View Full Version : Any ideas to try for wild, heat-free curls to go see Brave this weekend?

Of course, I don't have her hair, but it is red and can get pretty wild, just not quite curly enough. I had some luck with cornrows, but they were left in for a couple of days, and I can't do that this weekend. Using 4 Parandi also was okay.

However, I was hoping for more in the way of curls than waves. Bandannas make good curls, but they are too thick.

Lots of tiny pin curls, maybe? Although that may make my arms fall off.

Any ideas?

Here are bandanna curls from last February:

I've been wondering this same thing! We have very similar textures so hopefully someone comes up with something.

Bantu knots! Basically little bitty beebutt buns, or little bitty rose buns, maybe 10-15 of them all over your head.

And maybe some mousse for hold and extra-outrageous volume. Sounds like a ton of fun!

Ok my BF and I watch this show called Farscape.

I apologize if it is not okay for me to post pics like this?? I just found it in the google search it isnt mine whatsoever. Anyway! Look at how her hair is like that...In one of the episodes she was doing this little nervous twitch thing and she took out one of those little rollie things in the show and it was like PERFECT awesome amazing curls when she did.

I would search "Jool from Farscape" In an image search if you need more pics. I want to try this though. In that scene where she unraveled one it was really pretty curly.

This sounds awsome! I might try this (of course for me it might just mean lots of mousse and lots of scrunching with some rope braids near the end) I say try the bantu knots.

I can't wait for Brave to come out, unfortunately I have to wait till august because I'm in the UK.
I would second the small buns idea. Maybe if you did some smallish braids as well that you brushed out as her hair seems at least slightly frizzy and the brushed out braids might give more volume to the curls?

Hello!

First off, you have beautiful hair. I agree with the idea of bantu knots, but as your hair is quite long I am wondering if the knots would end up giving you giant, looser curls. That is still beautiful of course! But I am assuming you wanted the appearance of tighter curls like the Brave toon.

Maybe you could try a combination of bantu knots and braided buns on damp hair. My hair is naturally wavy/curly (from 2/c to 3b) but when I want to even things out I do maybe 4-5 damp braided buns overnight, shake it out in the morning and it turns out like this:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/cryst4l/bravecurls.jpg

However your hair may not react the same way with this method, but I know there must be a way to get the look you're going for.

What about rag curls? They're kind of a lot of work, but they produce tight, bouncy ringlets even in my straight hair. (When I do 'em right, at least ) I would imagine if you ran your fingers through them you could get some serious wildness :D

for ringlet type curls i would suggest french rope braids in damp hair, maybe a few for lots of tight ringlets

I say paper bag curls or rag curls with mouse or gel [for extra hold] your hair should be super super bouncy and if you brush it out with your fingers, they'll just. go. nuts.

I'm SO excited to see Brave!

I'm so totally excited to go see that movie too! even my husband said it looks good, which is rare.

I'd love to try for some wild awesome curls too! Maybe I'll get a bit of practise in before going out though. My hair (when I used heat) doesn't like curls, I can do one side, and by the time I'm done with the other the first side has already gone flat. Rag curls work pretty well for me though, and I do have a bunch of old shirts I could cut up...

I say overshoot and make super spirally curls the first night with rag curls and then sleep on them loose the next night.

The spiral curls will get broken down and frizzed just enough for them to turn wild. :D

I'm definitely gonna have to agree with those that suggested rag curls! There's an extremely detailed list of instructions on this site: http://www.longlocks.com/how-to-curl-hair.htm

That's actually the first long hair website I ever went to before LHC! Love that place :)

Wow! Thank you so much! After seeing so much gorgeous hair here, I usually end up feeling like mine is just... adequate, so the compliments are a big boost for me :D

There are so many ideas here to choose from. Since I won't be going until Sunday (and that does depend on my friend's availability), I have time to try these all out and will see what works the best. I was going to go on Saturday to meet up with a lot of people I know from the Scottish Highland Games (wearing kilts, carrying swords, and sharing whiskey!) for a big group thing (around 50 or so), but since I now have to work, I won't be able to go with them.

Hopefully, another friend who was going to go with me will be willing to change her schedule. So, no big Celtic flash mob for me  but maybe just a couple of friends. At least we can both get dressed up because I have one or two good outfits and she has a whole bunch (we met at a Renaissance Festival, just drooling over each other's hair and clothes; how cool is that??)

I think doing the bottom layer of the hair in a bunch of small braids/rope braids would give you some curls along with excellent volume. Then do a bunch of bantu knots with the top layer for actual curls.

I also could suggest baby-wipe curls. They're pretty much rag-curls done with baby-wipes or wet-wipes. You do maybe 15 of them, sleep in them, they give great curls, run your fingers or comb them, and VOILA! If I keep them in for half an hour on damp hair, they give amazing curls, but overnight? With one touch it's a jungle XD

Good luck!

I'm going to also have to agree with those who said rag curls. Lots of them...tightly done. You could get some seriously WILD curls...with a bit of finger combing, I think you'd be good!

Though bantu knots and braided buns would definitely be worth a try. Everyone's hair is so different and reacts differently to certain methods.

Whatever you do, I can't wait to see the results! Pictures please when the time comes! :D

I want to curl my hair with baby wipes per this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5T6JyPzeqE but am wondering....do baby wipes have silcone in them? I don't use a lot of cones, but if baby wipes are full of them, maybe normal rag curls are better for me....

I don't think they have cones but I do believe some have alcohol, which can be very drying.

Oh thanks!:) I actually ended up not using the baby wipes...too small for the big sections and curls I wanted (my hair ends up being too much for the wipes even when in small sections...darn it). I'm now sitting here about to go to bed with five socks in my hair hoping for some big curls.....

I was thinking lots of little sock buns, where all of the hair goes into the sock? I know when I do one bun, my hair goes crazy, so for lots in long hair... It's sure to go enormous, especially with brushing!

Okay, experiment #1 (pardon the nightie in the last 2 shots). I love it, except it is more squiggles than curls, perhaps because of the thinness of the fabric I used. Also, the top is too flat, for the most part. Perhaps with thicker fabric, it might work. It is definitely going in the right direction, though! Thank you, Odonata!

Yeah! I did some rag curls using socks instead and my hair was still very damp this morning....i ended up using the blow dryer on cool for a while to get them drier. I definitly want to try the method you did. The only problem with no heat curls is that you loose SO much length, not that i don't already loose length from my naturl wurls.

The fabric I used was rather odd. It was sheer and kind of stiff, I guess you might say, usually used in fancy things like prom dresses, I think. I didn't have a very large piece, so the strips came out kind of thin, but if they were thicker, I think it might have turned out more like Odonata's. I liked using that fabric because it didn't hold any moisture in, so even though I finished wrapping it up quite late at night and it was quite damp, it was pretty much dry by morning.

my dreads are about texter/sharpie thickness aprox 9/16" or between 1/2 and 5/8 an inch
but because it is hair it is spongy so a thick wad of rag or sock would be perfect - braid firm but not too tight

produces an untame look too cause the curl is not a corkscrew it changes direction more like a wave -

Experiment #2:

Same idea from Odonata (blanket stitch braid) but this time with 4 bandannas and tweaking a little, doing it as kind of a Dutch lace idea (the strand going over the bandanna gets a strand from the head added to it).

Again, ignore the nightie.

I really like this one, not to mention the fact that it was easier to remove the bandannas, but I think a single bandanna on the top would be better. Too bad the photo of the back wasn't focused properly.

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn245/Eirelin/Hair/06-21-2012_blanket-stitch-braid-with-bandannas_1.jpg http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn245/Eirelin/Hair/06-21-2012_blanket-stitch-braid-with-bandannas_2.jpg http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn245/Eirelin/Hair/06-21-2012_blanket-stitch-braid-with-bandannas_3.jpg http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn245/Eirelin/Hair/06-21-2012_blanket-stitch-braid-with-bandannas_4.jpg

I might combine the two ways of doing it, using maybe 3 bandannas and 4 of the other fabric in between them so that I have both the larger curlies and also the smaller, kinkier ones all mixed together.

The idea of combining them might be the answer! I was reading an article about Brave and the girl has hair of varying curl sizes to make it look natural, remeber, natural curls are never the same throughout (ask me how I know lol).

That will be tonight's experiment. I also wanted to try the "blonde afro" technique, but I don't have any sponge rollers.

I think the afro trick looks less like Brave curls than what you're doing. Her's look more kinky and crazy than the perfect defined look of the rollers. But who knows, it is worth trying.

i am soooo glad you are doing this- funny tho i would never wear my hair like the original post dread image- but never thought to apply the same technique to a desired wave, using bigger sections, till this thread- i like the latest results i think the varied sizes is key to the wild and natural look -
maybe i will give it a go myself
xx

I'm glad you like it, too, especially since I would never have thought of it without you!

I think doing it like a lace Dutch braid helps, too, although I am going to try to do the front and top horizontally to give it more volume where I need it the most. Did my description of it make any sense?

Post pics when you do it! :D

I know the Brave Girl's curls aren't perfect (isn't her name Merida or something like that?)

Anyways, I decided to experiment with snake braids last night, to see how it'd turn out. Usually I only do two, for loose but defined wave. Yesterday I did 8- using baby-wipes as the rags (my hair is thin enough to be able to do that )

These pictures were taken straight from this morning:

^^ Just woke up, these were how the "curlers" looked XD

^^ Straight out of the "curlers", no touching XD I really like how this looks.

^^ Combed and brushed. I LOVE this XD It's so fluffy and shiny and soft!! =D

So yeah XD They're pretty uniform (next time I'll alternate it with regular curls) but for right now, they look awesome =D

Ill suggest this method - this woman normally has straight hair about BSL - her hair is HUGE after this technique. There is pics and then her video tutorial.

The local Scottish-American Society invited out everyone who could make it today at lunchtime. With it being Friday and last minute, there was only a handful, but we get to be on the news this evening. Too bad I didn't have a dress like Merida, because they focused more on a younger girl with a long dress. But I did get 2 nice compliments, one from a mom & daughter at a garage sale we stopped at one the way ("She looks like 'Brave!'") and (even better) when the president of the local SAS was walking down the hill toward us, he thought I was actually wearing a Merida wig! That really made my day!

Unfortunately, there are no good pics because it rained and all the curls disappeared :( Since it is supposed to rain tomorrow, I think I will go for almost entirely little kinky curls and just a few of the larger ones mixed in. Oh, not stand right in the rain for half an hour.

I'm giving the blanket dread curl a try today. :D I struggled in putting them in, I don't think I got it right, now that I look at the picture. Watch, half my head's going to look amazing and the other half's going to look weird. Truth is, though, my arms flippin' hurt from doing this!

I'm doing two 'dreads' instead of three.

I went to the Highland Games this weekend and did the blanket stitch idea. This picture was taken before I left, and it did loosen up a bit during the day. The really fun thing was that Caitlyn Boyd, the winner of Scotland's Merida Look-Alike contest was there, signing autographs and getting her picture taken, and people (especially little girls) who saw me from a distance were saying, "Hey, there's Merida!" I also got my picture taken by a lot of complete strangers. It was so much fun!

Oops! It's too big. I will try to edit it and repost.

I tried the bandu knot method last night... fought with it while sleeping and kept dreaming that my hair came out straight instead of curly... well I did get curls but my head looked like a cross between Brave and bedraggled poodle... and my root area was really really flat compared to the curly bit.. like a curly on a bad hair day. And don't let me get started on the knots! I lost a good chunk of hair that decided to mat itself together. Le sigh.

Will have to try another method in future..

Bantu knots - the smaller the size sections you use the wilder it looks. I did this with my straightish hates to curl hair and I ended up with wild foxy cleopatra hair. It looked like a real afro - was pretty awesome.

It depends on how thick and wavy/curly your hair is to begin with but I'd say bantu knots as they do a better job getting the curl right at the scalp and the volume through the crown which makes Merida's hair so fantastic. You may also want to throw in a few tight light braids as Merida has more than one type of curl.

Bantu knots: http://www.lovemaegan.com/2011/09/revisiting-no-heat-big-curls-w-twisted.html

Your arms will feel sore but work with small sections so there are LOTS of curls. And do not comb in a neat part.
