Virupaksha temple is the best known of the temples in Pattadakal, India. It was built by Queen Lokamahadevi in 745 AD to commemorate her husband King Vikramaditya II’s victory over the Pallavas of Kanchi. It has some of these interesting sculptures in there:

Hair Archeologist Janet Stephens makes updo tutorials based on hairstyles presented to her by statuary. Really interesting stuff. These are amazing heads of hair. Lucky them.

I like the hair styles from back then. They had amazing hair to do those styles with.

Fascinating. What do you think that is on the man's head in the second picture? It looks like his hair was wrapped around a head-piece of some kind. The women have nice, fat buns. Bet they had quite substantial lengths of hair.

The female style looks a bit like a sideways log roll.

Othala that hairstyle seems impossible! It must be a headpiece.
