View Full Version : Removing Coconut Oil From Ends and Length

Two night ago I applied a liberal amount of coconut oil to the length and ends of my hair only. In the morning, I shampooed and conditioned as usual, finishing off with an ACV rinse. Then I put my hair in a french braid once it was damp.

It is now day two and my hair still has coconut oil on it! I had assumed it would have absorbed or at least washed off in the shower, but it hasn't.

I only wash my hair twice weekly, so the thought of applying shampoo again so soon does not sound appealing.

Will a liberal amount of conditioner applied to the ends get rid of the coconut oil that is still in my hair?

Help!

there is an article on here about removing oil.

You can also check out Vanilla's thread of preshampoo routine which I have tried with starting with coconut oil in my hair.

You might have to just suck it up and plan on washing earlier, is it possible that you might as well use this opportunity as a DT? If so here's a thought. Not a very long thread, couple of pages. This made my hair feel very nice.

It should do, see the failsafe method. (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=222)

Thanks! I realize now that I neglected to massage the conditioner into my length. Maybe that's what I should have done in the first place.

I tried CO'ing it off the other day, and it didn't work. I ended up having to shampoo :(

Did you leave the conditioner in for a long time? It's usually necessary to have the conditioner on the hair and scalp longer than a few minutes. When I do oil treatments, I put on conditioner and wrap it all up for about an hour. This never fails to get out all the oil. :D

I have been COing these days and I leave the conditioner on the entire length of my hair throughout the whole shower. With this method, the coconut oil from a heavy oiling session is washed out with ease. Maybe your shampoo isn't strong enough. I would use a cleansing conditioner.

And I have found that I have to really massage my hair with the conditioner like I am working up a lather, rinse it, and repeat the process including leaving it on a second time for a good bit. I rinse it slowly while massaging. I use sports top squirt bottles to wash/ rinse my hair in the sink with filtered water (I don't like using tap water on my hair), and I can get the oil out this way using about six tall (gatorade style sport top) bottles of water, plus the conditioner (or in my case SMT) as long as we are not talking about an extreme amount of oil to start with.

In addition to the other suggestions I would like to add that it helps to make sure your water is very very warm as possible while you shampoo. Then you can cool the water down for the rinses.

Aha! I didn't! But I was getting frustrated with it :(

Ah well, next time :D
