I have been trying to locate a fairly simple white silk scarf to cover my hair and head during my holiday this summer (I am going to China!) yet I am having issues finding one. I've been looking for one on and off for about a year now, and have only found one once that, although very pretty, was also very pricy :o I have managed to find a few short threads on this but they contained little useful information >_<

From what I read I am looking for habutoi(?) or charmeuse(?) silk, I have no idea what dimensions would be appropriate. I would like to be able to do the second style in this post: http://igorsbelltower.blogspot.nl/2011/01/summer-hair.html which I adore, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it even with the instructions (if anyone feels like clearing it up, it would be much appreciated!)

I have little hope of finding one in a store IRL but any directions or recommendations to websites (that ship to Europe) would be much appreciated (bonus points if they also have silk pillowcases). Or should I attempt to find one when I am already there?

Thanks in advance!

If you mean plain silk, you can get white ones in art shops and then dye it.

oh! But you'll be in China! I agree that you could find a white one and dye it fairly simply, though I have no idea what densions to use, but if I were going to china I'd save up and buy something lovely there.

this probably wont help much but the only way i can afford silk is to hunt through thrift shops and grage/estate sales. i know they arent as popular there as they are here in the states but if your flexable on colors/patterns you can find some beauties. the most common solids ive seen though are white and blue. most people dont know what a valuble fabric they are donating.

They do international shipping, as well.

Thai silk

They sell to artists, the prices are reasonable, and if you only want white, that should work well. They have both cloth and pre made scarves.

Dharma Trading is great for white silk anything. If you're just looking for silk scarves and more open about color, I've found all mine at resale shops. Look for hand-finished edges.

For a basis for comparison, a standard bandana is about 22x22 inches (though invariably and irritatingly never quite square). I find those to be a bit on the small side, but you should test the style out with a bandana. From there you can guesstimate a bit more accurately how much bigger you'd like your scarf to be.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I have tried second hand shops before but we don't have that many here and mostly they just sell regular clothes, not the cool kind of thrifty stuff unfortunately. I haven't tried art shops yet, we have one in the city I can try. I am hoping I can find some in China but I'd like to get one before I go there just to be prepared.

I have seen dharma trading before but honestly their website confuses me, I have no idea which one I'd actually need and which sizes would be reasonable, they don't seem to have standard dimensions? As for comparing it to bandanas, I am quite useless with them :o

Thank you for the links, I'll go check them out now!

How about going to a haberdashery/ fabric shop, buying a length of silk and hemming it yourself?

How about getting one in China. I'm sure you can find it much cheaper over there. The quality might not be that great, but for the price here, you might be able to get multiple there.
