View Full Version : Does anyone else here love GIGANTIC hair toys?

I love giant hair toys. Actually, I love tall hair toys. I haven't run around enough wide ones in real life to try them on and see what I think of them.

Thing is, I love them and I love to wear them....but so few people in my real life even bother to put their hair up that I feel incredibly out of place with big hair toys in. I have the type of personality where I just keep on keeping on...but still.

What do I consider a big hair toy? Well, this:

or

doesn't make me bat an eye.

And I love my hairsticks/pins to have baubles or flowers on them.

I'm also the sort of person who loves to wear hats, so I'm suspicious that big hair toys is an extension of that.

Any thoughts? Stories? Commiseration?

First of all, those are lovely, you really wouldn't even need your hair up, but maybe curled or half up too. I adore things like that, but I just can't afford them. Someday I'd love to make some though. I adore the vintage Victorian style hair decorations too. I think if you can pull them off then all the better! Maybe you'll start a new trend :)

Well, my hair is big and curly already. I think that's also part of the reason I like big hair toys. They don't get eaten by the monster. :D

I make my hair toys! It's totally doable, affordable, and fun. I just used the Etsy pictures because they're better than anything of mine I can take (only have a cell phone camera). Crafter stores usually have parts that can easily be made into a hair toy with a hot glue gun and some bulk packaged hair clips or forks. A great, easy way to make toys is to go over to the silk flower section and buy the prettiest, most-realistic flowers (big flowers are usually $4-5 per stem, smaller flowers come in clumps). Snip off the stems and hot glue the flower to a premade (smallish) barrette. Big flowers can be worn alone and smaller ones can be pinned or glued into a hair bouquet of sorts.

Here's the last set I made. Everything total cost me $15 plus glue sticks.

And my favorite of the bunch deserved it's own picture. Looks real, doesn't it? :D

And vintage hair toys. Ooooooh. Don't get me started. I'd love someone to teach me out to make art deco style, or Edwardian, or hat pins, or Elizabethan....

I saw this thread and immediately thought "hmm... I did wear a huge Grah-Toe today!" and then I saw your pic and I was like  I love stuff like that! I'm planning to get a couple little fascinators and feathery things, but I've not yet gotten around to it.

Lovely hat. And here I thought that the ferret was a lovely addition. Rather like Tweety.

I also love large hair toys. I have made myself a few dangly sticks. I have two that are over 9 inches in length, but I don't really wear them much as my bun is not big enough yet.

That said, when I create some long hairsticks, sometimes I end up shortening them as I feel I have gotten too long.

I adore big hair toys, I would totally wear the two examples in the OP's post. I really love big hair sticks as well, generally I like things that really stand out. Oh and that ferret is so cute and so is the hat he is sniffing.

I have a tiny head with very flat, thin hair so big hair accessories tend to overwhelm me but I love them on other people. My adorable 5yo niece is addicted to big hairtoys, though. It is so cute! She refuses to go out without some huge flower or bow perched on her head.

(And it took me a moment to see the hat past the cute little ferret!)

I do! :D My favourite at the moment are big bows made of velvet and pattern materials.
And I also love sparkly ones, like little sparkle pins or hair clips. Having curly hair gives the excuse :P I don't have many hair toys at all (I have my Sword "hair stick" and a bridal jewel hair pin my friend gave to me coz she's straight pixie length P: ) but I do love to ogle them at Etsy!

Those are beautiful, I would wear them if it didn't look strange with the clothes I have. And if I had such nice, big hair stuff :p

(And that ferret is just )

Cute ferret - it looked as if the little rascal was planning to take a bite out of that feathery, flowery thing! :D
ai am quite fond of big hairtoys myself - I love my GTS toys, and they aren't exactly small. The same with the axes from Outnumbered Novelties (OK, he has made a few in smaller sizes). :D
I do like the look of the feathery pieces, but I'm not entirely sure they will suit me.
Also, some of my vintage toys are quite sizable. :D

I'm not a big fan of feathers, but I like flowers. I have a couple of Indian toys that are pretty big.

Sometimes when you have a big bun, you have to have a big hair toy otherwise it gets lost!

Ferrets will take a bite out of anything, boxes, hair toys, sock with or without toes in them they are adorable creatures though. I just heard a hair story today. I was over at a friend's house for girl's game night and one of the ladies there said she had gotten long hair extensions, when she woke up her ferret had made a nest of her hair, she had to go straight back to have the extensions removed as the ferret had literary made a nest up there. :P

One of the things I like about the hair axes from Outnumbered Novelties is that they are huge and really pop in you hair.

Love both shops for hairtoys, but too far out of my price range. Lovely for inspiration though!

I love your flowers! Especially the two red ones. I really want to try making some, but I have a silly question I need to ask first.

What exactly is a barrette? I seem to have come across a lot of different definitions from different people and I'm not actually sure what one is to know what kind of thing to buy to stick the flowers onto.

A barrette is a rectangular device to hold your hair up. It can be a clip barrette which is the ones you usually see in accessory shops or a stick barrette which is like a Flexi 8 where you fasten the barrette with a hairstick.

Barrettes:
I buy the ones like this (http://img.alibaba.com/img/pb/787/583/370/370583787_640.jpg) or this (http://shop.hobbylobby.com/assets/item/zoom/242743.jpg) and just hot glue the flower on.

I pick the metal part based on how I want to wear the flowers in my hair.

Hope that helps!

Thanks! I think I know a place where I can get those. If they don't have them I might just try gluing the flowers onto hair forks (the type made from bent knitting needles) so I can stick them in buns.

I love both example pics, and I think for me it is also an extension of a love for vintage hats. I am building a collection :)

The fascinators remind me very much of 20's styled Flapper accessories! Which I LOVE :crush:

And yep, I wear 'em. I do what makes me happy, not what others dictate is acceptable, when it comes to fashion.
