Just for fun, what was your "hair inspiration" as a child? Did you always want long hair?

My first inspirations were princesses and Barbies and the like, especially "Lady Lovely Locks", who had long blonde hair and little squirrely creatures with long tails that lived in her hair (sounds unhygienic to me now). Then as I got older I had this fantasy of being a hippie and joining a commune.

Hope you guys enjoy the memories! Seems all my hair idols had LONG hair!! LOL
I STILL love all these hair-looks - looks like a natural ombre on the blondies and the chestnut color on Tiffany Amber Theissen (Saved by the Bell) is one that I would love to sport in the colder months of the year!
By the way can anyone help me find a link that teaches me all the hair-talk "codes"? I have no idea what half the stuff on here stands for!! Thanks ladies! Love the site!!

PIXIETAILS! I remember wearing these little clip-in Pixietail barettes they sold in different colours. Like clip-in highlights for the preschool set (^(oo)^)v

When i was about 4 years old to 8 I had knee length hair and that was the time I lived in Japan, so I would ask my mom to give me Geisha hair :D

I think my hair inspirations as a kid were mostly from books--particularly fantasy novels. I think that Sherwood Smith's novels were especially formative in this sense.

EDIT: Haha. I just looked back at this. Not entirely sure why I felt the need to use the word "formative." I guess that's what you get when you take a break from writing your art history final paper to go on LHC.

I remember, I wanted to have black hair like Snow White when I was 5 or something. :p When I was 7 I wanted to be blonde like Pamela Anderson. I guess the color was more important to me then length. ;)

I don't actually know where I got it but I always wanted long black hair. I had a black skirt and I used to put that in my head and pretend it was my hair. :) (Sounds like I was really skinny child with a big head. Maybe I was. :p)

LOL My sister and I used to put our long window curtains over our shoulders and pretend it was our long hair! Or sometimes, like you said you used to do, we'd put skirts over our heads and pretend it was long hair :D

Vampyria, I was all about the colors, too :)
First it was Anne of green gables. I was so bummed I wasn't a redhead. Then Darryl Hannah on splash. I really wanted to be a blonde. And then princess jasmines swishy black ponytail. Considering I still dye my hair, I guess I never resigned myself to brown.

Mine was my neighbor – friend. She was 3 years older than me and we played together all the time. She wore her hair in a thick braid and it reached until her mid-thighs. My mother used to braid a strap of fake pearls in my hair in order my braid reach her length (something like parandi). I was maybe 6-7 years old then.

I waned Wednesday Addams long, black, braided pigtails when I was a child. I so wanted to dye my hair black and grow it long so I could look like her.

I also loved the hair of Duchess Ravenwaves from Lady Lovely Locks.

I also loved the hair of Bianca the villain in Beverly Hills Teens.

I always loved Sasha's hair in Kindred the Embraced, though I watched this series when I was about 14 so I guess I was not a child then.

I always had a thing for Arcana's white hair from Shagma.

My hair inspiration was from older photos of my Mum, she had tailbone auburn curly/wavy hair when she was in her 20's and I always wanted long hair.

Mum never did let me as she said it gave you headaches from the weight of it. so she woudl get a neighbour to crop mine really short.
It just touched my shoulders at one point (I loved it!!!) when I was about 8 as my neighbour had been poorly so couldn't cut my hair. As soon as she was well enough it was all chopped off again.:(

Vasilissa the Beautiful, from my "Enchanted russian stories". The book had amazing ilustrations and Vasilissa appered in several stories. She always had an amzing long hair and fantastic tsarevna crown on her head, framing the hair.

I still think of her, and still read those storeis once in a while.

I used to always ask my mom to style my hair "like jasmin's" from the little mermaid! I had long very voluminous curly hair as a child (not much has changed I suppose haha, less volume though), so I guess i was realistic in my hair goals haha

My Aunt used to read mme this story about a princess how had the longest hair. I LOVED the story and that inspired me to grow out my hair very long. I've been growing out my hair ever since I was young, with sometimes chopping it to sholder length to see how it would look. Once you go long, you can't go back ;-P

Another vote for Anne of Green Gables, and also the Ingalls family from the Little House books. Then The Lord of the Rings in which I always remember lines about "bright hair". Then in my late teens and early twenties (which at 44 seems "little" to me ;)) I discovered the Wraeththu books by Storm Constantine which are full of long haired lovelies, Little Big by John Crowley with Violet's "never cut hair", and Zmelanie in Angela Carter's Magic Toyshop. :)

Princess Jasmine, Empress Elisabeth, Heidi (the movie from 1993) and Rapunzel were my inspiration.

My parents had this huge collected Shakespeare set with engraved illustrations. There was one of drowned Ophelia with all these plants tangled in her long hair. For some reason this really stuck with me. I also remember loving Daryl Hannah's hair from Splash and Ariel's from the Little Mermaid.

I was not allowed to have long hair (and yes I am still bitter) so I devised some imaginary methods of having it! I would braid ribbons into my hair which at the time was a pageboy with straight across bangs and pretend the ribbons were my hair. You can imagine how this looked as well as the tangles when the ribbons came out. I also used to stand in the shower and pretend that it was a magic shower that would cause my hair to grow just from the water running over it. Always disappointing to get out and see my short stupid hair! Now I am grown and get to grow my hair as long as I want (or more accurately as long as it wants to grow)! Yay!:D

I had really short hair as a toddler, then I turned six and went to first grade. Most of the girls in my class had long hair, and so I felt kind of odd not having long hair. That's the sole reason I started to want to grow it. 4/5 years later I had classic length. Yeah, when I tackle something, I do it well. :p

BWAAHAHAHAHA! I do this all the time! It helps to hit preview post first, then edit out the academic-speak.

My longhair inspiration was an old, old woman who was the secretary at my grade school, she was so beautiful and her braid wound around and around her head so many times, I always wanted to see how long it was.

It was a picture in an old fairy tale book. I remember it perfectly.
It was a picture of the eldest sister from the 12 dancing princesses, and it was focusing on when they were getting onto the boats to get the castle. The hair was about classic length and a golden brown colour not too different from my own at the time. It was dressed in a beautiful medieval style, and was very thick. If I could find the book, I'll post a picture of it :]

Hmm, hard to say if I recall specific idols. I liked the hair on the Disney princesses (and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, because I really was freakishly obsessed with that movie when I was little), but I don't recall ever thinking "I want hair just like that!" I think more so I liked the images I saw or imagined of people that lived in ancient or medieval times (fictional or real), or the imagery of witches, vampires and other creatures with long flowing or crazy hair (yeah, I was a bit of a goth/geek kid when I was little).

Someone or something must have had an impact (now that I think on it, though, my money's on the monsters :p), though, because I've only been tempted to cut my hair short once, and I didn't even go through with it. In my early teens, I think the goth/vampire look still inspired me to have long hair (though I don't remember if my hair ever even was THAT long). In my late teens and into now, it's still the fantasy/spooky element, just add a lot more metal culture influence, and idealized images of Vikings and Celts. :p

my 1st grade teacher

she had tailbone shiny jet black hair and I coveted black hair forever and a day

I finally took the plunge and dyed my mid-brown hair black when my own hair was waist-length and I HATED it on me...ended up cutting to chin length then eventually going red

my hair hasn't been past BSL since and that was about 10 years ago...I'm working on heading back to at least waist-length now

Yeah I have to join in on the chorus and say "Disney princesses"---Aurora and Ariel in particular. My hair was longish when I was little but I remember saying as a little girl that I wanted long blonde hair. I'm happy with my black hair these days but I cannot the deny the glistening awesomeness that is blonde hair (I am also very much into blonde dudes like my boyfriend).

And as far as real-life inspirations, my mama!! Her hair was waist length and very beautiful.

and when i was little i always wanted to be a mermaid, so i love arial and "splash"

but my main inspiration was sailor moon, there was one episode where usagi took her hair down, and mina sat behind her and brushed it. her hair fell down her head like a gold waterfall and puddled on the floor..i loved it :P

also there was a singer in the 60's i think? her name was crystal gayle, she has the most amazing floor length hair that i loved.

I'm going to date myself as being a bit older than everyone in this thread by saying Crystal Gayle! She was singer and I remember seeing her on one of the variety shows that were popular in the 70's, most likely Sonny & Cher, who was also a hair idol back in the day. Anyway Crystal had probably thigh length shiny straight brown hair and I wanted it. I never was allowed to have long hair when I was young so I've spent most of my adulthood trying to have the longest hair I could manage.

Kirstie Alley, when she was young, before the bleach and attempts to be more fashionable with her hair.

I used to be SO JEALOUS when we watched Cheers because her hair was so full, thick, and shiny.

I was all about Buttercup in The Princes Bride, I was never into being blond but that crazy long hair, oh and Sarah in Labyrinth, my mother always cut my hair in what my cousins called the prince valiant style, a jaw length bob with very straight bangs, when I turned eight I rebelled and refused to let them cut my bangs any more so my parents called me a shaggy dog, obviously I didn't let the ridicule get to me since I still can't style bangs :P
