Ok, now I know that this is somewhere in the vast reams of knowledge contained within LHC, but can I find it? Even with the trusty search function? NOPE!

So apologies in advance if I've totally missed the obvious way to find the answer to my question!

My hair is now long enough that just finger combing isn't cutting it. I have to invest in a comb or brush of some sorts soon! Right now I'm leaning towards a wooden wide-toothed detangling comb, but I have no idea the best or cheapest place to get one (ebay throws up loads, but who knows if they're what I need?)

So please, recommend me good hair-friendly brushes or combs to help me tame my tresses. Tangle teezers are not for me, neither are "hairy" brushes like bbb I don't think. I have thick, wurly red hair, need to keep the frizz and damage to a minimum, and just need to un-knot it all!

So please, links or recommendations, fire away! TIA! :cheese:

Whatever your preference, just be sure to inspect the comb in person..to make sure the seams are not rough.

Wooden combs can be sanded and so can plastic ones.

I use a generic Sally's shower comb.

They are a bit expensive, but last forever and have no rough edges. Hand made Mason Pearson combs are all I use. I have three different ones and love all three. They are known for their brushes, but I've never tried one. I don't brush my hair. I finger comb it and use the detailers after I wash my hair, and the styling one I use in my bangs after I spray dry shampoo in them. I would never use or try another comb. They are amazing!

I have these....

After months of waffling between a horn or wood comb, I just got this one http://www.amazon.com/Swissco-Tortoise-Purse-Perm-Comb/dp/B000TC34VG/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1338153320&sr=8-6 It's some kind of plastic. :p It's solidly made, smooth and without seams, and it doesn't seem to be creating static, either. I'm not sure if the tines would be far enough apart for you, though, they're about 1/8 inch apart at the top and wider at the ends because they taper a bit.

I highly recommend the Madora "ivory" comb (http://enchantress.com/ProductsGM.html). It's an extremely good quality seamless comb. It looks solid ivory in the pic, but in real life it looks more like horn or mother of pearl, with some translucent areas and some opaque. It feels really luxurious and detangles like a dream. The teeth are wider than most wide-toothed combs that I've seen.

It's available a number of places. The people at Enchantress are really nice and helpful. I would order stuff from them again.

Yes, the Madora Ivory comb is gorgeous. I don't own one but Heidi W has one and it looks like a great comb. The Madora line is only available at the GM salons, however. I've purchased GM combs several times and they lasted for years.

Since you have thick wurly hair (like mine), I highly recommend the Hairsense extra-wide toothed comb here: http://hairsense.com/bone_combs.php#seamless-combs-section.n The spacing is about 1/2", which allows it to go through thick hair without pulling out curl or tugging too much. Combs with narrower spaced teeth just don't work for me, and I've tried most of them, including MP, Creative 8L, Heavenly Harvest bone, etc. They're all great combs, but not spaced enough for me. :)

GrowingGlory, here's a link to the GM salon in NYC. Scroll way down for info re: brushes:

I've never purchased a brush from them. If you are looking for a good bbb, be sure and check it out in person. BBBs can vary greatly in bristle stiffness and bristle thickness/thinness.

Also, a good bbb need not cost a mint! I've seen pure bbbs at Target, Walmart and Walgreens.

I have a Madora comb and love it, I've used it for years. I also bought a Mason Pearson Rake and it was nice, but my favorite is the Madora. The edges of the tines on the Madora are slightly rounded where on the Mason Pearson rake they are more "straight cut". I'm sure both combs are damage free and both have their fans around here. I gave the Rake to my son and he uses it daily. The Madora has a place of honor on my dresser. :p

I also love the mason pearson rake comb. My hair breaks very easily but this comb doesn't cause any breakage or damage at all. None of the other combs I've ever tried were as good.

I second this, I went through a lot of combs trying to find the right one and this one is my absolute favorite.

Thanks guys, this has been a big help and given me a direction to look in - for now I have ordered this from etsy

https://www.etsy.com/transaction/83399033

because I do like to support handmade, and well, it looks preety! The Mason Pearsons i think will have teeth slightly too close together for comfy combing of my locks, and the hairsense ones looked to be the size I was after, but shipping doubled the price!

If this comb does the trick, I shall post back here with a review (in fact even if it doesn't do the trick, I'll review it anyway lol)

After buying my beloved jeterfork I'm a little in love with handcrafted wooden stuffs!

Glad you found a contender!

Saw this too late but I would've suggested the seamless/burr-free, rubber Magic Star Mini Rake from Hercules Sagemann.

http://www.hotcombs.net/magic-mini-star-rake/ (http://www.hotcombs.net/magic-mini-star-rake/)

It's...EVERYTHING. At least for my thick curls and coils, lol, here are the specs:

100% Vulcanized Natural Hard Rubber
6.5" x 2.5" perfect size for my hands (comes in large also)

Extra wide teeth
hand-cut and hand-polished all over
great EASY detangling

great at distributing product
gentle glides through thick curls and thin straight strands wet/dry
Flexible but firm
Mold and heat resiistant
Good to separate and smooth
I love the way it handles and doesn't stress my hands at all

My only con is when it gets wet you may smell a rubber scent but it doesn't last on hands nor transfer to hair.

Hope your pick is a winner!

Epstone on etsy has lovely combs made of verawood, I got one a few days ago and it's a great comb, nice weight, perfectly smooth teeth, and it smells really nice. It's hard to not comb my hair too much.

That's a very lovely comb. I hope it works out for ya.

I was going to recommend the Hair Sense wide-toothed combs. I have one myself and it works very nicely. But wood combs are also very nice. :D
