Hairstick buns for midback-length hair?

The only bun I've tried, which holds my hair well, is a cinnabun, and I'm getting kind of tired of it, not to mention the fact that I'm afraid all this twisting might damage my hair.

Does anyone have suggestions for buns for midback-length hair, preferably ones held with sticks (either one or two)?

You could try the LWB (lazy wrap bun). I'm at midback and it holds with a stick, though it works better with a fork or flexi, especially with straight hair.

Actually I do have one... it's not really a bun but that's what I do with my hair practically every day at this awkward length. I do a simple Dutch braid and I fold it back, then pin it up with at least two sticks (like X)

The rose bun always worked well for me. It was my staple...lol.

Actually, I've tried it (learning from Habioku's video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTt771qkO24 ), but for some reason I can't do the part where you stick the hairstick (the hair just doesn't let it flip the other way). :)

I *love* the lazy wrap bun, also the pencil bun, and the nautilus bun. A knot bun is great too.

The rose bun! That is a very pretty style, and is very secure as well. and once you have learned it, rope braiding is both quick and easy!

The pencil bun worked well for me, but the rose bun and the seashell bun not so much (I have hairs badly sticking out, and I don't even have layers!).

For me, the woven (?) looks awful on me (unfortunate because I really like it). I just have to practice I guess... I like that people inserted links or pics. The ones without links or pics I haven't tried yet (way too lazy to Google right now). I'm so glad you started this thread! :flowers:

Lazy wrap is great. Depending on your thickness (I was able to manage it at that length, but I'm on the low end of ii thickness), you might be able to do a celtic knot bun.

I love doing a french braided bun with sticks. I'm just past APL and this is elegant, easy and makes it look like I have a lot more hair than I do. Can't find the tutorial (which I originally saw linked from LHC) right now, but you basically just start with a regular french braid. Insert a stick vertically (I do a slight diagonal to make it look nicer) through the part of the braid against your scalp, then wind the rest around it and secure with a second stick. Photo below is with just one stick and a bobby pin holding the end. I started the french braid a little too low, but you get the idea

I'm a middle ii, but waist is like 32" on me too, so...

A plain knot bun works at BSL, barely. Depending on how you measure, BSL is 25-27" on me. If I'm dead on BSL, I can't do a Celtic Knot, and I need more length. But around 29", I can do nice solid Celtic Knots *and* they're one of my favorite friendly to bike helmet buns. It's a really nice flattening sort of bun. U pins work, spin pins work, sticks work, forks work. I find knot buns to be really flexible and really well suited to my accursed slippery hair.

I've worked out how to get Heidi braids to work with a bike helmet, and they are a pretty length agnostic style. I haven't yet found a length where my hair is "too long" for 'em. I find the easiest way to make my braids look tiny and thin is to pin them back on my head. The nearer the braids are to my hairline, the better it looks. An alternative look with the exact same setup and minimum length reqs is Casey's Romantic Braided Updo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HKWx47RD20). The woman in the video uses hairspray, but it works fine without. These are both more hairpin friendly than stick friendly, but the tradeoff is twin braids are easy to do when you're sopping wet from the shower, so a lot of hair sticks wouldn't be happy anyway. Tiny claw clips can also work for both these styles if hair pins make you crazy.

Lace crown braid works with a bike helmet and works on BSL hair for me. It is also pretty length agnostic, and once it works, it'll continue to work for quite a long time. However, I find it's more fiddly than Heidi braids. OTOH, it doesn't necessarily take *anything* to make it hold.

My hair JUST hit APL, in August it will be two years growing from bald. Everyone tells me my hair grows quickly, it is way too slow for me! I want my waist length hair back.

I thought my hair was ii thickness, but maybe it is more ii/iii, because I am between bra strap and waist and am having a difficult time with most of these. I can just now barely do a nautilus bun that is horrendously tight, but if I loosen it any, it unravels when my ends fall out. Just to see if it was possible, I sectioned out a third of my hair, and some of the buns are possible. It is not my length, it is my thickness. I am just not going to thin out my hair, or cut bangs so I can do different buns. Maybe by the end of the year.

Oh thanks for this! I had a friend in high school who would always use a pencil to out her hair into a bun and I have been trying to remember how she did it because I loved the style. This is exactly how she did it!

Yet another vote for the pencil bun here. I've been using it since APL and it still works well at waist+ although I think it may have mutated very slowly into something slightly different now. It's the only bun I ever do! works well with forks & Ficcares as well as pencils/sticks.

Lol, my pencil bun has also morphed somewhat, but still works beautifully at hip. If you end up with extra hair, just wrap it around the base.

It sounds like you're probably more a iii. I'm at hip and still can't do a decent figure 8; I need another couple of inches to do it properly. Pencil bun and lazy wrap should work for you.

I've always had trouble getting my hair to stay put using sticks to hold my hair. Thanks for the idea to look on youtube for tips!
