View Full Version : The messiest little rose bun that ever did live!

It appears I may have been slightly over optimistic about my styling options :o
Layers+BSL do not a pretty(or even remotely successful!) rose bun make!

Edit!
Added some pictures of another attempt- have tamed the tufts and achieved a tighter twist, but am warming to my tufty version after all =3

So, wondrous people of the pages, what are your fail-proof up-do's for BSL layers?
I think my thickness could be my undoing in many of the styles I try, since I've managed to pull off a very nice rose bun on a friend who has slightly shorter but considerably thinner hair. Any advice for thickness issues would also be much appreciated!

It may be a little messy now, but I think it'll be absolutely gorgeous when you have the length for it! :) Your color is lovely.

That is a gorgeous bun! I will have to try it on my own hair. :)
I don't really have much advice on other bun styles for your hair length and style because I didn't bun my hair when it was at BSL. I think, however, a "cinnabun" [is that what they call it? The simpler one...] is a pretty go-to bun for just about anyone.

Thankyou! :) I know I really should stop colouring, but I've been a bottle-redhead since I was fourteen, and though I've dabbled in technicolour I've always gone back- my head just feels all wrong when I'm brown! Hopefully I pamper enough that my hair will forgive me =D
I think this bun'll be one of those things I look forward to being able to do, like the first time I could put in a ponytail, or put my hair up in a cinnabun post pixi!

It really is, seeing photos of it done well makes my eyes very happy! If you do try it, please post pictures, I need more eye candy!
I usually put a cinnabun in when I'm lounging around and don't want to be itchy- sadly they're one of those styles that made me so excited when I first managed it, but have now become so routine I don't feel 'fancy' in them if that makes sense :o I may be slightly mad!

Your technique is good. Perhaps you might try this:
Divide the hair in 3 sections --the sections on the left and right hand side should be thinner than the center section.
Make your rose bun with the center section.
Loosely braid the thin right hand section and band with elastic
Loosely braid the thin left hand section and band with elastic
Take the right hand braid and wind around rose bun in clockwise position
Take the left hand braid and wind around rose bun in counter-clockwise position. Pin with hairpins as you go.
Voila..one rose bun surrounded by thin braids.

That sounds like it'd be very lovely if I can pull it off! Thanks for the advice! I'll try it tonight, and hopefully avoid braiding myself into a knot, heh.

Aw, thanks Teazel! It has to be said, rogue tuft aside it did turn out better than I anticipated- I'm thinking maybe with a liberal application of pins, I could actually tack it into something fairly manageable =]
I wonder if doing it whilst my hair was still wet would help as well, I've seen that mentioned a few times!

Now thats an interesting thought! I may have to embrace my tuftiness- this could be fun :)

Thankyou! I'm starting to warm to my little tufty bun with all these lovely comments :o If I could just figure out a way to get my hair to grow out of my head this colour, I'd be having a wonderful time :eyebrows:

I have the same issue with most of my buns... but I have to say you pull it off better than I do :blossom: your color is amazing!

Thankyou! I do love my red. One day there'll be a way to get it this way without the chemicals, and then my head will be guilt free! :o
After having a bit of a play around, I think I may have found a temporary solution in pinning it to death. I obviously don't have the length to make the lovely spirals I've seen on other rose buns, but I have a sort of five 'petal' thing going on that I'm quite enjoying, and the tufts have been mostly restrained!

Scuse the glaringly obvious elastic :o I was so focused on reigning in my tufties, I sort of forgot to hide it! C'est la vie.

My friend Hailee has hair that color! I've always thought that if she grew it out it'd look amazing. I love rose buns, but my hair isn't quite long enough to really pull it off either. I can make one, but it doesn't look as extravagant and pretty as I wish it would. Eventually we'll be able to make REAL rosebuns hahah.

n.n Thankyou! D'you know, tuftybuns are starting to grow on me- I think all this positive reinforcement is going (literally :p) to my head!
SoulOfTheSea, love the bun in your sigpic. Slobberface!

Encourage her! We must add to the longhaired hoard =D Yes we shall! I'm ridiculously excited about being able to wrap it around more than once :o

My hair now has a swollen ego, heh. Thanks jacqueline! Adoring your waves in your sigpic, and its such a beautiful colour!

Well, I think it's just lovely. I mean it. It has a lot of personality too, unlike so-called "perfect" buns. Keep-a-goin'!

I'm amazed you managed to do it at all with your thickness! I'm on the thinner side and I can still barely manage one at my current length. Yours looks fantastic though, and the rose bun is a lovely bun no matter what its state.

Aw, shucks! ^^; I think maybe I need to be less 'blargh!' about my updo's, y'all have been so nice! I think this must be the most supportive forum I've ever been on- no one has a bad word to say, just kind words and helpful suggestions! It's such a lovely change from the hotbed of hostility that the internet can be sometimes! <3
Also? I adore the braids in your avatar picture. Drool. I must and shall try something similar soon, methinks!

I think I must have been living in a deluded world :o somehow I convinced myself that my thickness would actually make buns and the like easier- I have no idea why!

It's cute! I like messy buns!
With regard to your thickness, you may want to do multiple buns until your hair is longer (and less layered, if that's what you're going for). For instance, I did three vertical rose buns in mine today. It manages the thickness and the layers.

Okay, I'm totally digging this xD 'It's not a tuft, it's a stamen! Guh!' Totally using this for my justification for all tufts from this point on!

I never thought of that! Dang, but y'all are clever ones. I'll have to try one on top of the other, I think that could look fairly awesome- or go completely overboard and have a row of them all down my head! Oh I do love getting overexcited :D
