I love number four! Sorry, but the seashell/starfish ones seem a bit tacky to me (I love seashell designs usually, but these ones don't sit well with me). Number four is unassuming yet strikingly elegant. If that means anything.

Well the reason I picked the two nautical ones is because I like the idea of mermaid hair. The antlers I like because as Darkcurls said, it's elegant.

I think the first 2 are not the greatest quality. I would avoid the antlers, simply because of the shop owner's shady practices (incidents of stealing an LHC member's photos and photoshopping her forks into the pics in order to make sales). So, I would have to go for the ornate.

Do bear in mind MariyaArts track record is a little iffy; she stole an LHCer's action shot photo and photoshopped her stick into it, then using the image to sell the stick.

Personally for your first stick(s) I'd go for something cheap and versatile, so my vote's on Quecraft. :) They do have less ornate designs; ones like this one (http://www.etsy.com/listing/96893155/handmade-ebony-shell-silver-hair-stick), and this one (http://www.etsy.com/listing/96893370/handmade-ebony-mother-of-pearl-silver) are quite understated.

Oooooh I like those. They're simple, no fancy beads, no translucent acrylic etc. I may eventually go for the second one if OP doesn't take it/them :P

The bamboo-with-sea-creatures sticks don't look very robust to me--you could probably make something like this yourself with some glue and a pair of chopsticks... :)

Speaking of making your own, or buying things cheap--Fire Mountain Gems (http://www.firemountaingems.com/search/?Keywords=hair+stick) and Many Horses (http://www.manyhorses.com/store_hairsticks.htm) sell chopsticks made of wood, horn, and other materials in bulk. And my favorite sticks are Ketylo (http://www.ketylo.com/servlet/StoreFront).

But a word of warning with stuff from quecraft: (your ornate selection is from quecraft), I am not saying that Quecraft is totally bad, I have a horn comb from that I totally love. Bought I a fork and stick from them AND BOTH BROKE OFF IN MY HAIR, and I do not have terribly thick or stubborn hair. Some of the designs are just very thin towards the ends, like miniscule.

Also the shipping took 3 weeks.

i did think about making them myself out of knitting needles [since I knit a lot i thought it might be kind of fitting] but then... i don't know, i was worried that if I make it myself, it might not be as smooth and sealed as I want it to be.

Try it! There is a handmade hair stick thread somewhere around here (I'm not subscribed to it) that might have some useful tips for sanding and finishing sticks. I made a couple out of a simple dowel, and they came out pretty smooth.

Oh, and I see a weird typo in my first comment--I meant that Fire Mountain and Many Horses sell *hair* sticks, not chopsticks :)

Some of those seemed kind of expensive for what you get. I say if you are willing to spend the money, go to Grahtoe studio on etsy and get something that you know from the reviews that the quality will be great. I like the link earlier to the antler hair sticks, but they are really forks. I just got inspired and bought their antler forks topped with tulipwood. There is a nice set still there with bloodwood, a beautiful deep red wood topping the antler.

I got my very first one from Lilla Rose (https://secure.lillarose.biz/MemberToolsDotNet/(S(1ytfd0fhcitdnmuk0liurpuf))/ShoppingCartNew/MainCart.aspx?PartyID=-1&PartyGuestID=0) and they've been very good sticks for me (actually, it's in my siggy.:D) Not expensive and certainly not works of art like many on etsy, but often my go-to sticks.

But there are a lot of good, inexpensive sellers on etsy too. Some have already been linked.

Of the choices, I would pick the Antler and the Ornate. The shipping from quecraft takes about two weeks and I was told that you have to pick them up from a special building. They also have a chance of breaking.

I like the antler/horn sticks - but I think we LHC'ers have to stick together and boycott unfair practice against our members.

My first sticks were two pacific merchantile acrylics (and he sent me a free wooden stick too), I think they were a very good start, I'm so picky with natural products I couldn't decide on a wood/horn stick to start with.

Also some personal experience with Quecraft is that my order took ages to arrive, and when it did the item was not the same as the one listed. It was in the same style (a horn stick with dragonfly on the end) but the carvings into it were different and it had really hideous bright red eyes (the one on the listing was very natural looking with no colourings, just plain horn). I couldn't remove the red eyes so had to resort to colouring them in with black sharpie to makle them less noticable.

I second this. Ketylos were my first sticks, and they are still my most often used sticks-- they are so easy to use, hold like a rock, and because they are simple they are more versatile :)
