View Full Version : Sudden dandruff problems after COing for a long time

I've been using this Live Clean (only available in Canada, methinks, and mostly coconut, almond and palm oil) conditioner for CO for over 9ish months now. Recently (I can't really recall before this), I had a severe case of dandruff and scalp itchiness, which lead to bad flaking and bleeding. After shampooing, the problem went away. I haven't changed my routine for all this time. I'm afraid to try CO again, so I thought I'd maybe ask for help:

My conditioner smells differently than when I first bought it, which was about 4 months ago. It smells a little off, and definitely not the sweet smell when I first bought it. Could this be the problem?

PS. I tend to have weird problems that other people don't seem to have; what's the best way to ask my questions? I'm taking a long time to write anything on LHC because I felt uncomfortable not knowing how to ask for help.

I get scalp build-up from COing, it's a common problem easily fixed with shampoo, a scalp scrub (http://www.longhaircommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87690&highlight=scalp+scrub) or scrtiching (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=43285&postcount=2). If your hair loves CO there is no reason to stop, you'll just have to use shampoo every now and then when you see scalp build-up. It also sounds like your conditioner may have gone bad. Maybe you should get a new bottle.

If you have questions posting a thread is a great way to get answers and you can ask them here now if you have more questions. You can also look through the article section (http://www.longhaircommunity.com/forums/vbjournal.php) or do a search (http://www.longhaircommunity.com/forums/search.php). Sometimes google gives good search results too if you add "long hair community" at the end of your search to find answers from this forum.

Hope that helps! :)

I get really bad flakes and scalp build-up from conditioner with 'cones. Check to see if the formula for your conditioner was changed to contain silicone ingredients. (There's an article with all the types of silicones:http://www.longhaircommunity.com/forums/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=13.)

I get some flakes from any CO-washing if I do it for more than a week or so. I have had luck with COing and using shampoo only as needed (like Roscata suggested), but I prefer less hassle, so I just use a sulfate-free shampoo and gave up on CO.

What do you mean by "scalp buildup" exactly? A build up of conditioner? Skin flakes? I tend to have flakes come off in chunks, much like pictures I see of dandruff on google, though nowhere as severe; I'm not sure right now if shampoo solves my scalp problem, but I know it doesn't help actually take out the flakes that are already there very much.

Psst, when you're using google, you can use site: to search a particular site, like "cheese site:longhaircommunity.com"

I've read a bit on silicones on LHC and that's why I avoided silicones when picking conditioners :p. Hm, what other detergents are there other than sulfates?

My shampoo, L'Oreal EverSleek Intense Smoothing, has these ingredients which I think are surfactants:
Cocamidopropyl Betaine , Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate , Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate , Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate

I'm going to not subtlely insert another question, since I don't really want to populate the first page of the forum with topics on my questions :D.

How do you wash out conditioner exactly? This is something I've seemed to have trouble with for a long time. I usually spend 10 minutes or more just trying to wash out conditioner, and even then, when my hair is almost dry, I can feel that some conditioner is still stuck in there. When I run my fingers through my hair, hair seems to stick together (which I assume is the result of not washing out conditioner fully). I've tried this with two conditioners by Live Clean and haven't gotten a different type of conditioner (and haven't kept a hair journal D:); I'm not sure if this is because of my particular conditioner or I'm just missing something.
