Tutorials on braiding or styling for newbie, please!

Hi everyone! I am not new to lhf, but I am just getting to the point where I feel
I can do stuff with my hair, now at waist. However, i am a homeschooling mom of three plus a doula and birth photographer so I don't have a lot of time. I'm looking for some easy styles, ESP braids or buns that are not difficult to do. I need very step by step tutorials, as I'm kinda dumb when it comes to things lie this. I want to challenge myself to learn a new style a week.

LaDollyVita33, who sometimes works sort of in tandem with Torrin Paige, is another YouTube channel to try. And Habioku as well. They both have some great braid tutorials. For example, I've been using the technique from this video to do two dutch braids down either side of my head and then combine them into a single braid at my nape lately: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiMeih4b3Sw

I would go with Habioku if you really want the basics explained clearly :)

Torrin's videos are set up so that she does not re-explain the basics in each video. So if she says "just do a rope braid", then there will be a video for a plain rope braid where she takes about 10 minutes to explain it. Some of her more complex styles might refer to 3-4 different videos!

If you're new to braiding, I'd start with the lace braid headband, the faux French braid, and the plain French braid videos. If you really like the look of rope braids, maybe do that one too. (on my hair... not a favorite) The faux French braid is a way to do an English braid so it looks very neat and tidy. You'll sometimes see it called Dianyala braids here. The difference from a "regular" braid is all in how you part your hair. Once that part trick makes sense, the French and lace braid videos will make a lot more sense.

The same thing goes for a lot of other folks who do hair videos. Most "fancy" long hair styles aren't fancy at all, because they're built out of simple components that you may well already know how to do. The trick is putting them all together.

I think LaDollyVita33's Little Black Dress video shows that very clearly. The style is just a cinnabun with some rolls as accents. Sounds bland right? But she takes time to part and section her hair carefully, so the accent rolls are really visible. While she uses a simple bun, the placement is nice. And she adds a pretty hair toy for more interest. She also uses a common thick hair trick of forming multiple buns to get even more shape. Lots of impact for *very* little extra effort over a plain cinnabun. For those of us who aren't iii thickness, a vortex bun subs in nicely.

A couple other really simple videos that shows this off are Loepsie's 4 spring styles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv6PaKIx01U&list=UUkrvCswr4x5LH3-Z8GTCKXw&index=1&feature=plcp) video, Casey's Romantic braided updo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HKWx47RD20), Torrin's video about Bweeta's Buns (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bq0QSgCdeKU) and Gertie's Heidi Braids (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ljaYb7i6iw&list=UUICE2hIBxcNlFJSs945JiFQ&index=5&feature=plcp) video. They're also handy because they build handily on the basic braids Torrin teaches so well. Some of these videos show things like using hairspray, but that's not necessary for the style to work. These are all building on the same basic idea... twin braids. But you can get a lot of different looks off one pretty simple idea.

Before I knew anything about basic braiding I started with some of the simpler Lillith Moon videos. She has a really clear way of showing what is going on. Though some of the things she uses aren't the most hair friendly.
