When I am doing a braid and I go to bring the braid over my shoulder to finish off the length my fingers get all confused, it all seems back to front and I come to a screaming halt. Any tips?:o

You might want to try bringing the braid up over your crown and continue braiding that way.

Or, if you have braided as far down your back as possible, bring the braid forward over your shoulder and continue braiding.

When you change position note which strand is going next and visualise in your head which way it will need to go, then you already know what to do.

I was going to say exactly what Tisiloves said!

That used to happen to me when my hair got long enough to braid over my shoulder. The only thing that helped was practice. Just keep doing it. Eventually when you flip it over you won't be confused anymore. You just have to pay attention to where your middle strand in relation to the other two. Just try to follow the same pattern. Does that make sense? Just keep practicing. Practice really does make perfect.

I just keep my braid in my fingers how I'm braiding it and bring it over. Then all I have to do is see which strand was crossed over the middle last and start braiding again from the other side. That of course makes a wonky braid.
Once I learned that you need to start dutch braiding in front of your shoulder to get a straight braid I modified that. I still leave my hair in my handhold to bring it over my shoulder. Then I twist it like that so that my hand is reversed. I, strand by strand, remove the strands & put them into a proper hand hold to continue dutch braiding.
I'm pretty horrible at explaining things so I hope you could make some sense out of that. :)

Close your eyes and just feel around the strands. When I'm braiding around my head, changing hands is a nightmare too, but keeping my eyes closed really helps.

*sigh of longing* One day little hairs and you too will be braided over shoulders and around the head *sniff sniff*
