View Full Version : a little disheartened

I'm feeling a little disheartened right the moment. It has been around 7 months since I joined LHC and my hair doesn't seem to have grown much at all. Apart from the small trims I've had occasionally, the only "cut" I've had was 1 inch a few days ago to get rid of my last layers. That took me back above APL.
This was taken a few months after joining LHC:

And this was taken today (sorry the pic is a bit dark):

Is it just me or does my hair grow incredibly slow?

On average hair grows 6 inches a year and it looks like about 2-3 inches of growth there. :)

There's still a good amount of growth there, you're on your way. :) And now you're heading there with the layers gone and fresh ends too. :D

Perhaps your over-trimming. I think if you S&D instead of trimming for 3-6 months you will see a lot more growth. I think the fact that you have grown some inspire of cutting and trimming your mean you have a great growth rate.

Your first picture you state is taken a few months after joining so I'm assuming that's about 4 months growth? And with your trims that to me looks like normal growth.
Looks beautiful - don't be disheartened :)

Keep your head up, you're doing much better than many others out there. I know personally it takes my hair just as long to grow, and at times it can be very frustrating! But I've learned that it takes a lot of growth for someone to notice their OWN changes in length, but it's very apparent to everyone else.
No worries, you're doing great. :)

If it makes you feel any better, your hair appears to be very shiny and healthy in the photos. Even if you don't have the length yet, your hair looks very nice. :)

Including your cut it looks like pretty normal growth to me, plus not everyone grows consistantly, for all we know next month it might decide to grow 2" :D

Your ends are turned under, which can really alter the visual length. You might want to take pics when your hair is wet so the wave is less prominent. That way, the pics will be more accurate. It looks like you have a few inches of new growth, which is pretty good if you've been trimming along the way.

I definitely notice a difference in your hair! It looks super healthy. :)Shoulder to APL took me forever, I felt like my hair didn't grow much at all. Maybe you could try taking length pictures in the same shirt every time? I wear a shirt with good landmarks, so it's a lot easier to see progress. Honestly, if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have noticed a difference most of the time.

If you've had more than one trim over the last seven months, including a one inch one recently, I'm sure that's where your length is going. Despite that, it has grown some.
Your hair is gorgeous, particularly the color. Give it time, and try not to over trim.

I think you were overtrimming. If your hair grows the average .5in a month, then you would have gained 3.5 inches. But then you've been doing trims to remove layers. So that's why it doesn't look like as much. The good part is, now that your hair is all one length, you're free to just grow.

Your hair is much closer to BSL now, I wouldn't be discouraged.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and encouragement. I agree that the battle with the layers probably took off a lot of new growth and I'll try to trim less often. My hair feels so short and I get impatient to see more length :o

Well you said your last trim took you back to above APL suggesting you were APL or more before you cut? If that's the case, then I'm thinking you had more than 1" cut off (did you cut it yourself or did you get a stylist to do it? AND did you measure before and after, if not... and a stylist did it... odds are she did more than the 1" requested).
Your hair looks super, super healthy and shiny, which tells me that you really do not need to trim too often!! If I were you I'd put those scissors away for the next 6 months!! Use the most recent picture as a record of today's length, and then take another pic in 6 months time and I bet you'll be surprised how much growth you actually get!!

If a hairdresser is trimming your hair, maybe you can stop getting trims for a while. Until you can find someone you trust, who will trim only X amount of hair.
Your hair is so pretty.

I average 1/2 inch a month and had cut off 5 inches since last September. I thought my hair wasn't growing but I measure every two weeks and sometimes it's stalled but usually there is some growth every month.
Measure you hair every month and get to see what's your average growth. A trim is usually 1/2 an inch so you might have just taken most of the new growth off. If your hair isn't damaged how about going 6 months trim free.

My hair grows slow to. I use mane & tail horse shampoo. It grew from past midback to waist. In 2010. I added two capfuls of olive oil to my shampoo. My hair had not grown since high school. Keep wearing it up. Since last November 2011, it grew to hip after I started wearing it up. really helps. Keeps it protected & in good condition. Do they sell it in Australia? You can order it online. It's Original Mane & Tail horse shampoo. I hope this helps. You have beautiful hair. Don't get discouraged.

I can see growth between the two shots. You said you've had a cut & trims. That is where your extra length has gone. Plus between shoulder & APL it's hard to notice length change. I'd put away the scissors and the tape measure. Just take length shots in the same shirt every month. You'll gradually see the change. I take mine about every 3 months since it shows more so I don't obsess.
