Tawnylioness...you are a lifesaver for starting this thread! I've been stuck in my own "oh no, here comes another shed" funk for the past few days. I have also dumped untold amounts of money on new hair toys that I can't use because my hair is too thin.

This thread is just what the doctor ordered for me. Thank you. :smooch:

Here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=8761&pictureid=114860) you can see the end of my shed-ravaged braid last year. And here is the puny single braid (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=8761&pictureid=114858)itself, kinda looks like one of your double braids!

I might have the courage now to go play around with those new hair sticks and see what other puniness I can come up with!

Oh...and your twin braids look adorable.

Ms bubbles, looking at your avatar piccie your hair is beautiful! im sorry to hear about your shedding, myself have had two kids in the last 3 years, so my hair is shedding, growing, shedding again and i diddnt have much to start of with :P

hopefully we can get inspired with how to put up our hair, coz i am sick of a scrunchy ponytail :P

It might help my attitude to be able to see perfectly lovely updos on people with thinner hair. I just get so down seeing all those youtube vids of people with twenty times more hair than me.

I imagine all those pregnancy and post-pregnancy hormones kept your hair follicles busy!

I know what you mean about the youtube videos. I just watched the ones for Ketylo sticks and that lady has LOVELY hair, looks like thigh length. Not sure if its the length or the thickness that caught my breath!

I am trying to focus on hair and scalp health, and thickness or lack thereof is just something I will have to contend with. Still going to grow to BSL and maybe waist. Right now I'm not even at APL, so it's a long way from any goal.

Oops, I didn't mean to imply that the name of the updo was "apricot bun", that is just how I describe all my updos because they tend to come out the same size and shape as an apricot. This particular updo is a Neoma Knot (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=152) which is a wonderful updo for slippery straight hair.

I marvel at anybody with hair on the thinner side, that can use a hairstick to hold the updo! :bowtome: I know there are tutorials, etc., but it just takes me forever to learn how to do stuff with my hair.

I understand about the hairstick problem with thin hair - it took me forever to get it figured out. My biggest help was starting with a ponytail, in an elastic. It gave the stick something to work on. After a while I began to feel how it should be and now do not need the elastic.

I have no pic of my poor skinny braid. I'll try to get one though.

Now I'm hungry. lol

I know I have thicker hair than you ladies, but let me tell you, I find your lovely heads well.. lovely. Shiny, silky hair in pretty buns. Amazing!

ETA: and thanks to you gals, I learned another new bun. Which I can't do yet. -.- Hair, regardless of thickness, can be such a blessing and a curse sometimes. Dengit.

I think wee, tiny buns are more adorable than bigger buns. There is a definite squee factor when I see a perfect, yet petite bun. I am glad to see a thread for the thinner haired folks, I just wish that the thread title was less... negative sounding? No offense OP! I just don't like the word puny. :)

ETA: That is an absolutely lovely updo!

Have you tried Ketylo 5" sticks? I have a set in acrylic and they are quite nice. Quattro also does sticks to order so you can get a shorter set if you want. You can also keep an eye on the swap board. I just picked up a set of 4.5" Quattros.

ETA: I should clarify that Quattro does sticks with a length to order, between 4 -6 inches, I believe. He doesn't do custom order sticks.

I love this thread!! I'm tired of having family/family friends commenting "so your hair's starting to fall" ...mind you, this is spoken in Punjabi and doesn't have the most supportive vibe to it if you know what I mean  but my hair's always been on the fine side so I guess it's that much more noticeable that I'm thinning and I'm really not enjoying that kind of attention I've been getting lately...

Anywho, I would love to put up a pic of my hair soon! And I am very much enjoying getting to see the different hairstyles other fine-haired members are using! :)

Custom orders are what works best for me. Most reputable sellers have no problem making shorter sticks if you ask them.

Lissandria, I am in awe of your braiding skills! I can barely manage a single rope braid, let alone double French! It looks adorable in your shiny hair.

SunlightShines, you got some great suggestions already but I have some more: Grahtoe Studios on etsy have "bullet sticks" that come in shorter sizes and work nicely in my hair because they are tapered in the center so they sort of snug in place and don't fall out. MeiFa sticks are the sticks I used for years before I found LHC and the joys of etsy. They have very slender shafts, and their "shortie" size is quite petite (only 3 1/8" functional) and even the full size is only 4 3/8" functional. Pacific Merchantile and Ketylo both have 5" sticks as regular stock. Elymwold often has hairsticks with functional lengths under 5" but his site has a lot of turnover. And as mentioned earlier, many hairstick artists will custom make sticks in shorter functional lengths. Whew! Can you tell it is a subject near to my heart?!

Tawnylioness, your bun is beautiful (and I agree that it looks like a nautilus). Thank you so much for starting this thread! It is wonderful to see all of this beautiful hair :D

maria_asa, you were my hair inspiration when I first came here and was distressed that my hair didn't look anything like "it should". I was overjoyed to find you and the pictures in your album and see that my hairtype could actually grow long and be beautiful. I have been following in your footsteps ever since and I am very grateful to you for lighting my way :flower:

GrahtoeStudios also makes some shorter sticks, and they do customs. I have a few sticks from them that I know are shorter than my usual, so less than 6" anyway. I bought them because they were so pretty, and they still hold great even though I prefer sticks over 6". I highly recommend them; very nice people to work with!

Man, I wish I had some pictures of my hilarious bun-nubs from when I was growing my hair out from very short. Since I had to have a bun in uniform but had way too many layers for a bun to be practical, about half my hair ended up held back by bobby pins; the rest was in a quarter-sized thing-that-resembled-a-bun. It was pretty bad.

However, I'll try to take a picture of my braid tomorrow. It's a pretty little one and, because I'm still growing out bangs, has some ridiculous taper.

Also, does anyone else with thin hair find French braids just "not worth it"? Mine are just hard to tell that they're French braided, and though I do know some of that can be put down to color, it's also because they just don't get defined, if that makes any sense.

And please tell me im not the only one, who when making a cinnabun somehow makes it all compressed into an ittybitty beebutt bun

.... I always thought I was just inept. Do cinnabuns tend to turn more bee-butt-y in thinner hair?

I did this the other day. Two dutch braids that I braided together at the bottom, then I wrapped the bottom in a tiny knob of a bun. My hair is almost APL, but I can't do any sort of bun because they're so tiny. I sometimes see styles on here that you're supposed to be able to do with my length of hair but I can't.

I've wondered the cinnnabun thing!! I do NOT get a cinnabun that looks like the lovely thick haired ladies, I get a bee butt bun everytime, it sticks out...NEVER lays flat. I thought maybe I was just too dang stupid to do it right....lol

Slug Yoga and Tawnylioness, thank you. The braided bun with the sword used to be my favourite but I haven't worn it for a while now. I must do it again soon.
The sword is actually a letter opener I found in a new age store in town so unfortunately I can't give a link to it. I know some other people have been able to find similar letter openers/hair swords on-line though.

ravenheather, that's beautiful! :thud: I love how delicate and soft you hair looks.

Cinnamon buns are impossible for me as well. The first round works ok but the following are so thin it's nearly impossible to pin them. The few times I've succeeded the bun consist of 95% pins

There may be two reasons why you get a beebutt. First off, I have a wicked taper. Part of it is due to hair loss with new hairs growing in, and part is from my layers. The center part of my cinnibun is always twice as high as the rest of it. So if you have a taper too, that might be part of the problem.

The other thing is when you coil your bun, press your hand down on top so the outer coils go around the first one, instead of underneath. I hope that helps!

Head eating bun, LOL!!!! I am so glad to see this thread, I'm always worrying about my thinner hair, and watching some of the youtube videos with the thick thick hair gets to me! But looking at the pictures in this thread really cheered me up, everyone has such beautiful hair, and I love all the buns! :)

how did you do that? :o

I'll try to explain-feel free to ask questions. :)

I gathered my hair in a pony and twisted as though I was making a cinnamon bun.

while holding it in my left hand I placed the fork-held in my right hand, right side down but backwards (teeth curve away from the head) to the left of it. right end is kind of crossed over the left.

with the left hand I wrap the hair away from the head, up and over the comb and pull the tail down behind it.

I then twist the comb clockwise so the teeth are pointing up, still holding the end of the pony.

***at this point the teeth are pointing up and still curving away from the head***

lift the top of the fork out from the head, so the teeth begin to point towards the back of your head, then down. You are still pulling the end of the pony down. On my head it's only an inch or so of hair anyway. :o

now the fork is slid down, catching scalp hair. Before you push the tines through the bottom, wrap the ends under the "bun" and pull a tiny bit of hair over the ends so the fork goes through it and hides the ends.

Does that make sense? IF not, I can take play by play photos. It's REALLY easy, even if it doesn't sound it.

oh i tried it here is my attempt, i need a larger form, and maybe dont twist so much, and maybe do it when wet so its not so messy :D but dang this thing is solid, i dont think it will fall out anytime soon :D thankyou very much :) i might wear this to taekwondo ^^

I think what you are doing is a fork tuck bun. Here is my version.

I think my braids are really skinny near the middle and at the ends here they are

Least its thickening up at the top hopefully that should travel down soon, i often beat myself up over how thin the ends are.

A french braid tapers a lot on me i think.

Sorry if my pic was too small. It took about 10 tries just to post that one.

Where does everyone get the shorter hairsticks? All the ones I've found are way too long for my hair.
Have you thought about using a chop sticks? You can alter the length to your needs easily with garden scissors or kitchen scissors and then file it with old nail file or sand paper (whatever is more convenient). Or maybe use old short pencil or color pencils. You can use clear nail polish for the sharpened end so your hair won't get caught and damaged.

Now, I truthfully don't think your hair is puny, I think it is beautiful, shiny and thick, even in the braids your show. I think the apperance of taper is from left over layers, the rest of the hair will eventually catch up, don't worry.:) And also, the "puny" hair so far on here, is ABSOLUTLY beautiful, so elegant and sleek! My updos will NEVER look so contained and perfect!

I have to say that all of your buns look so delicate and pretty! Your braids look elegant! I wish I could get my buns to look like yours instead of messes of hair that have no definable shape.

Be proud of what you have! There are always positives and negatives to everything. :D
