I went and got the Deva curl no poo and conditioner yesterday... I tried it out today and I like it.... However I got the "starter kit" and it had some extra products to try that I dont hate but wasnt in love with...
Have any of the wavy / s'wavy girls tried this line?
Do you like it?
Do you feel it enhances your wavy-ness at all?
Have you tried any of the styling products? Do any of them especially help to enhance the wave?
I plan on continuing to use the no-poo and conditioner regardless for the next 3 weeks to just gather my own opinuion on it... but tell me what you think

A lot of people start with Deva products when introduced to the CG method and then move on to other products. That was my experience. They didn't do anything special for my hair. I still love the Leave in though. But as far as the no poo and lo-poo I found nicer cheaper products.

Well for me anything is special... I didnt even know I had "curly" hair until a few days ago.... LOL
Up until the last couple of years I've done all kinds of things to my hair... from 12 to 20 it was kept boy short.... from 12 to 29 I was a religious dye-a-holic... I've always been told I had stright hair and have treated my hair accordingly....
Then about 2 or so years ago I decided I wanted to grow my hair out super long. After doing alot of research my plan of action became to stop dying my hair, first. I grow out the dye and had it cut off... Then once the dye was out I started doing various "no poo" / low poo methods... I was using castel soap with ACV rinse... occassionally using a shampoo and conditioner...
I noticed at that point that I seemed to have alot more "body" but I was also having issues with dullness... I joined LHC and started reading stuff on here and the hair typing got me thinking... wait a second? What's this? I have waves???? lol
I found the CG book accidentally at the bookstore a few days ago and decided to try out these products.... and like I said I still am going to use them long enough to get a real hair reaction from them....
So far I'm liking the DC no poo and conditioner but thier are SO many styling products and so many suggestions for... "if you have..." this hair or that hair type... I'm still trying to figure out what exactly my hair "type" is... not just the body of it but the texture and density as well....
After spending more than half my life mistreating my hair what I acctually have growing out of my head is a mystery.. but I really want to encurage this naturalness and nurture the most out of these waves...
I've acctually always wished I had "curly" hair.... So finding out that I might at least be a wavy gives me so much hope... lol
I seem currently to be a 2A but several on here have suggested that with the right kind of nurturing I could possibly be a 2B... That would be awsome... but hounestly I dont think I'm going to get out of the 2A range.... I have long "S" and "C" things going on.... and my spring factor is about an inch or so but will fall out super easy if pull on it or mess with it too much.....
Now this might be a combination of -A- treating my hair stright and -B- it not being over all long enough to really see the compleat curves... my botton layer is now about an inch above APL (got a trim this past thrusday) but the top layer falls at this point from the mouth to chin range....

^^^^ This picture was taken early last week after shampooing and conditioning like normal and letting it air dry with some finger combing
I've been told to really get a "true" type though I need to wash it with a clarfing shampoo, not condition at all and not touch it "period" ...So one of these days I'll do that and make a typing thread...
What are some other products that you've had good luck with?
My goal is to get the most out of my waves

Tried it and wasn't impressed with it either. It seemed to weigh my hair down and make it seem very lifeless and blah. (I do have very thin hair though... But volume is not usually an issue. My hair is BIG!)
Using the shampoo on it s own was okay though.

I actually find that technique matters more for wave showing in my hair than product. And well, as a 1c/F my waves are *not* obvious. People have seriously complimented me on how straight my hair is like I must have gone to a lot of effort. Um... sure... if using a comb means effort.
The most helpful video I've found for technique is Jessicurl's video of Pahoma's hair (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7KCldodunk). Devacurl uses a hair typing system that doesn't match up well with the one commonly used online. That doesn't mean their products are bad, but it does mean it's harder to focus on technique. The folks at naturallycurly.com use a curl typing system that matches up pretty well with the one used here. And Jessicurl uses the same system as naturallycurly, so... if you kind of get LHC's hair typing, you can take your type from here and (for the most part) try techniques out at will. Since you're thinking you're a 2a, chances are Pahoma's video will be pretty useful. The other thing I like about it is while it of course uses Jessicurl products, the stylist does not treat 'em as magic potions. They have purposes! You can substitute other stuff! And she explains how she does so within her line, but... you can totally use her techniques with the Devacurl products. Or with stuff you already have.
And yeah, if I go all out and do everything in the video... I wind up with waves a bit like Pahoma's before pic :). 1c is not very wavy.

When my hair was longer, I loved the no-poo. Right now, my hair is short and is more fluffy than curly, so I usually straighten it. Once it is longer, I will go back to the no-poo. Cheap conditioner doesn't work for me. No-poo has a mild cleansing agent in it that conditioner lacks.
I don't like the conditioner. I was using Giovanni when it was longer, but which one, I can't remember. It wasn't the tea tree.

I've tried some of their products and thought they were nice, although quite expensive. I think it's worthwhile to invest in a couple of pricey curly hair products if you have wavy hair, but it might not be necessary to invest in an entire set. The things I splurge on are leave-ins and deep treatments, but not anything you would rinse down the drain or use in quantity such as a lightweight/cleansing/everyday conditioner or a shampoo. My hair is quite dry (I only wash it once-twice a week in the summer, less in the winter) but I still don't feel like it needs to be CO-washed and moisturized like very curly hair does. So basically, while the CG method has a lot of great knowledge for curly hair, not all of it is necessary for wavy hair--or my wavy hair, anyway. I still shampoo, for instance. This is a actually a big problem I have with the CG method--it makes it sound like silicones are the only things that build-up in hair. Curly hair products, Devacurl included, have tons of build-up-causing ingredients such as polyquats, conditioning agents, various copolymers, even shea butter. You have to shampoo all that junk out, at least with gentle shampoo, at some point. If your hair starts feeling weird during this trial period, clarify it and see if that helps.
Unfortunately, there are few high-quality products made just for wavy hair, so we have to try lots of things to see what works. The amazing technique I learned from the CG method and other curly hair advice is to layer a creamy leave in under a gel on towel-scrunched hair. So, lightly drying hair, scrunching in a leave-in conditioner (I use Shea Moisture curl and style milk) and then scrunching in a gel after that. I use Curl Junkie Curls in a Bottle, a lightweight hold product that's thinner than a typical gel, but is ideal for wavy hair. You mentioned that your waves tend to fall out easily--a gel might help with that. I can't leave the house without a bit of gel in my hair because the midwestern wind around here will blow my wave right out and leave me with shapeless, frizzy hair :( Gel is a godsend, though! I haven't tried any of the Devacurl gels. Have you? Do you like them?
Oh, one more, thing, I've heard crazy good things about Garnier Wonder Waves wave enhancing spray. I haven't tried it, but from the ingredients list it looks like a light hold and moisture spray.
Well, that was longwinded. Do keep us updated on your hair product experiments!

Today I found a salon here in town who's stylest have been trained with the curly girl products... the best part? They're litterally like 5 blocks from my house... I went in and asked about the products and if there was someone who could hairtype me and give me advice about what specifially to use for my hair. The lady I was talking to turned me over to thier, as she put it, "curl girl expert" ...She set me up an apointment same day to come in and have her do the whole method on my hair customized to me personally. She said, as some of you others have here, it's not just the product you use but the method.
I went back at 4pm this afternoon. She washed my hair with the no poo, all the while giving me detailed instructions and explaining to me exactly how I should be doing it at home. She followed with the one condition and the light hold gel... She said while we where talking that she acctually would recomend for me personally the ArcAngel... which is apparently a stronger hold....
It was too funny because I remember when I walked in before I'd made the appointment she was looking at me kind of skeptically about my hair... I had pulled it up into a tight bun that morning because I was in a hurry and didnt have time to fussy with it so it was pulled stright... When she got me in the shampoo bowl and wet my head she goes, "OH! You do have waves in here!" ...lol... that was just when it was wet... She did the whole process, gave me loads of good tips.. and Right now I would almost say my hair looks 2B/2C... I told my husband I kept exspecting it to "fall out" ...because in the past when I've tryied to do it myself it always has just gone to limp waves but this really boosted me "curl factor" ....Once I was dry.. and she acctually said she would have rather me have been more dry for the full effect.. but I was too happy... She said my hair is definatly S'wavy... and after useing the products for my alloted time she said I may even develop more wavy hair... I asked her what her hair type was when she started using the product and she said, Wavy.. and I said "REally???" You're hair definatly looks curly to me.... Like I would have rated her in the 3's definatly and she put herself in the 2's the way she talked...
i'm excited to see what happens with this experiment... It's only the second day but I am really liking my hair alot...
My son about an hour after we left the salon said, "Mom, your hair is curly" ...and I said, "Well yea Sebastian, wasnt it curly when I left the salon?" and he said, "Well, yea mom, it was, but it looks even more curly now" ...I said "Good!" ...My husband even noticed.. and he never notices my hair.. lol
The whole thing was 30 dollars. I dont know if it varies from place to place. I got the wash and style with a compleat explination about the products and recomendations for my hair type and even got a microfiber towel out of the deal wich was a nice suprise because I wasnt exspecting it.
She taught me how to do the scrunchy squishy thing the right way... answered all my questions and was totally SO nice....
I also want to say that she impressed me too because I had done some reading on my own about the product line and asked her about "B-leave-in" ...She said, Yea I could definatly use that if I wanted but that I didnt really need it.. She said it was intended to boost the hair at the roots and to give a plumping effect to the curls but she said I really already had enough body at the scalp..... This super impressed me because if she was just trying to "sell me" stuff I would have left that door wide open because I almost had my mind made up before I went in thier that I was going to buy it.. she pretty much talked me out of it though and said for me I should just use the ArcAngel right now and that should me more than enough for me...
Hounestly she pretty much could have sold me the whole store... lol.... I was so happy with how my hair turned out.... I guess the big trick will be, can I duplicated it on my own tommorow? ....we shall see...

I just started using DevaCurl after trying cheaper and or homemade options for the past year with limited success. I am happy so far. I am not using everything of theirs yet simply because I couldn't afford it all at once. Their products have protein in them and at first I had minor rats nests from it. I added protein-free conditioner (Kinky Curly knot today) and as my hair has become properly moisturized I have had reduced issues and also require less and less of the KC. I am optimistic about the DevaCurl.
There is a video on their website that says what the types of hair are according to them and what products in their line to use for each type.
$30 for a Deva cut is a good deal in my book...the closest salon to me is still 5 hours away and their Deva cuts are $65. (regular cuts are about $50.) Thankfully we visit the area somewhat regularly. :)

And today, after posting this last night - major rats nests worse than before when washing today. My hair looks great when dried. I don't know what I will do. Am going to have to find protein free conditioner (maybe Jessicurl?) and use this DC once a week or something. I have tried going protein free completely and that also was a disaster - have to find the balance. Was optimistic DC was it but I guess not. I am hopeful the stylist will have some good input when I go for the consult and Devacut.

I know this thread has been inactive for awhile but I just found Devacurl and I am completely obsessed! I've always hated my natural waves because of frizz and your typical gel/mousse gives that hard look...the Devacurl gel is AMAZING! It creates the most beautiful SOFT frizz free waves and curls...LOVE IT!
