also find the numbers on a hair dye.

It goes like this:

1 - jet black (blue black)
2 - natural black (off black)
3 - dark brown
4 - medium brown
5 - light brown
6 - dark blonde
7 - medium blonde
8 - light blonde
9 - very light blonde
10 - very very light blonde
11 - platinum blonde
12 - white

I found this illustration.
http://0.tqn.com/w/experts/Hairstyling-1565/2009/02/Hair-Level-Chart.jpg

According to Schwarzkopf dark blonde is something like this

http://nypassage.com/images/palette_intensive_color_creme_n5_dark_blond.jpg

light brown

http://nypassage.com/images/palette_intensive_color_creme_n4_light_brown.jpg

and medium brown

http://nypassage.com/images/palette_intensive_color_creme_n3_middle_brown.jpg

L'oreal considers medium blonde (lighter than dark blonde!) something like this

http://di1-4.shoppingshadow.com/images/pi/c2/66/a4/30807043-260x260-0-0_L+Oreal+L+Oreal+Excellence+Creme+Haircolor+Mediu m+.jpg

click (http://www.shopping.com/L-Oreal-L-Oreal-Excellence-Creme-Haircolor-Medium-Ash-Blonde-7-1-2-A-1-ea/info) if you don't believe me ;)

OMG I've learned so much just because I wanted to have some highlights ;) The most important thing is that if you want to dye your hair you should always look at the number on the box, not at the models hair!

According to the person who knows a lot about dying hair my hair is unfortunately to dark to use just a dye, I would have to use a bleach :( And as far as I understand her my hair is between 4 and 5 (medium brwon and light brown).

I don't think Henna ever washes out....just saying. If it did, we wouldn't have so many threads about how to get Henna out. And Indigo is a Forever Relationship, so make sure you're in love before you take the plunge!!!

I think it depends on hair structure. I was actually very disappointed it washed out so quickly I expected it would stay a few months. It didn't. Do you see any difference between the colour on the most recent pictures from 2012 and the pictures from 2010? I don't. The hair from 2010 was 100% virgin, the hair from 2012 was about two months after henna. I would even say that indigo is even less permanent than henna, and after two washes it dissapears (the water turns blue) which lives my hair henna-red. I know some people for whom henna is permanent and they are left with roots though. Just to mention I've only used certified 100% natural mix of pure Indigo, Henna, Amla, Bhringaraj and Neem (Khadi Dark Brown).

I'll probably use the mix again because it makes my hair feel thicker. Thank you for warning anyway ;)
