I've been doing ACV rinses since I first went natural back in 2011 (I think it may have even been June?!)

I have natural, dark brown hair that sometimes looks black. However, over time, I have noticed my hair has lightened, developed natural-looking highlights, and looks 'reddish/brownish'. Some bits even look light brown.

I'm not complaining! I think it's lovely, and it's a welcome side effect. I read the other day that ACV can have that affect and I though "oh, so THAT'S why...".

Has anyone else had this? And do you have pics?

Here's some of mine;

Definitely changed colour, right? Or am I imagining it?

It definitely changed colour! I actually quit ACV yesterday because I think it was bringing out the red in my hair.

I've only used it on henna'd hair, so I don't know if it made a difference, but I just had to say, both you and your hair are really pretty!

It does change hair color! My hair is black too and I stopped using ACV when I noticed red highlights in my hair. :D I'm not too fond of red in my hair so I switched to white vinegar rinses

*blink, blink* ACV brings out the red? *puts white vinegar in cleaning supply cabinet, goes shopping for ACV*

Yep, it's definately changed colour! It looks really lovely in both the before ACV and after shots. :)

Like SandraJo, I wasn't aware ACV made any red in your hair more visible. I think I might get some today!

Oh no, you don't want red highlights? Do you know if it's reversible?

Thank you so much *blush*

I henna'd my hair before, so sometimes I wonder if it's that, but I can see the colour change from before I henna'd  plus, I'm pretty sure the henna has grown out by now.

Thank you :) you should have seen the awful state it was in before I went natural, though. Bleugh.

Yes, ACV can do that. I might see some color change in your pics, but it's very subtle, and I'm getting distracted from the color change because you and your hair are drop. Dead. Gorgeous. Those curls really suit you and the shine is blinding! :flower:

I can defiantly see a color change... and your curls :inlove: color me jealous! They are gorgeous!

I love the way ACV brings my red out! That's the main reason I use it :)

ACV over prolonged use can absolutely tint the hair a reddish hue. Blondes or those concerned about this can use white distilled vinegar or even lemon juice. Still dilute it the same though. NEVER pour pure vinegar on one's hair. EVER.

My hair definitely gets more red when I use ACV, but sadly I don't have any pictures of it. It's one of the reasons that I'd do ACV rinses, but I've been pretty lazy about it lately. I agree with the others that you and your hair are stunning. :)

Your hair is GORGEOUS!!!!! I use ACV very sporadically, not enough to redden my hair. I wouldn't mind if it did, I like red hair...I've dyed it that color often enough. No more dye for me though. Maybe if I remember to ACV, my hair will redden up more. It's already a brown-red, perhaps ACV will help make it more red than brown!

How often do you do them?

I can't believe I only found out about the highlighting effect the other day!

And thank you :)

I did them every time I washed (about 2-3 times a week) a few months ago when I was experimenting with WO. My mom commented on how red my hair had gotten. Now I do them whenever I think about it, which really isn't that often at all, so the red has washed out. I should try to be more consistent again!

I can definitely see a difference! The colour change looks wonderful on you. :blossom:
I have red highlights like those in the black/brown part of my hair, but I always thought is was just the henna I use. Maybe some of it is because of the ACV rinses? Either way, I'm loving it ;)

I used ACV rinses on virgin hair for several years and I didn't notice anything color-wise I'd ascribe to it, I think the sun probably lightened my hair a tiny bit, but I don't think it was ACV. I'd never read about that phenomena before LHC.

Your hair is really gorgeous either way :)

Your hair is beautiful! :) I had quite a bit of natural red in my hair to start with, so when I started ACV rinses I didn't notice a colour difference. Now I have henna in my hair so it's even more red, haha, and I definitely can't tell if ACV is having a colour effect! It does have a conditioning effect which is why I keep using it.

CurlyCurves, did you know your hair is stunning? *grin*

Yes, I use ACV in the hopes that it will bring out my red highlights. I have not seen a documentable change the way you have though!

Your hair is absolutely georgeous! but yes, i do see a color change. Now that you mention it, I was doing ACV, and my hair has also gotten lighter.

For ANYONE concerned about this reddish tinting of the hair that Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV rinses) gives off to lighter colored hair (at least more obviously so than dark haired folks), I recommend INSTEAD to use distilled white vinegar, OR better yet, lemon juice rinse (which also has a pleasing smell compared to vinegar which doesn't really smell all that much). . . .

I hope this helps some people. The only thing that you miss is the malic acid from Apple Cider Vinegar specifically, which is noted as being beneficial to the skin.

Thanks for the compliments on my curls, guys

Thinking about it, the colour change is probably more to do with previous henna. I forgot that I done a henna application last year. I think it's mostly grown out now, though. I won't be doing it again!
