Today, I put my hair in two pigtails (english braids) soaking wet and crammed a cowboy hat on my head for most of the day....airdried the pigtails that way.....just took them out to do a measuring pic for my Waist by Christmas thread, and I'm amazed at the braid waves!!!! Show me your braid waves too!!!!

Those are so cool. I should have taken a pic of the curls I had after I took down the zipper braid my husband did for me. He is going to put it up again Saturday so I'll get a pic Sunday when I take it down.

So, I have a question. How do those with shorter layers get braid waves?
Is it even possible?
I have considered maybe looking like an alien and doing two braids on the shorter layers of my hair, Then two on the length of my hair 4 braids total.
I have tried doing french braids but they always fall so loose.
I hate that my hair tapers so thin and to even braid it they have to be tight, then me ends look frizzy and FRIED shudder:

When my hair was shorter (I have layers too), I would part my hair down the middle, and do two french braids on each side, going towards the back. Got lots of compliments too....hmmmm, haven't done them for awhile......

I think I will try what I said tonight.
If I were to do french braids, it would be for sleeping, so I get why they wouldn't look like anything in the morning :/
I'll see how 4 braids works :D

I've got my wet hair in braids right now, using the torinpaige method of 4 braids. Now I'm not bragging, these little braids are about 4 inches long!!! So I have to see what happens when it finally dries. it's been over an hour and they are still wet. You all have such beautiful hair, I can't wait until my braid waves look like yours.

My braid waves!

My hair has just reached waist when not braid wavy, so I lose quite a bit of length when it's braided!

Wow!!! They sure fooled me!!! :p

Can't wait to see your real hair that length! You'll be there in no time, I'm sure! Can't believe I've been on this site since 2008 already! Really doesn't feel like it's been that long at all! But, I've been impatient about my hair for a LONG time, it's only since joining that I'm actually making a lot of progress instead of just wishing it long.

THank you Debra :)
My real hair is almost ahoulder length, but with the summer, traveling and crazy music rehearsals and such, I just do not have time for my growing hair at the moment. That's why I had the extensions put in. I want to grow it, but dont have much extra time for the care etc. I use to wash every day or other day, now i can go 4 days without and still look decent. I do updos when it's hot and in all honesty, it's been a savior.
I was told these would last 4-6 months, so if i can do that for a couple or years, i'll be happy to see my hair growing to that length...

Thank you for the words of encouragements... You are really sweet :)

Sounds like you lead a very exciting lifestyle!!! That's awesome that they last so long, you won't even notice the slower months of growth, and then *poof* :magic: one day you'll have long hair!!! Rats!!! I wish I had done that too!!!!! ;) With all your busy-ness, don't forget to check in with us and show us your progress. I have a nice big mirror over my bathroom sink. I stand on a small step stool (like, 8" tall) otherwise the sink obscures my hair, and I hold another mirror in my hand. I use it to look at the face of my camera in order to position it to take the picture. I make sure I move the mirror out of camera shot before I snap the photo. Ya have to have a digital with a preview screne to do this. The old "look through" only cameras won't work this way obviously.

@Amethyste, I use a tripod and a timer to get back of head pictures. Only trouble, it usually takes lots of practicing until I get the correct distance worked out. I just shoot, look at the preview, then try again until I get a pic that looks right.

Sorry I'm so late, I haven't checked this thread in a while XD

I pretty much did this method: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=82.
My hair is thin, so usually I only do two to get natural waves.
I did 8 of them though, four on each side, to get the messy waves. I used baby-wipes instead of rags as well (they're dried out from countless uses XD)

Oh, braid-waves. Once I get a new camera, I'll take pictures of my hair after twin fishtail braids, normal pigtails, and Dutch pigtails. (I'd do single braids, but pigtail waves already fall out after three or four hours on my hair. Bleh.) I also like the potential I've seen after I take my hair out of a box-braid.

Double dutch and crown braids seem to give quite nice and natural-looking ones. I used to be a fan of just putting my hair in as many tiny braids as I could, but you tend to get the pyramid effect from that!

I actually did mine with lightly oiled, damp hair and it was pretty relaxed too. I usually have better luck with braid waves by day 2. By then I've had 2 more light coats of oil that was soaked up. I've only had luck with pin curls staying fresh all day, but that may be because each coil dries faster, but braids have the whole length all plaited up at once. Maybe what works for me will work for you too. :) But if it's beachy (wet from the beach), as you say, it's going to be relaxed. :P

This is how I do my hair for performances (bellydance). After root lifter (or plain ol' hairspray) at the roots and mousse throughout the length, I separate my hair into two halves down a middle part line. Then I bend over so I can braid them coming straight up from my head, then wind each braid into a small bun that sits on the very top of my head.

Jeleebaby, those are amazing! And LakeofGlass, I agree with MiaBeth - your waves are so even and nicely defined, it's lovely.

I don't know if this is due to my hair's 1a traits, but I just don't get braid waves that stick around. They remain actual defined waves for maybe an hour, and after that they loosen more and more until my hair looks straight again, though with some extra volume. Got this before they straightened out completely:

LakeofGlass, the waves are so even and well defined -- did you french braid to get them?
Actually, I wore a low ponytail and used a paranda. I've been fairly addicted to using it lately. When I want a neat hairstyle that is very secure and easy to create, it's been my go-to method. You can use a french braid and then braid the paranda in, giving you waves at the top. Is it crazy to be in love with a hair toy? :P

I am super, super happy with these braid waves. I had washed my hair using "baking soda water." I'm trying this on my hair as shampoo for 2 weeks, to see how my hair likes it. I follow with a diluted ACV rinse. My family commented on how silky my hair looked. I've never seen them acted this shocked over my hair before. The braid waves have never been this wavy. Finger combing barely changed these waves! Yes, I used a paranda, as you can see by the ends. I was also happy with the camera lighting. I had to set the ISO higher just to get the shine; I stood further away from the lights. My hair is actually almost black, but the tungsten made it more brown here. I'm actually wearing my hair down today just because I love how these waves turned out. I think I'll be using baking soda water for a long, long time.

Well, just keep going, Alabaster! I started from that back in 08. Then I was silly enough to cut myself some layers, which bug me now.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I was super happy with it. :) I guess the baking soda water softened my hair just right. And it was freshly washed, so you know how nice hair decides to act when you have that fresh start. I will warn you, your scalp with produce oil more often when first trying this out, since the pH is resetting. But since I oil the length pretty well, it's fairly uniform for me. Next time I should french braid before putting the paranda in. I bet that would be even better... if my layers don't pull out. :P

Here are my braid waves... I did three dutch braids: one down the middle and two on either side. I think I braided it around midnight last night and took them out at 4pm today, so they've been out for almost 3 hours. They look almost exactly the same as when I took them out, but I finger combed them a bit.

Here's what it looked like...

http://i42.tinypic.com/2wqvkih.jpg

And here are the waves!

In my bathroom:

Natural light:

http://i44.tinypic.com/2cgg8yq.jpg

If anyone is wondering, I'm growing out a two-step hennindigo dye job. My natural hair color is a like a light-ish/medium chestnut brown and the hennindigo used to be a pitch black, but it has faded a few shades to more of a brown black.

My roots did not really get waved with the way I braided it (more so the front, the back looks ok). You can see what I mean in first waves picture, the upper left side of my hair got pulled straight. Does anyone have a tip on how to get the waves starting at the roots? My hair will hold this style pretty well as I naturally have wavy hair, but I have trouble getting the braids high and tight enough to get the waves consistent throughout.

Your hair is so thick! A braid from one third of your hair is thick like a braid from one half of mine. Lovely braid waves!
As for the roots- you can try to take smaller sections in the front so the wave will be more define. When I do a single french braid I get the opposite effect- I get small braid waves in the front and they gradually becomes bigger and start lower until the back of my head. So maybe you should try a single braid. I will post a picture after the next time I french braid my hair so you will see what I'm talking about. Lucky you that your hair can hold braid waves...

This is a pic of my hair after being washed brushed back (I am growing out my fringe) and is still very wet that my mam took for me whilst I was watching tv:D

Sorry for the poor quality and the size!
My hair is naturally wavy anyway so thought I'd post it here as it looks like loose braidwaves! :o

What braiding method did you use to achieve these waves? They're beautiful!

It is indeed a bit too dark photo but thats how my hair always looks when i get it out my overnight braid
http://imageshack.us/a/img17/6154/36ri.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/17/36ri.jpg/)

the last ends a mostly a bit frizzy and not that well defined just like others, i guess they getting to heavy for staying long in this shape

Thank you! I did two tight Dutch braids, however I only added from the front ( face in). I had oil in my hair that didn't wash out, I had the braids 24 hours!

Amazing! :thudpile:

leslissocool - OMG those waves are to die for! They look really natural on you. Very shiny too.

nobeltonya - Pretty! Bet that looked great at your length!

Today's loose braid waves. Just from a single English braid worn overnight. Part of me would like my hair to be like this naturally... the other part of me doesn't like losing the appearance of length :p

Everyone's braid waves look very beautiful! I braid my hair very often (only collarbone length though) but I can never ever get pretty braid waves. As soon as I take my braid out and separate it, it automatically turns into a frizzy mess. And if i actually comb it or brush it, it makes it a thousand times worse :/

Hello all, I don't post much, and I've never taken braid wave pictures before, usually just length shots. So, this morning I took some braid wave pictures after my sleep braids, so without further ado,

They're rather uneven as this was two english braids, but you get the idea. I wear braid waves quite a lot as I always sleep in English braids! :)

Thanks guys! :-) My hair was growing consistently at about half an inch a month for over a year, and then in the last 4 months decided to grow an inch a month instead. I'm not complaining!
