Preferably without hair elastics 'cos they can do damage.

Learn a few simple updos, an make a point of varying them! Even the most hair-friendly updo can be damaging if you wear your hair the same way every day.

I'm looking at all the buns, it gives me hope that they can be done on short hair but every one of them goes SPROING! As soon as I let go (i'm using chopsticks). If they don't, they hurt really bad! What am I doing wrong?

Just keep practicing and doing as many different buns as you can, using sticks is definitly an art perfected with practice! Try watching youtube tutorials for buns so you can copy exactly how they insert the stick. Also, try to use buns which have specific places to enter the stick, so you have guidelines, such as through the loops of the gibraltar (not sure if your hair is long enough for that one) or the finger/thumb spaces in the lazy wrap

It might be that your hair is being pulled too tightly. Bunning short hair can be a trial, especially if your hair is being taken in a direction that it isn't used to.

You might try a small half up bun..wear it for an hour. Then take it down and rest your follicles. Then the next day, extend the time you wear it up. Gradually, your follicles will become accustomed to the new hair position.

You could try using a paranda. They are easy to make, and will add thickness and length to your hair!

You can read about them here : http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=91490

It helps me keep all my layers under control ^-^

Then when you tie it off you can use elastic on just the yarn or you can tie the strands together.

Generally speaking, the best updo is one that uses as little hair manipulation as possible.

Personally speaking, I want an updo that distributes the hair evenly and is comfortable to wear all day.

I prefer braids above everything else but I know there are a lot of folks who swear by buns.

I wear a low braided bun. It's very comfortable.

I like any of the above hairstyles but secured with Goody Spin Pins. I swear, those are a godsend. They hold like a rock but don't damage or rip at all.

Probably nothing much. Notice how Roscata's thickness is ii, and she says SL to APL? I'm a ii also, but I'm looking at the list and wondering what drugs she's on. Why? I'm a 1c/F/ii with a 3" ponytail, and my hair is *slippery*. She's probably got both slightly thinner ponytail and less slippery hair. (NOT hard for either one) I'd class the list as "stuff that becomes available when you can do an English braid". On me, that's around APL.

You don't list a type, but it looks like your hair is pretty straight and average looking for a straightie (ie, looks limp and flat). So your hair could cheerfully be hiding massive thickness and have the ability to wriggle out of anything. Or it could be lack of practice. I'd at least type yourself as far as ponytail thickness, so we know whether the problem is escape artist hair or whether we should be buying you beer to console you while you wait for your hair to hit waist.

It looks like you hair's fairly thick, I would try double buns or half ups. I can just about do a couple, but I'm growing out an undercut so most of my ponytail is thinner. You could also try the bun modifications I discovered:

My ponytail circumference is 3 inches and I have super slippery hair. I can't do most of those updos either, except for the braids, twists, and a cinnabun every now and then with damp hair. I swear I'm not on anything. *lol* Those are just meant as options to try. :D

I think you have straight hair. Straight hair tends to be slippery and spit out hair toys. You can try to dampen your hair with water before putting it up, use aloe vera gel to keep it more together, or stick with braids (braids worked for me since shoulder length, especially double braids).

Yea, I have straight hair, with a 3.25" ish ponytail circumference. My hair is NOT limp (in fact...well some days I'd kill for "limp" hair. My hair goes BOING! at every opportunity!!! It's like a spring lol.)

If it helps when i was APL length hair forks were my friend i had the same problem with sticks. The one updo i did was this one the split bun works with sticks or forks.

I'm not sure of your hair routine, but are you positive your hair is really straight? If it's that... springy, it might be that you're hiding some waves or curls under there. It looks pretty straight to me, but you should properly type it, if you haven't already. I think I can see at 3 major waves.

I'm at APL, ~3.5in ponytail, and it's super hard for me to do anything other than a peacock twist with a big huge fork.

Sarahlabyrinth, in answer to your original question, I'm a big fan of twists. It's a pain to make them hold with a stick or two, but a good fork will overcome that. I'm getting to a point where I can do a wimpy, tiny bun, but since it's only a matter of time until twists aren't an option, I'm doing them while I can :p

I'm sure it's straight. I haven't gone through the whole hairtyping thing but I've tried everything to make curls come out and the only thing that worked is a perm! :p

If I have any waves at all they are WELL hidden.

Oops, typo! I meant 2 waves :p
I think it looks like there's one around your neck area and one at the bottom. It might just be how your hair fell when it dried, though
You must just have super slippy escape artist hair!

Oh that's oiled/slept on wet hair *lol*. But in that pic it does look like 1b. It certainly BEHAVES like 1b. So maybe.

some ideas - dampen hair a bit before bunning, and use spin pins. My go to bun is the seashell, but you will need more length.

Just about any updo is about the best protection one can have from damage, especially when the ends, the oldest hair, is tucked away. I make a similar updo daily, and it uses a single hair stick to hold it all together and up. I don't pin or in any way use anything else to hold my daily updo. Many days, I don't even comb my hair. I'm so lazy these days....

My hair's fairly stiff/coarse and it pings out of updos and tries to stick straight up, too.:D
