View Full Version : To bang or not to bang.

I have considered growing out my bangs. so I have made a list of for and against bangs.

For bangs:

*I have a problem finding a even part, bangs make sure that even if my parts are crooked my hairstyle still looks good.

*I think my bangs give a nice Gothic feel to my appearance.

*Growing bangs out mean a period of at least a year of them just being annoying before I can do anything with them.

*I think the bangs give a bit of balance to my face and me it look less round.

For growing the bang out:

*I always get little pieces of bangs that are not cut with the rest or get a few hairs cut which should not be so I always have a few thin locks around my face which is in the process of growing out and which is annoying. Not having bangs would eliminate the problem completely.

*I want thicker hair. Now I have no right to complain as I have 4 inches or so around my ponytail, but when the 1 cm of loss I got when I had that mega tangle last year grows out and if I grow out my bangs I might be nearing 5 inches around my ponytail which would be awesome.

*I like circlets and other head jewelry which looks better without bangs, also allot of belly dance jewelry works better with no bangs.

*My bangs need quite a bit of work, they need to be washed twice as often as the rest of my hair, and often it fall to either side or parts in ways I do not think is pretty, it is also expensive to continue to get it trimmed.

If I where to grow out my bangs my plan would be to get allot of headbands, the kind that are hard not the fabric ones, and then keep the bangs out of the way with those until it was long enough to pin into my buns and generally join the rest of my hair, but at the same time I do not want to go all that time not being happy with my hair as the bangs grow.

Here is a few pictures of me with and without bangs. I would be thankful for any advice. And yes I know I did a post about this a year or two ago as well and then decided to keep the bangs, but now I am considering the matter again.

I like the bangs. Your pics are making me reconsider growing mine out. Lol. If I keep mine (trim them back) though, I'd also have to blowdry/straighten them after washing to make them look nice. :(

To be honest I think a long, sideswept bang would look the best :)
It would compliment your features a lot more.

I liked the full ones but phal is right side swept ones would look great on you and you would only need to clip them to the side once your hair was long enough.

I like your face with bangs! You're right - they get you a quite Gothic touch, and if you like it, I think it's worth all the maintenance. Washing them is not a big job, and you can try to learn to trim them yourself. I trimmed mine myself when I had them.

So I vote for bangs!

Keep the fringe it complements you well. If you are unsure about it though consider trailing a different shape? You can always grow it out for a month or two and re-cut it like this.

I prefer the bangs. I have bangs just like em too. Not only do they soften your face, but you look more modern, and they suit your gothic style.

As others have said, longer sideswept is a possibility; I'm considering that for myself.

You should be able to trim bangs like this yourself. That would take care of the expense and the fact that whomever is doing it for you now always misses hairs anyway. They ought to trim your bangs for free in my opinion anyway.

I vote fringe, possibly switching to a sideswept or whispy, for the head wear it's easy enough to pin a fringe back.

I'm not really much help, because I think you look great both ways!

Thank you all for your advice. For me it is either blunt bangs or no bangs. I think side swept bangs looks great on others but I have never been able to pull that look off. I have trimmed my bangs now and again myself and the result have been nice so I might do that. Thanks for the idea of pinning my bangs back for head jewelry, I did not consider that I could do that. Thank you for the compliment Firefly.

Thank you so much Makenzie that is quite a compliment. Christina Ricci is my absolute favorite actress, you made my day better. :D

I love the bangs! Though you look nice either way, it gives a lot more character to the face. Not anyone can pull it off...so I'd say, go for it!

Bangs. If the trimming is getting expensive try getting something like the accuredge (I found it at Ulta) or the scotch-tape trick to keep things straight and self-trim. 10$ for hair scissors and 5$ for the accuredge = 3 bang trimmings without tip, and I've done far more than 3 trimmings. They save tons of money.

You look awesome with bangs! I say keep them. You can always grow them out later if they get annoying.

i like the bangs, but i think you should try a bit longer bangs...the type where you can have them going across your face but also sidesweep them if necessary... so that way u wont get bored of them so easily, theyll be a lil longer so even if they do something weird one day it wont look awkward :p

Bangs suit you. Im considering it myself.

You look pretty both ways, but I really do prefer the bangs.

As another 1a, I know what you mean about blunt bangs or no bangs. Side-swept bangs are no picnic for our hair type. They're always falling in our eyes. So they are not always the most attractive option.

You are very blessed to have iii thickness, and honestly, I don't think that the eventual increased thickness caused by the growing out of the bangs would be better than how nice you look with your fringe. :blossom:

Thank you all for your kind words and advice. I will probably keep the bangs. I do know I am blessed to have this thick hair but I can get a bit obsessive about it. :P I have had bangs that reach my eyes, if I have not cut them for a while and then they drive me nuts, plus they part so I do not get that nice, sharp look to them, I actually prefer my bangs to be rather short.

Although I personally dislike bangs, a lot, bangs is my vote for you. You look far more "balanced" with than without bangs. Have you ever considered long fringe? Lots of people trim their own bangs, and wash their bangs separately from their hair. Bangs should not impede one's ability to form a decent line of a hair part.

Hope this helps somehow,

Another vote for the bangs! I actually like the straight down look on you, but I bet you could pull off the side-bangs as well. I'm gonna get mine cut tomorrow! Cheers for the fringees! :D
