Help my fellow LHCers!
DBF has some severe dandruff and scaling with some very bad areas that are scabbing. He is a CO and has not changed his hair care routine. He is completely open to me getting my hands in there and do whatever I want to alleviate the situation.
So far I have tried:
-A moisture/exfoliant made of brown sugar, olive oil, coconut oil, and almond oil
-Monistat
-ACV rinses
-Oil shampoo method
-Scalp massage and chelating shampoo
This has been over the course of months and while these techniques seem to help somewhat, it's still not going away. Currently I am having DBF take fish oil and eat coconut oil to help his Omega/Fat balance.
Any other suggestions? Thanks! :)

I know from experience that coal tar (in shampoos) is an excellent way to get rid of dandruff. It smells horrid but it works so well.
Unfortunately I can't find it where I live, but it shouldn't be too difficult.
Another thing I found that helps a bit is putting a bit of ordinary moisturizer near my hairline, on my forehead and on my part. I also condition my head when the problem is really bad, since I have slow grease-build up, but that's not for everyone.
It's really frustrating, I know. If it gets really bad, you can take him to a doctor, they can prescribe some things for it :]

Haha when you say "take him to the doctor" I picture placing him in a pet carrier against his will
Thanks I will look into coal tar!

one that worked for me was baby shampoo as it is not strong and is ph neutral but conditioner is needed as it is fairly drying x

I've had some severe case of dandruff some two years ago and I tried every damn shampoo - dandruff or natural (Hauschka, etc.) and the only thing that helped me was Nizoral. I did the cure and then maintained for a couple of months and then it was finally gone. Had to turn to harsh chemicals in the end, unfortunately :(

An old grandma's trick is to run a mixture of lemon and sugar onto the scalp and leave for about 15 mins. Doing the same with vinegar can help too as vinegar is good for just about everything.
As for products, try Try argan oil, it deeply conditions, smooths and gets rid of dandruff. It also strengthens hair and prevents hair loss. Just google argan oil and you'll see that it's the best oil you can possibly use on your hair! It just about combines all of the benefits of castor, olive, coconut, almond, mira, rosemary oils and is a great source of vitamin E. You'll love it :)

Second Nizoral. It's active ingredient is an anti-fungal. With severe dandruff, yeast is frequently the problem, Nizoral really makes a difference!

You might try adding some Tea Tree oil into the mix. Or either adding rosemary essential oil or infusing rosemary leaves in ACV. Nettles are also good for scalp problems, make a strong infusion, use like ACV.
He might also just need to shampoo occasionally, if I understand CO to mean conditioner only.

What helped my husband, has been:
-changing his diet for the better.
-scritching with a fine toothed comb once a week (lifts dead skin cells and oil off scalp) before a washing.
-tea tree oil. I use pure tea tree oil and I don't dilute it. apply directly to scalp.
it used to be so bad that even with his BSL hair, it was falling like snow. now its like he has a "shed" once a month or two.
EDIT: looking at the other comments, yes it is a yeast problem. If you want to address potential problems in the gut, try Kombucha and/or Kefir. They are strong and potent probiotics.

Do try the Nizoral. I think it's a good idea in this case, esp. as there's not just dandruff there but scaling and scabbing.

I don't know how serious his condition is, but for mild dandruff, flaking, itching of scalp hot oil treatments with things like mustard oil, diluted tea tree oil, and herb-infused oils like Vatika oil or Ramtirth oil are brilliant! Those things always killed all flakiness in 1 or 2 shots for me. But I think you need to use them regularly to keep flakes at bay.
