Hi there!

I know, this is probably the upteenth tutorial to show a French twist. And youtube is quite stuffed with videos how to do it, in many different ways.

However, it seems to be quite difficult to find a tutorial for a French twist on longer hair (youtube "long" hair seems to be somewhere between APL and BSL for the most I've seen). I was specifically asked if I knew of such a tutorial for longer (well, tailbone length) hair, and couldn't find one.

So I just decided to take my cam and shoot some pics of how to do it and share that, maybe it is helpful for some of you, too.

There are various ways to do a French twist. The one I'm showing here is rather easy and works well with thin hair. I have no idea, how this works for rather thick hair, but feel free to share your experience!

ETA: seems to be not suitable for thicker hair!

Let's start:

1. Unfortunately I don't have tailbone length hair. So I used clip-in extensions which look quite unnatural in this pic but that doesn't matter for the hair style I'm doing

2. Gather hair in a low pony

3. Twist hair with fingers inside the loop.

4. Twist even more. Pull hair from the length up to loosen the loop. Don't twist too tight. There needs to be some space to tuck the rest of the hair under.

5. Stuff the tail up and behind the twisted roll.

6. Lay the tail back over one of the fingers inside the loop.

7. Push the tail under the twisted roll.

8. Flip back, push under the twisted roll. Repeat last three steps as long as you have hair left hanging out.

9. Everything is stuffed inside now. Take a hair clip or fork.

10. Secure the loop on top of the twisted hair. Take care to catch the loop of the folded tail also.

12. ... and from the right side. It turned out a bit messy as it was difficult to hold all in place while I was making the pics! I hope it gives the idea nonetheless....

Some advice on securing the twist:
Sometimes using different tools and another way to secure the twist makes all the difference. I had success with the following tools:
- Ficcare Maximas, Ficcarissimo
- different sort of slides, very good results with Flexi-8
- hair sticks and forks
- scroos, pins
- French twist/chignon pins (obviously they will work, they are specifically made for it)
Here is a video from Bijoux Manoel showing a french twist on calf length hair secured with a French twist pin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhEiOQexT0A

Depending on the tool the last step varies. I'm going to provide pics for that later on, too.

Also, if you twist too tight, there is not enough space for the hair to be tucked under. If you twist too loosely, it will fall apart.

I also recommend Hypnotica's video tutorial for a French twist with the top loop securing the twist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qINVg-Ai90

Gah; too much hair! It bulges out of the seam all over the place.

Thanks for the tutorial, it was really clear. :) Sadly I have tried this a few times, but with the amount of hair I'm pushing under the roll it gets uncomfortably tight very easily, and the 'bulge' factor looks better on male underwear models than it does on the back of my head. ;) I find the French slide (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qINVg-Ai90) is a bit easier because I can pull more of my length into the roll, rather than trying to tuck it behind.

Thanks for trying, spidermom. Even when I gather up all my extensions I can only fake 4" circ, tbl length and that seems to be (just barely) manageable, although I need a XXL Flexi and the result is very bulky.

BUT! I found a video from Bijoux Manoel where a woman with calf length hair tries the french twist. First attempt isn't that flattering, second is with tail hanging out, third is basically the same I did. The difference is that the tail is loosely braided, which might do the trick.

Also, as I mentioned above: the tool to secure the twist can make the difference. The French twist pins really are worth their money. You can also try it with several smaller bent U-pins, if you have some. I'll going to link the video in the first post....

Thanks, pepperminttea, for the suggestion, I already linked to that video in the second post ;)
I think the bulkiness is a problem for that style. There seems to be no way of getting around this, other than do variants which aren't exactly the French twist but close to it.

OMG. That's hilarious! :rollin:

One plus for having thin/fine hair I guess. I can still do this version of a French Twist at hip length. Nary a bulge!

Oops! :o I read the tips but I missed that, I'm sorry! Serves me right for not reading 'til the very end. Agreed though, using the slide to put more of the bulk on top of the twist instead of underneath definitely helps. :)
