View Full Version : I like frizzy and flyaway hair

Okay this might sound strange but I was looking for a topic for people who actually like frizzy, wild hair and flyaways. Obviously I couldn't find one. (If such a topic exists, please delete this one)
I don't know if this deserves a topic but I really want to know if I'm the only one who does?

I understand women that find it very hard to cope with their hair, but yet I don't think frizziness is ugly beforehand!
I'm going to give some examples of some kind of frizziness I like:

Mini series Ivanhoe (BBC) (hair ends):

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/6061/ivanhoe.png

And then we have Lady Guinevere (http://www.google.nl/imgres?um=1&hl=nl&sa=N&biw=1366&bih=631&tbm=isch&tbnid=betD-VmDCgx8nM:&imgrefurl=http://www.erasofelegance.com/entertainment/movies/knight/knight.html&docid=y7PqZSYME1IViM&imgurl=http://www.erasofelegance.com/entertainment/movies/knight/fk1a.jpg&w=400&h=474&ei=CULPT4roJY6R0QXrjsnJCw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=441&vpy=169&dur=617&hovh=154&hovw=126&tx=138&ty=117&sig=103165059621454120499&page=1&tbnh=122&tbnw=98&start=0&ndsp=23&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0,i:76) from First Knight, which you probably know already. She's my hair inspiration!

I'm going to give my reasons for liking wildish hair:

- My hair behaves better when it's frizzy. I get more waves, and it suits me better. I sometimes use some sea salt spray to get this frizzy, matte effect and I get compliments all the time. :)
- The frizziness and flyaways give me more volume on top of my head which I like.
- I hate over polished looks. Straightened hair, perfect curls... just.. NO please?! Not only on me but also on other people.. We are not dolls! ( this is my opinion, don't feel offended!)
I think hair must look effortless and if that includes some frizziness, I'm fine with it! Wind or rain running through my hair gives me a sort of adventurous feeling and I like that!
- To be honest, (again don't feel offended pls) if someone dresses like a bag of potatoes and has frizzy hair, it doesn't look very good. But I think it can look fashionable on someone with good sense of style!

I guess people who don't like frizziness would have exactly the opposite reasons, like: their hair looks weird with flyaways, they like polished looks and think that frizziness looks shabby... But it can look good anyway.

So my point is that I want to say that frizziness actually can look good and I'm wondering if there are other people out there who share my opinion...

Yes, I've always thought that frizzy, wild, flyaway hair looks lovely, and I sometimes don't get why people complain so much (and positively feel bad!) about their hair getting a bit frizzy...maybe it's because my hair - the sleek straight type - hardly ever gets frizzy and full :)!

But that's of course a matter of personal opinion. I also like all-defined curls, and polished-looking hair...which is, after all, how my hair behaves, naturally, so I'd better like it ;).

Thanks for your reply!

I think we have to love what we have naturally. My hair tends to be frizzy and I like it. Your hair looks polished naturally and it looks a-ma-zing from the pictures I've seen in your album!
But it's what you say.. I feel bad for people that don't like their natural frizziness because it can be pretty :)

Sometimes I wish I had the kind of textured, wavy hair that gets frizzy, because it can look so effortless and beachy and pretty when they let it frizz. It also gives great volume to updos and looks awesome with a headband. Like Riona, however, my hair tends more towards the sleek side, and I work with what I have.

There's a huge difference I think between how Julia Ormonds soft waves with wispy flyaways looks and someone with just plain frizz.

As a 1b/1a frizz doesn't happen to me unless I've bleached the beejezus out of my hair and pretty much destroyed it, so the dolls hair/sheet of glass look is all I can have. (And I like it)

But my mother has coarse hair that would probably be classed as a 2c/3a but it is more kink and frizz than true curls... but when it was waist or longer it was amazing... like a huge lions mane of hennaed heaven.

I also really like flyaways and frizz on surf type girls with ombre hair like this: http://afflictor.com/?s=SURFER+HAIR

Haha, I don't see any frizz in that picture! I'm happy when my hair does that - what I don't like is something more akin to this -

Admittedly, my first thought on looking at the OP's photos was 'That's my flyaways and frizz on a good day...' And all it takes to ruin that good day is the slightest breeze.

The bad days I look like a lion pulled through a hedge backwards. :p

I agree.
I always loved the playful frizzyness of other people but when I'd see it on myself I really didn't like it. I didn't really understand why that was but yeah.

I do like frizz in the pictures you showed. I do not like my curls-brushed-out-frizz. Which is what I had pretty much all my life because I didn't have the knowledge to take care of my curls.
But that kind of frizz I usually call POOF! ^^

I absolutely adore these little frissy hairs that some people get around their temples (baby-hair) :D It looks so cute! Especially when the hairs are a bit curly.

Another thing that I've started to like is dirty-looking/stringy hair . Like this: http://www.flata.net/gamlin/bilder/badarna/badarna%2017.jpg

OTOH, love the Ivanhoe hair and can't see much frizz there either :)

My only problem with frizzies and flyaways (I have both) is it is often mistaken for unkempt and damaged. Don't get me wrong, I do have some heat and dye damage, but it is very minimal and most of it has begun feeling a TON better since I started air-drying and gave up heat styling tools about 2 months ago. My hair went from very tangly and rough to much less tangly and soft. What hurts my feelings is people who will see my hair (especially in the daylight) and say something along the lines of "oh, you should really take better care of your hair" or "you look like you could use a good smoothing cream." :eyeroll

Whereas my sister, who has near waist length hair, dyes and heat style and hair sprays and fries the holy hell out of her hair.... but because it is just a naturally smoother texture than mine (not nearly as wavy) she gets a ton of compliments on it all the time.

It's very frustrating. I do love my hair and it's texture, but sometimes I wish people were a little more open minded about the frizz and flyaways. For some, that is just a part of how their hair is.

I think I know what OP is getting at. That's the kind of frizz my hair gets when I don't brush after a shower and let my natural curl do its thing. But that's just what my hair is like... On a FRIZZY day my hair expands into an enormous triangular lion's mane larger than my shoulders, and that looks just plain crazy!

However, I have found a cute, frizz-friendly hair-do for myself to keep for the time being!

No, not a good look, I don't think. :D

There's a difference between a few stubborn strands and some wisps here and there and a massive ball of *undefined* waves or curls. I think you have to draw the line at undefined.

Lovely!! I like it :)

And on the Ivanhoe picture you can clearly see some flyaway things at their hair ends.. Not on top of their head though..

lapushka You're absolutely right, there's a difference between some frizziness and an electrocution hairdo. I'm not against taming hair at all, but sometimes I feel sorry for women that freak out when their hair is a tiny bit frizzy because it can look very fine!

shutterpillar that's awful, they don't know what they are talking about. I like your hair from your album pictures and I think it looks great :D

Beautiful hair, kitschy! Love the ringlets. I actually think wispy bits work better with curls than looser waves. The thing that drives me nuts about my frizz are the short baby hairs that don't want to lie down and play nice with the longer hairs; my longer hairs aren't curly enough for the baby hairs to blend in, so I get a "halo" around my hairline. It doesn't really bug me all that much, but I'd to be able to make my updos look more polished.

my hair is naturally quite frizzy, even when heavily oiled it still manages to have frizz! I don't mind a bit of it, Kitschy yours is lovely :) The thing i don't like about my frizz is when it is uneven, I'll get smooth, defined, silky curls underneath for example and then a layer of less curly, frizzy hair as a layer on top and thats what drives me mad!

I have naturally flat thin fine hair and after a shower I will have frizz at my temples and a little bit all over. It's the only time I have poof or volume or fluffy-softness, and I love it.

When sunlight hits frizz it reminds me of sunlight on Miss Minnie Cat's fur - all soft and golden halo-like.

That said, the Lion-through-the-hedge-backwards bit is overkill! ;) I'd be trying to tame that down myself. But it is possible to leave some texture, some softness, some 3-D, don't you think?

Frankly, I'm getting tired of seeing flat-ironed hair everywhere, it's not all that pretty generally.

Gosh, yes! I love seeing naturally straight, silky hair, but I'm so tired of seeing all these heads of APL/BSL flat-ironed hair with the wispy fried ends that just look so abused. That's why I've never been a flat-ironer, even when the frizz gets on my nerves. Abused hair makes me sad!

I've always had frizzy hair !
Nothing has ever worked to tame my frizz.
Even when I use to straighten my hair, it would still have stubborn frizzy bits!
I gave up trying and realized I take after my mum who has frizzy/curly hair too! :)

When I was little I had very silky, completely non frizzy hair. I had a friend with frizzy hair. When she had it pulled back, there were always little frizzy bits that stuck up.

I PRAYED for hair like hers... PRAYED lol.

Now my hair frizzes...

and I hate it!!!

This. Very much this.

I actually love how huge my hair can get, and I'd actually intentionally brush it occasionally for the enormousity effect...but I hate how people comment constantly when I do. That I need to "fix" it, or I must be having a bad hair day, or some just plain giggle.

I can't even go without leave-in without someone saying something, much less lots of intentional volume.

I never understand when straighties complain of fly-a-ways because it all seems so tame to me...but then again I figure it's the same problem on a different part of the spectrum.

I can never anticipate my frizzy curly levels day to day, one day I'll have super crazy cool curls and the next I'll have straight but fluffy hair (like my avatar pic). If I could get my crazy curls I'd be happy with the frizz because then it's kind of fun, the white girl straight poof is not my favorite look and without heat styling or long enough hair to pull it all up I get creative with scarves and bobby pins.

I think it just looks healthy, nice and like I put time into my appearance :D but everyone has their own opinion, so I respect yours ;) also, like the people in the picture you showed a lot of people have "nice frizzy hair :happydance::happydance:

Oh man...I have really TRIED to like my frizzy hair, but it's just not going to happen. Even if I don't LIKE it though, I accept it :) The only thing I like about it (for me) is that it makes my hair appear less thin so it's not all bad.

DH calls me his "sheepy" so he kinda likes it I think :D

We always want what we don't have though. I would kill for shiny, swingy, straight silky hair that hangs nicely and doesn't float around my head. Never gonna happen :(

Just found this thread. I have always enjoyed my frizzy hair. My hair can get very puffy and floaty. When it is really humid, I get hundreds of tiny frizzyy curls on top of my head. I don't follow trends so it has never bothered me. Sometimes I wish I had heavy glossy hair like others but most of the time I like my witchy flyaway hair.

Wow! Haha I always thought I was the only one! :cheese:
As someone with fairly thin hair, I always thought that the frizz added some kind of thickness to it (is that weird?).
I like the frizziness/fluff, but my friends would notice and tell me I should put it up because it was so fluffy! >.<
I definitely like my lively, frizzy hair more than when it is stick straight and flat, though.. :)

I used to hate frizz (on my own head that is) but I'm starting to really love and embrace it. A good job really as I have plenty! I can definitely relate to the lion look btw, my hair is just below shoulder, blonde and often resembles a bedraggled lion if I haven't tried to tame it.

Extreme frizz looks very bad. Anybody with wavy or curly hair is going to get at least slight frizz. I think in this case it certainly helps give hair its volume and fullness. I intentionally try to keep my waves by conditioning all my hair below the top of the ears. This kind of slight frizz to me looks good.

I like the poofy halo, it shows you aren't wearing a wig ;)

The only problem I have is as a straightie they stick straight out, which at best makes me look a bit mental, and at worst makes me look like I've had a tragic accident with a Van Der Graaf generator.

I'm talking about a reasonable amount of frizziness and flyaways, not exploded hair that really needs to be tamed.

And here lies the problem. What you're saying here is that you don't actually like frizzy hair for the same reason that people who do have frizzy hair don't like it either. It looks unpolished, messy, unkempt, etc.

But then you go on to say "I hate over polished looks." But, you dislike hair that looks exploded. That doesn't make any sense in this context.

I've got the kind of hair that frizzes at the first hint of humidity. Trust me, there is nothing attractive about that.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/bene25/hair/th_SDC10662.jpg (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/bene25/hair/SDC10662.jpg)

And then you went so far as to throw in hair that "needs to be tamed" And that's a whole other distasteful issue that I'm too tired to go into. :nono:

And here lies the problem. What you're saying here is that you don't actually like frizzy hair for the same reason that people who do have frizzy hair don't like it either. It looks unpolished, messy, unkempt, etc.

But then you go on to say "I hate over polished looks." But, you dislike hair that looks exploded. That doesn't make any sense in this context.

I've got the kind of hair that frizzes at the first hint of humidity. Trust me, there is nothing attractive about that.

And then you went so far as to throw in hair that "needs to be tamed" And that's a whole other distasteful issue that I'm too tired to go into. :nono:

First I wanted to say sorry if I offended you in some way.

Frizzy flyaway hair and 'exploded' hair are not the same and over polished and 'explosion' hair are two opposites. So I don't see why hating over polished (or should I say too polished? Don't know how to say it) hair would mean that there's no styling at all...
I wanted to be reasonable in what I was saying without offending anyone, that's why I'm talking about hair in between those too. Guess I wasn't careful enough, sorry.
Some women complain about a little bit of frizziness. I know dozens of them in my environment. I don't understand that. :p
There are women with an 'electrocution' hairdo that want to get rid of ALL frizz... I can understand that from their point of view, but it can look good too. In fact I know some women IRL with different types of hair that pull off that hairstyle.

But I'll change my sentence there, I wasn't consequent in what I was saying. :)
I was saying it that way to show that I do understand women who have to cope with extremely frizzy hair. I didn't mean to say it's ugly beforehand.

And I believe you when you say that your frizziness isn't attractive, but I can't tell from that picture so I'll trust you on that one :)
However... I know a lot of women that claim the same thing (that it looks ugly) and that I think it looks actually good!
But again, it could be only me because I often find beautiful what others think is ugly and the other way... That's why I started the topic to see if I was the only one.

(It doesn't help me that English is definitely not my first language either, I find it very hard to write correct sentences and trying to find the right words.)
