View Full Version : Intresting hairstick styles?

I just ordered my FIRST hairstick this week and should be getting it come this weekend, for now, I have a chopstick to practice with and have learned, I fail at most styles for hairsticks. I can do a french twist, I can do a cinnabun, but other than that, I just can't get any other styles right. My hair is about an inch or so away from BSL and is wurly (and kinda coarse and grippy) so styles SHOULD stay, but, I just don't have the length with the thickness I have. I just tried a lazy wrap bun which should work, but it was a tight lump not at all resembling the bun...its very frusterating. How else can I use my new hairstick when it comes besides updos that are impossible for me right now? Or if you know any tricks for updos at this length, please share. sorry for the long post, I am just a bit (alot) agravated at my hair right now.

and now i just broke the chopstick...crap

Congrats on the first hairstick :) I don't have much advice about the styles that would work best at your length, I'm afraid, but I'm thinking that you could use some pins to help hold the bun, instead of just one hairstick? The hairstick could either be additional support or just decorative depending on the style and how many pins you'd need, etc.

I broke my first hairstick (an acrylic ketylo) because I was putting way too much pressure on it. If you feel like you are really having to lever it around or apply a lot of force to get it thru your hair, that's too much pressure...you shouldn't have to put a lot of pressure on the hairstick itself to get it to hold an updo, it's more about technique, which takes a bit of practice (and it may be that certain styles require longer hair than you have right now). Good luck :)

Oh thank you! I just bought some bobby pins for pin curls, so I have plently of pins! I think I just need to except that my hair is too short (nearly BSL, short, the hairdresser thinks I'm crazy!lol) for alot of buns and be greatful for the thickness I do have, length will come with time right? Maybe can see if I like just a simple cinnabun (sigh). The chopstick I just broke snapped near the end while i was trying a LWB in a half up style, too much preasure I assume, but a pencil broke while I was trying to do a LWB with all of my hair, too much hair and not enough length in that case I think. Maybe I can use the stick to adorn a braid?

i only just learned how to do a lazy wrap bun today, for many on here it's one of the first but I just couldn't work it out for so long! My advice would be too keep trying as it could be technique as well as length/thickness letting you down. Try watching you-tube videos where you can watch instead of tep by step tutorials in words/pictures.

I have very fine, thin hair compared to you so i don't really know what to suggest apart from what I found easy at the start, I think my first stick bun was a gibraltar :)

I WISH my hair was just a bit thinner so buns would work...its not even all that crazy thick to begin with! I have been watching youtube videos and can make the bun as a half up, but still push too hard on the stick (hence why the chopstick broke) so while a full LWB is out of the question for now, maybe a half up is doable if I keep trying? A gibraltar, I'm jelous you can do that.:)

I think I remember some of the thicker haired girls talking about spliting the hair in 1/2 and wraping one half one way and the other, the other way so as to take pressure off the hair and the stick? sort of like two mini buns. Maybe something like that would help?

hmm, I might try this. I just worry it would look funny.

You could try the French antenna braid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_M_oSwRKfc), practically no pressure on the stick. If your hair's a little too short just start the plait lower :)

When you try to coil up your hair cinnabun style, how many coils are you able to make?

One good option is to do some of the styles which require a bit more length as half-ups!

Hollyfire3
June 27th, 2012, 04:43 PM
I was thinking about this, it is very simple and pretty, and gentle on the poor hairstick. I will definitly be using this, thank you.

Hollyfire3
June 27th, 2012, 04:46 PM
I can barley do one coil in my cinnabun and with a stick, the ends like to come loose. I will try to do the half up trick, but I have one long layer in my hair, with the shortest pieces being near my face (where you take the hair for half ups) so the hair for half ups is sometimes too short for some buns too, or has alot of pieces sticking out, and I don't even have alot of face framing bits...

One thing i found that helped when I was first starting out was using a very thin stick. I used a double pointed knitting needle (metal so it never broke). The thin nature of the stick means it goes into the bun easier with less force so it's good for when you are just leaning 'stick technique'.

I hate bobby pins to if an updo requires any more than a stick (occasionally an elastic, but generally reserved for ends of braids only) it doesn't get done!

I don't like bobby pins much either, I just got them for pin curls and occasional use, my hair spits them out anyways so its a lost cause really. I will have to dig up a knitting needle to practice with until my hairstick arrives, wouldn't want to break the new hairstick!

Your hair according to the Fia typing system:

You can post hairtype pictures in a seperate thread to be sure, but I'm sure your right. So, how long is your hair? What is your ponytail? Knowing what side of ii you fall in is also helpful for knowing what styles to recomend.

My hair is about 6in from being waist length maybe a few inches farther. I didn't have to pull ponytail all they way. Most of my hair is the same length.

Hollyfire3
June 27th, 2012, 05:42 PM
I mean how many inches around did your ponytail with all your hair measure to? WIth waist length hair, you should be able to manage quite a few different buns, maybe start with the basic cinnabun then try a braided bun?

Do you know any sites or links for how to? I'm new at different styles. I've always wanted them, and now I'm here and very excited about trying some.

I recommend an LHC meet. I betcha someone there could wrestle your hair into a lazy wrap bun, and teach you how at the same time. ;)

Try the Hair Styles section in articles, or Youtube if you prefer video.

I recommend Torrin Paige (http://www.youtube.com/user/torrinpaige?feature=g-user-u) particularly Back to basics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmTL4cvr7q0&feature=plcp) and Hypnotica (http://www.youtube.com/user/4ypn0tica) for all your bunning needs.

This next style works for me with sticks and forks. It's a twist but the top is looped so it resembles the edge of a bun, so it's a good place to start your sticks. Visit the flexi 8 site, go to styling videos, and it's called the up & down.

Just a thought, can you do a half-up, secure it, then wrap the lower half around? Some creative sectioning can be useful for you thicker-haired folks to do styles earlier.

A cinnabun (the length is shorter, but the concept is the same with longer hair):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JhXxMY5CGY

A braided bun:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBjbGBnF61Y (minus the extentions of course)

at 24" I could do a Chinese wrap bun

even though her hair is classic, her technique will work for much shorter hair

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUT3KJgASac

and watching this really helped me with stick placement

watch how she wiggles the stick on the way in

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cobz1py6RpY

I did a modified version (my own creation, I think) of this at 24" as well

My hair is also very thick, and is now between BSL and Waist. At almost BSL the only hairstick style I could reliably do was the first video. You can also place the hairstick opposite of how it is shown and twist up and around, it's how I wear my hair the most. I still can't any actual bun-styles seen here in my hair, too thick/not long enough. I can get the lazy wrap in place, but that's not 100% of the time. Hope this helps.

Thanks! I think I might be able to do the chinese bun (but my length is not up to date, my hair is nearly BSL, 24 is closer to waist I've had alot trimmed since I did the measurments, I really need to really measure, I just estimated the 24 inches) and the technique for the sticks on the second video is much better than what i have been doing.

I can not do a cinnabun and have it hold with hairsticks, too much hair thickness not enough length for wrapping. I can only really do a cinnabun held with my ficcare. The lazy wrap bun works well mostly, but sometimes I just can't get it to work. It's BARELY possible. The simple one-stick styles work really well, hold all day, and are easy.

I did get my Mockingjay stick, and I LOVE IT. So beautiful. I wore it on Sunday, in a simple one-stick bun, similar to the first video I linked. I got lots of compliments on the stick.

I'm thinking of using the Mockingay stick to adorn a Katniss braid, so appropriate and different. My hair is very grippy so I can do a cinnabun barley once around because of this, I certainly don't have enough length to actually wrap the cinnabun. The LWB doesn't hold at all for me, easy, one stick hairstyles seem to be the way to go. I can't WAIT for my Mockingjay hairstick, it should be coming soon!

The first bun i could do is the gibraltar. Do like a cinnabun but after the first loop wrap the ends under, use the outer loop like a hair slide. My super thick haired friend can just barely do this with some ends sticking out, but at her thickness it's still very impressive.

Hollyfire3
June 27th, 2012, 08:12 PM
oh how very pretty! I might need quite a bit more length then even she has, her hair is very different from mine.

Dorothy, that is a lovely idea, but I can barely do one loop with my cinnabun, with a bit more length though, that will be one of the first styles I try. I am curious to see how big my bun gets as my hair gets longer.

Could someone explain what LWB is. Also, where might I go to familiarize myself with some of the styles you are all talking about. I just watched the video on the French antenna braid, and that looks great, but sadly I cannot even do a French braid. My husband knows how, but he sometimes makes a big deal out of doing it, even though it only takes him about five minutes. I would love to be able to do some different braiding styles myself, rather than relying on him. I am going to start watching more of the YouTube Tutorials on various styles.

LWB=lazy wrap bun. I would say google each style or look them up on youtube, they are simply different ways of putting hair up. French braiding just really takes practice, you will get it eventually! Yay you for wanting to learn yourself instead of relying on someone else! Also, welcome to LHC!

I have trouble with a normal Lazy Wrap Bun (LWB), too. :o
If you haven't tried it yet, there's the Seashell Bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=65935). It seems to hold better than a cinnabun for me, albeit I use spin pins to hold it because it's a bit tricky for me to secure with sticks or a fork. It would probably work better with two sticks instead of one.
Since I've been having so much trouble with the regular LWB, I've been making the 2-in-1 LWB (http://www.longhaircommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82685) instead and it holds like a rock and doesn't look like a blob with lots of crazy rogue endies.
