View Full Version : Wispy fringe?

Anyone here with a very light/wispy fringe? I've had bangs in one way or another for a really long time...just recently decided to try really wispy ones again (easy enough...I just pull the rest back) and I'm thinking it's a cute look.

I'd love to see pics, even if they're blurred out or have Xs over the eyes. :p

My new fringe is wispy. I think you've already seen it. I'll try to upload a couple more pictures later.

I can't wait to see more pics, SM. The fringe really suits you. Mine is really similar in the way it's cut. :)

Gonna hang around in this thread because I have NO idea how to do a wispy fringe with thick hair... Ideas? Tips? No matter how I cut my bangs, they are thick and opaque because I have so much hair. I know making the bangs start lower makes them thinner, but mine are as low as they can be and still thick and opaque...

Any "iii"s with "wispy" fringes? How did you manage it??

You have to stop cutting some of it and let it grow back, it'll take a while of course, but that's how you get a thinner fringe;)

Just measure out, or have the stylist measure out, a narrow slice of hair to fringe.

But my hair doesn't get thinner as it grows. It just gets longer...
When I grow out my bangs they stay just as thick
( Example picture (http://i.imgur.com/6RCOf.jpg) )

When I say wispy I mean something like this (http://www.iknowhair.com/wp-content/uploads/chin-length-hairstyles.jpg), or this (http://www.greatestlook.com/upstyles/updo13.jpg), or this (http://www.latest-hairstyles.com/images/haylie-duff-wispy-bangs.jpg). Do wispy bangs just require less hair?

ETA: My fringe is quite narrow too, in an attempt to make it wispier. Right now it's just the hair from the outside of one iris to the outside of the next, instead of the usual edge of the eye. Even then my bangs are thick. I have a very wide face and thick bangs hiding my forehead really exaggerates this, so I'd love to have bangs that...well...keep my forehead visible while still being there :(

^ Those bangs are a pretty thick cut! The stylist would want to put most of your existing bangs back, then gently comb down little wispies. She will probably hold the comb vertically and pull out little bits. They should look fringe-y lying there, not like a solid curtain.

Then she would cut them (on the longish side), then take tiny vertical snips, about 1/8 - 1/4" long each, into various parts of the wispies to texturize them and make them not all clump together.

What does this mean? Do you mean starting my bangs lower down? Because that's what they are like right now (that was an old picture). This (http://i.imgur.com/g2dEF.jpg) is a picture of my bangs now (looking wispy for once! They've never looked like that since!). They start practically at my hair line, and go from iris to iris, so I think that's the least amount of hair I can get in bangs.

Maybe In need to practice vertical cutting, and then accept the fact that I'll never have truly wispy bangs like people with thin hair can have. Sigh.

That is still a very heavy bang for wanting it whispy. There are many techniques I know but it is so hard to explain them :( Maybe you have a natural parting in them that makes them want to be heavy. If you wanted to make them really thin and whispy by just having your bangs be a 1/4 inch section horizontally, it might not work for a very long time because of the rest of your bangs that are above the little section. They would just want to flop down for the time being probably.
I think your bangs are cute though! :) You could always achieve a wispy looking bang with what you have by adding lots of texture and use some thinning shears and maybe a razor. But I would never recommend that to someone who has never had training or isnt comfortable with holding a razor blade in their hand to cut hair. As well, thinning shear use can turn out horribly if you don't really know how.

I don't know much about the wispy fringe. I've got triangle fringe. I recently changed mine twice I like this one.

How thick is the slice of hair that makes up your bangs when you measure from your forehead/hair line to the spot on top of your head where your bangs start, dollyfish? From the picture, I'd say about an inch.

In contrast, my slice is about 1/2 inch, maybe narrower.

I scalp-washed this morning, and my fringe dried like this:

I styled it like this (I like a little height above my forehead):

I like the wispy side pieces, too.

And this is how it looked right after my stylist cut it:

Spidermom, you look fabulous with the wispy fringe! Really beautiful.

I tried to grew out part of my bangs to get the wispy fringe about a year ago, but I realized that my thick, blunt bangs suit me better, because of my face shape. I'd love to have a fringe like yours that looks good on me. Nothing I can do about my long face though.

GlennaGirl, where are your photos? Love to see them.

It's so good to see you both, by the way. :flowers:

You too, FrannyG, what a great surprise! I think of you often.

P.S. - because of my face shape, a full bang would make my face look squashed, like a pug.

Well, I have a fringe that is rather wispy - I don't have much hair, so any fringe of mine has to be wispy in order not to lose too much thickness. :p I quite like it, but I have an awful cowlick at the right side of my forehead, so unless I manage to style it properly while it's still damp and manageable it looks dreadful from that side!

Thank you Schweedie. With it, I think I can happily live in buns, which were really starting to depress me before the fringe.

Oh, sorry, Franny! And good to see you too. :) Here is how it looks from the top so you can see how far in it goes -- not too far at all (but I have thin and fine hair): (it's a clickable thumbnail)

Here from the side and top so you can see how I bring two slightly longer bits down -- I'm growing out the rest, BTW...god this picture is ghastly, sorry!: ETA: Oh, and you can see the two tiny clippies holding the rest of it back. Or I think you can see that. I wear my hair this way a lot.

The rest of my hair is wet in the photos. I just re-washed it. CO is failing me lately. :( (Subject for another thread...)

Spidermom -- hot dang but is that fringe versatile. Sometimes I wear mine parted like in your first pic ("curtain bangs") -- it is an adorable look & I love it.

You're right. I just measured and mine's about an inch. I'm trying to grow out my bangs, so I'll try growing them out and then cutting them back in around a 1/2 inch instead of a full inch next time!

Also one more, more of my face (I hate showing my face, blargh) so you can see how it looks as a whole...this is with most of the fringe pulled back and just tiny wispies...I wear it a lot like this too...or I let the fringes "curtain" to either side this way. Sounds about right. And you can clip the rest back while that part is growing out.

Spidermom, I love your bangs. My bangs are fairly wispy, but they clump together and don't look like that. Mine I guess are between wispy and medium-thick?

You have great hair! That's just the look I'm going for; face framing without hiding/shortening the face. And by the way, you definitely shouldn't hate showing your face! You're gorgeous! Just look at those eyes. And you've got a great bone structure.

Thank you! That's what I needed too: no face-shortening. The lower half of my face is long-ish but I have a short, narrow forehead. Like Spidermom said, for this type of face (don't know if you have it -- going to go back and look at your pics -- I just know you looked pretty!), bangs shouldn't totally hide the forehead.

Let us know how you do with that fringe! Also, you can "try it out" by pinning most of your bangs back away from your face. See if it suits you. I find it an easy, fun look because you can "hide" thin, wispy bangs very easily when you don't want them.

Thanks for your kid words. :flower:

@dollyfish Oh, see...you are lucky...the thick bangs totally suit you! So you can do either. (lucky lucky...) As I said, pull a bunch of your bangs back and see how you like the look. If you do, take a picture that way, clearly showing how far back the bang goes. For now, clip the rest back and just wear your wisps; then when they begin to grow out, take your picture to the hairdresser to show him/her exactly how much you want trimmed (with the rest left alone).
