View Full Version : Advice for a man in the mega awkward phase?

Hello everybody. This is me from July 2011 up to today, I'm very excited to see the progress from 10 months. It's not easy getting stabbed in the eyes every day, and to make things worse I think I look fairly silly 90% of the time. I usually have a bandanna tied around my head (this gets me some looks and very rude comments), because the hair is not long enough to tie back or put behind my ears; it's really fluffy and static-ey it just doesn't want to stay out of my eyeballs, or stay put anywhere really...

Any ideas for products that wont get too nasty in the 95 degree heat where I live? Or an incognito headband of some sort? Would getting the back of my head trimmed up to be less mulletish be a good idea or should I just leave it? I feel like it looks uneven if the hair in the front and on top is the same length as in the sides and back... My goal right now is chin length, at least long enough to stash everything behind my ears (I reckon I'm in for another year or so). Do I just need to tough it out or is there a haircut that would benefit me at this point? Thanks for any advice folks.

I can't see your photos - alas! (/(oo)\)`

I can't see your photos but I will suggest to trim the back as it continue growing because eventually this will even out and looks less awkward than the mullet. You might want to put something in your hair to weigh it down a little but, perhaps some type of gel or even hair glue. The trick is not to use too much, and it should withstand the heat.

I can't see your photos either.

I've seen members here recommend a buff, but they are rather similar to a bandanna so that might not help.

Take solace in the fact that it WILL grow and it will be long enough to tuck behind your ears soon. Think of this awkward phase as a test of character. :D

Amen to that!

I'd suggest the gel or product to hold it in place until it grows past awkward phase.

I can't see your photos either. Bandanas are good or a baseball cap or cowboy hat, but that depends on what you do for work if you can wear those. For a product to get your hair out of your eyes you could try aloe vera gel. Be sure to get the 100% aloe gel and not the kind with alcohol. I've seen some guys wear a small pony almost on top of their heads too.

I also advise against mullet-cutting. My hair would be like, shoulder-length by now if I had just left it instead of cutting the back off over and over.

a simple elastic headband. no fuss. no product. Check out these links....

I second a plain headband, if looking like a soccer/football (depending on country) player isn't a problem. If you're somewhere with an unbearably hot climate, lots of hats should be options for you, even if bandannas get you strange looks. I know here I regularly see guys in baseball caps, cowboy hats, and even the occasional beret. If you're in the American South, cowboy hats have the additional advantage of being able to just put your hair in a very high ponytail as it grows and hide it under the hat (unless you're eating or at church, you shouldn't usually have to remove it).

Headbands are probably easier than hats though.

If you get bobby pins that match your hair color, you can pin the worst strands that go in your face. I'd put the pin almost behind the ear if possible, as it hides best there.

Gel, pomade, hair putty/sculpting putty, or hair wax/sculpting wax might help a lot - just slick it back out of your face. I prefer pomades, as they stay more touchable (though the touchable pomades tend to have a little less hold than the others), and also I find them a little easier to wash out. Hair putty and hair wax are the real heavy-duty end of things - among other things, that's one of the products people who wear high spiked 'dos use to secure their hair. Some people find that products that have a lot of alcohol in them dry out their hair, but I've never had trouble with styling products doing that.

It depends a lot on your personal style and also how professional you need to look. The headband suggestions are good though I think. It may also help if you scrunch in some product to help tame your hair and bring out your wave/curl pattern so it isn't so fluffy. I like to mix a little extra virgin olive oil with clear (non medicated) aloe vera gel and then scrunch that into my damp hair. Other more traditional products will help you also though.

The awkward phase is always the hardest. Any cutting will merely prolong that awkward phase, so the best thing is to tough it out, with the help of bands, bandanas or hats, according to your preference.
It won't take that many months before the worst is over. Good luck, from one who has been there!

Grr, she stole my idea! :D

I'd say test your hair with EVOO and Coconut oil first to see what yours likes. Then ditch the sticky hair gel for a mix of the oil(s) and aloe. Since my hair likes both, I do a 1 part EVOO, 1 part Coconut O, and 4-6 parts Aloe gel. It adds decent weight, smells nice, and keeps the frizz down. ;)

Just to put it in perspective, I'm in the desert part of Kuwait. Today was a wonderful 113F (45C) for the high and 90F (32C) for the low. Depending on which way the wind blows, its either a "hair dryer full blast in your face" feeling or a humid sauna feeling since we border the Persian Gulf.

Like you, I'm stuck in the awkward stage too. Its a pain, but we must endure! Long hair is right around the corner!

MULLETISH?

If it looks like you have a mullet you need to get it cut immediately.

I also like to think of the awkward phase as the "waiting phase". You've just got to stick it out and it won't be long before you get through it!

Once you're through it you'll look back on it and realise it wasn't that bad! Just avoid scissors!
